Freeman Posted September 16, 2011 Report Posted September 16, 2011 My Mazda 6 has developed a vibration, kicks in just after 70, and can be severe enough that the passenger seat starts shaking visibly. Not a lot of vibration can be felt through the steering wheel though. Dealer stated, we can't investigate it till you've had the wheels balanced, but it might be your brake disks have warped. at 26K I asked? Yes, because you've done a lot of miles in a short time. So, had both rears replaced, as they were worn on the inside edges. Vibration lessened - but still there, esp under braking. Front's balanced. Vibration still there, esp under braking. New disks and pads fitted. Vibration still there. Having new fronts fitted on Tuesday, but this is driving me up the wall. The 6 is 7 months old and has 29k on the clock, I drive about 800miles a week, including two 200+ trips. I'm pretty sure its not wheel/tyre related, as the wheels are true and unkerbed and I can't drive through the vibration. Any idea's? Otherwise its going to have to go back to another dealer to see if they can sort it.... Yes, and I know, the easiest solution is to keep it under 70, but that ain't gonna happen. Quote
Stumpi Posted September 16, 2011 Report Posted September 16, 2011 It'll be ur front discs if it gets worse while u brake. Had this recently on the mrs car. Quote
Chook Posted September 16, 2011 Report Posted September 16, 2011 I agree, maybe the front rotors are warped. If the front wheels have been removed and then done up with a rattle gun this (warped rotors) is very easily done on a modern car. Can you drive a few kms only using the hand brake for stopping and then get out and feel the rotors and see if they are warm. If so thats where I'd sart looking. Cheers Chook Quote
Adrien Posted September 16, 2011 Report Posted September 16, 2011 On my Xsara I had a similar problem (vibration in steering wheel after 65mph) and it was a front wheel hub that was very slightly warped: it was invisible to the naked eye and garage guys didn't notice it when they balanced the wheels. So I changed the front wheels with the spare wheel one at a time to identify the faulty hub, changed it and and problem solved Quote
Freeman Posted September 16, 2011 Author Report Posted September 16, 2011 Cheers peeps - as the disks have allegedly already been replaced, then a hub seems the next logical step. Can't do the changing for a spare tyre thing, as I ain't got one....... Quote
Capt Slog Posted September 17, 2011 Report Posted September 17, 2011 Any chance it might be a CV joint or anywhere around the an axle? If the cv joint is sticking it might be throwing out of true at speed. Quote
festa Posted September 17, 2011 Report Posted September 17, 2011 it could be a front wheel bearing they get worst under braking especially on front wheel drive cars Quote
Freeman Posted September 17, 2011 Author Report Posted September 17, 2011 Well another 320miles today, still shakin, heres hoping for a cure on Tuesday, otherwise demoted to a 1.2 while they investigate...... Quote
beth1974uk Posted September 18, 2011 Report Posted September 18, 2011 Same with xsara at 65mph but would smooth out after I took it to 75 I changed (well nice man at the garage did) the front passenger side wheel (it got a bit bald).. and the vibration has gone! Quote
festa Posted September 18, 2011 Report Posted September 18, 2011 Lol at Festa. well 1.2 is a bike engine !!!! Quote
i needs to fly Posted September 19, 2011 Report Posted September 19, 2011 dont forget tyres,i no it sounds simple but sometimes even new tyres have weakness in side walls,at speed they throw out of balance,as above to,wheel bearing,cv joints bottom ball joints, steering arm,all in that area could cause it,sticking caliper, only stabbing in dark,i would have thought newish car components wouldnt have failed so quick, got to be something simple? all best stuart Quote
thesilverfox Posted September 19, 2011 Report Posted September 19, 2011 As above - flat spots on tyres can be a nightmare - I use Falken FK-452 on my car, and as they wear down, they seem to cause horrific vibration near the end of their life for example. If the vibration is kicking in at a certain speed as you mention, does it go away again if you speed up a bit? Ball ache, for sure, but try getting wheels balanced by someone else too. When I had my first car (Fiesta) the Ford official dealership balanced my front wheels 3 times and couldn't get it right. Went to another Ford dealer who reckoned someone hadn't even bothered and it was sorted first time. Plus, the balancing weights can come off easily - especially the glued on type (glued inside the rim as opposed to hanging over the lip). Quote
RedSky Posted September 19, 2011 Report Posted September 19, 2011 I don't know anything about the Mazda 6. I had vibration problems in my car in the early 90s. It put big stresses on the cambelt and snapped. Valves went through the piston! Engine rebuild needed. Quote
Freeman Posted September 22, 2011 Author Report Posted September 22, 2011 Okaaay. New hooves all round - New pads and discs on the front. Still vibrating @ 70mph plus AND now I have whistling discs as the eejits at Hlafords Autocentre (other Auto Maintenance providers are available) haven't fitted them correctly... When the new fronts were fitted the wheels have been verified as being true and buckle free, so am leaning towards either a bearing or hub problem Quote
GeorgeFromDevon Posted September 22, 2011 Report Posted September 22, 2011 when my wheel bearing whent on my 206 i didnt notice a huge amount of vibration but i had a very loud rumbling noise. my van at the moment had warped front discs but i have done a few 1000 miles and they have settled down now. i think sumit like a CV or hub, get some one to go in the car with you and get them to move around the car and stick there head out the window/sunroof. were do you live? Freeman Posted September 27, 2011 Author Report Posted September 27, 2011 Don't I just know it.... Thanks to our 'wonderful' fleet management team, Halfords had it again yesterday to sort the whistling discs, and guess what, it's still whistling - "We've re-phased them, so they should be fine in a hundred mile or so...." Re-phased? Is this mechanics lingo for we had a look but couldn't be bothered? As for the Vibration problem - "Well sorry Sir, but we were unable to drive it at 70mph to replicate the fault. But to be honest, the vibration was probably caused by the brakes, which we've now sorted by re-phasing them" So my vibration problem, which starts the car vibrating at 70mph, is down to my whistling discs that weren't whistling before the vibration started. Ho-hum - now to see if I can get it into a Mazda dealer for them to try and sort it.... Quote
festa Posted September 27, 2011 Report Posted September 27, 2011 torch it !! it won't solve sod all but it will end the vibs and squeaks Quote
