Hi Guys,

Been kitesurfing for four years on a 140 dualflex pretty bog standard board and tried a mates the other day - got an angle upwind I'd never achieved before and am now hankering for a new board!

However I play a lot of rugby and weigh 115 kilos (18 stone) and wondered if anyone could recommend a good board for the heavier kitesurfer!?

Any feedback appreciated

Cheers

how about a caution hustla great boards and man enough for your weight they're great edging so good upwind capabilities but quite expensive but they do pop up occasionally 2nd hand ppl seem to hang on to them.

malcolm - cheers looks like a good place to start! and ta sonny I'll look into it - not particularly wide and since buying it the trend seems to have been towards shorter, wider boards.

The Flyrace is a monster Stu haha not for me though I don't think

Any others for the list?

thanks

Have a look at the Ocean Rodeo King. A super board which can be used as a twin tip ,Mutant, Directional or skim you choose for the days conditions.

It will work with your weight well and still give and excellent all round performance. If you need a demo drop me a PM

Try em all... I'm 105 Kg and generally ride a Spleene Door 154. It gets me out in most conditions so worth a look / trial. Also have a look at the Flydoors. I'm actually looking at smaller boards at the moment and the King George or the biggest of the Shinn Monks might do but the OR's look interesting although I'm led to believe that they take a little getting used to.

It depends what kind of board your after.

If you want low wind performance the Flydoor is your answer.

If you want a freeride board then check out the Flyradical in a size L or maybe even XL.

Cheers guys will have a look through all of your suggestions - thanks for the feedback! and true Westwood - should've said, not interested in low wind performance tbh - just a board that has good edging and upwind performance with some rocker for choppy water and pop for jumps and messing about and in particular a big board that will still allow me to edge when the wind picks up - the caution Hustla looks like the closest to that description so far, but i havent been able to find them for sale!

I used to be 105 kg and after trying a few different boards found the large size 2010 Nobile NHP hard to beat. It's 137 x 44, lots of rocker for soft landings, goes really well upwind and has plenty of pop so pretty good all round.

Dropped down to 79kg when economy went to sh1t & couldn't afford to eat so it's too big to control when the wind gets up now. Still have the board tho, very tempted to put boots on it. Seriously good board for a heavier rider, and doesn't feel massive to ride.

Hi

I'm the same weight.

I use a Spleene Rip+ 138X44 (few yrs old now) with 14m kite, it steams upwind but is hard on the knees in a blow.

I have a Wainman Blunt 135 (first version) for use with 12 & 10m kites, really easy on the knees and cushions when landing. Will go upwind so long as plenty of wind.

New Spleene Rips look interesting as an all round board.

This may be a dum question but y do u need a bigger board in light winds y not a bigger kite?

You can go either way really... It all comes down to preference although the ultimate for low wind is, of course, to have a big kite and a big board...e.g. a 21M Speed 3 with a Flydoor or something similar. However, big kites are slow(er) so some folks don't like to fly them...and would prefer a smaller, faster turning kite and ride a big board...like a door (again) or a surfboard that floats. I've seen some really skilled riders on relatively small kites (10M) stay out way beyond everyone else simply by having good technique. About the only limit on this is that whatever kite you fly you should be able to keep it in the air without too much effort.... Working a small kite to get up some apparent wind is fine but you do want to park it occasionally without the kite falling out of the sky. All kites at the very bottom of their range will simply fall out of the sky but I've a 15M Speed 3 as my big kite and it stays in the air with practically no wind whatsoever. It's not the biggest of the Speeds so has a less agricultural turning radius. I could probably get a couple of knots lower on one of the bigger versions but I'm happy to work the 15M a litle harder at the bottom while gaining a fair few extra knots on the top end.

I am also a heavier chap.

I have a Shinn Monk 135x44 for normal conditions and a LF kitefish (skim / surfboard) 5'3 for ultra low winds. I personally would not go bigger than a 15m, I have flown some bigger kites but I think they are excessive unless your going out in 8 knots or have a light wind specialist board... sector 60, door etc..

You could also look at the Airush Protoy 'Exile' range... my last one was 138x46 and got me going nice and early but was a bit harsh on the knees...

the nobile mentioned by yorkshireboy was another i was gonna mention 2nd to the caution and yeah they don't make the cautions anymore kites either for the last couple of yrs but i think they still have items brand new like boards warehoused up somewhere josh and of course the spleenes and flydoors from flysurferin loads of different widths lengths and styles some flexible some with big rockers outstanding upwind capabilities its a case of test and try your ultimate one mans perfect board doesn't suit everyone.
