gum-nuts Posted May 22, 2013 Report Posted May 22, 2013 Which do you use and why? I am a YouTuber - I have joined Vimeo as a basic member but have never been able to get anything to upload! Do you have to have more than a basic membership to get video's on there or am I just doing stuff wrong? Why should I pay when I can do the same for free? Quote
jhn.holgate Posted May 22, 2013 Report Posted May 22, 2013 I use both. I think Vimeo is way better than youTube. Vimeo has no really annoying ads and they don't take me to task about whether I wrote my own music or not. Plus they come down pretty hard on you if you flog other people's footage. And from what I've seen, there's far less angst on Vimeo. AND, you can download the file straight from Vimeo and if you are a 'plus' member, you can allow your original files to be downloaded. Disadvantages of vimeo....slower and sometimes 'buggy' uploading. There's something not quite right with whatever servers ? they're using to upload videos. If you get on the Vimeo 'help' forum, there are dozens and dozens of people complaining about ultra slow uploading speeds. Sometimes my uploads go ok, othertimes it's a trial. Youtube is much faster uploading and more 'popular'. And you can make money from youtube. Not a fat lot, granted, unless you score a 'viral' hit but better than nothing. Weird thing about the copyright....youtube are dynamite on soundtracks. I've even had videos held up for months and months while they figure out if I am actually the copyright owner or not......when there's no f"ing music!!!! (this applies to monetizing videos). And yet I see people rip-off tv footage left right and center on youtube and get away with it. Vimeo is the opposite...sure, they tell you that you can't use other people's music, but they don't penalize you unless the publisher complains to them. But they seem pretty strict with the footage you use. Oh, and on some forums, Vimeo won't embedd...sorta what I mean about youtube being 'popular'. If you can get things to upload ok and you're not trying to make some money, go Vimeo. ps: I'm a 'plus' member on Vimeo, but that doesn't mean my videos upload any faster. I'm lucky if they upload at more than 100kbs. Quote
Clive Posted May 22, 2013 Report Posted May 22, 2013 I have put mine on Vimeo, only a basic no pay member, sometimes it takes a while to upload, but it's friendly enough, I personally think the quality of the footage is a little better there, but it is probably a function of people taking more time, plus i think they encourage people to think about what they do, there is a number of how to videos available. It seems to be marketed at the enthusiast movie maker. There is some really high quality stuff there.... Mine don't quite fall into that category but I do try. Plus I happily pirate soundtracks and haven't been pulled up on that yet, but the footage is all mine. Quote
SoutherlyBuster Posted May 22, 2013 Report Posted May 22, 2013 I take advantage of both worlds. youtube has no file size limits which is great, whereas with vimeo you are limited to 500 Mbytes and that is a big limitation. I'm a fuss pot and refuse to knock the quality setting down and have fuzzy pictures so it fits to 500 Mbytes. Sure you can fork out the dollars and have that limitation lifted in vimeo but why pay if you can get it free. Vimeo side: love their music centre, you pick the tracks you want to add to your video, pay the small amount giving you rights to use it in your video. For quality videos vimeo is definitely the go. Free stuff? Well my son told me youtube are considering limiting certain channels to paid up subscribers, bahhh. Will it happen? Hey John, with youtube argueing about your sound tracks, I would take that as a compliment. But yes, it would be frustrating. While we are on the subject of music sound tracks, have you thought John of publishing your sound tracks on that Vimeo music centre and get some dollars for your efforts? Regards, Norman. Quote
jhn.holgate Posted May 22, 2013 Report Posted May 22, 2013 have you thought John of publishing your sound tracks on that Vimeo music centre and get some dollars for your efforts? I advertised my music site and told people (on the Vimeo forum) that if they wanted to use stuff, go ahead - just make a note in the credits. Am happy for anyone to use my stuff for free unless it's a commercial thing. Don't think anyone's actually taken me up on the offer! There are indeed some absolutely amazing videos on Vimeo. Quote
m.klinge Posted May 22, 2013 Report Posted May 22, 2013 I prefer vimeo - less teenage'ing more quality. At least that's the way I see it Just a basic member as I don't make many movies, but if I did I for sure would pay to go premium. I like the dropbox upload feature, this way I can export straight to my dropbox folder on my pc, and let dropbox handle the upload (over night) and then tell vimeo to get the movie in the cloud. Simple, easy and works flawless every time I've done it //M Quote

gum-nuts Posted May 23, 2013 Author Report Posted May 23, 2013 The dropbox thing sounds good - what sort of size/length videos can you upload in basic? And is it a per video max size or is it over a period - I've been struggling to find this info on Vimeo. I guess if you don'y have a sound track that reduces the overall file size? Quote
jhn.holgate Posted May 23, 2013 Report Posted May 23, 2013 I uploaded a 350mb video to drop box this morning at 67kbs......yawn. Probably just as slow as uploading it directly to Vimeo. However, it went from Dropbox to Vimeo in a few minutes....seems to have worked out pretty well. Could be a much better option if the Vimeo uploading is a bit 'glitchy'. I think I saw a 2.5gb limit on the dropbox? Will have to clean it out regularly. Quote

You can get more space quite easily and/or cheap - quite a few new phones pack extra dropbox space :-) //M Quote
SoutherlyBuster Posted May 23, 2013 Report Posted May 23, 2013 Vimeo size limit with standard is 500 Mbytes total per week. No limit on the number of videos, just the total of all video must not exceed 500 Mbytes in any one week. Quote
jhn.holgate Posted May 23, 2013 Report Posted May 23, 2013 Did you use the desktop or browser to upload? I just dragged the video file straight into the dropbox icon on the bottom of the screen. No browser needed. Quote
gum-nuts Posted May 23, 2013 Author Report Posted May 23, 2013 I have just added a video it vimeo - using the vimeo app for the ipad, pretty quick to upload. The app works for me as I use Pinnacle Studio on the ipad for editing my vids... I have also just signed up for Dropbox as well! Quote
m.klinge Posted May 23, 2013 Report Posted May 23, 2013 I just dragged the video file straight into the dropbox icon on the bottom of the screen. No browser needed. Ok i guess i really never did pay attention to my upload speed, as my usual way of doing it, is to export directly to th dropbox folder and leave the computer for a while. Then dropbox takes care of uploading to the cloud withut me having to do anything else. And i can remotely get the video on vimeo without being in front of the computer (For instance do it from Work) :-) //M Quote
Bones Posted May 24, 2013 Report Posted May 24, 2013 I have about 60Gb available in my dropbox, which they gave me just for connecting three different devices. Dropbox is slow for large files, but then if you leave your computer on it takes care of itself. No need to wait around for it, just go away and leave it, and it won't lock up your internet while it does it. The cool thing is all of the photos and video I take on my phone is automatically uploaded, so when I want to see them on my computer they are already there Quote
gum-nuts Posted May 26, 2013 Author Report Posted May 26, 2013 Just added my second video to vimeo - edited on iMovie on our brand new iMac, and uploaded to vimeo in about 10 minutes... Quote
sherwinelioreg21 Posted May 26, 2013 Report Posted May 26, 2013 I'm actually using youtube when uploading videos, haven't utilize vimeo but for viewing purpose, I actually use both, just one thing that annoys me when viewing youtube videos are those ads that suddenly appears.. can you actually edit videos in vimeo?
