betty swallox Posted July 1, 2010 Report Posted July 1, 2010 Hello all. i have been windsurfing for a few years now and have decided i would like to defect. I work at sea and do a month on month off and have tried twice to get lessons. Once in poole and the other at witterings. Both times the wind packed up in day one so i never got passed body dragging. So i went back to windsurfing thinking it was to much agro trying to get the knowlage and a little to risky to self teach as i did with the windsurfing. However now i have been playing with my daughters fixed bridle kite 2.4m and a landboard where i figured i could self teach in a safer enviroment and then crossover as gettin lessons to coincide with wind is a nightmare. So now i'm ready for a decent sized kite but don't want to spend loadsa money on foil depower kites only to have to splash out (see what i did there?) again on inflatable kites in order to take to the water which is obviously the goal. Do i have to bite the bullet or can i continue to landboard using a kite that can then be taken on the water once i feel i have cracked the land board completely. Cheers Betty Quote
sniels Posted July 1, 2010 Report Posted July 1, 2010 Thats what i did/do (even including the offshore job ), only i kept my foils and use 'em on the water The basics you learn with ± a years worth of intensive landboarding, combined with your windsurfing background should do the trick i guess. At a certain point you know you can do it. If you still don't feel you're up to it, you can anyway try and book a new lesson. And it is not forbidden to fly inflato's on land. That is the best option, to get to know the kite you want to use later on the water. Quote
betty swallox Posted July 1, 2010 Author Report Posted July 1, 2010 ha ha,just read the 'Just bought my first kite' thread (well most of it) and can now hear the eyes rolling and tuts from here. Just thought i'd add that i am again looking at lessons at witterings and Southampton kitesurf centre. Hopefully i can get fitted in next time home when there is some wind but till now doing that to fit in with my leave has been a mare. I'm not as was described on said thread a deluded e bayer. i Still think that a two day course is very little and will want to practice with my landboard and a kite that can be used on water so if anyone can throw some kite advice my way, (i am 75kg) i'd be much obliged. Bigbud Posted July 2, 2010 Report Posted July 2, 2010 Hey Fella, Your flying a fixed bridle, you know about tides and wind strengths ect from your pole dancing. Don't be cocking about with land boards if its the water you want to get on, as soon as you have done your 2 days lessons I'm sure you'll be rocking Get yourself a 12m and a 9m kite and a 135-140 x 40 board and share the stoke If you want any advice on kites and stuff just shout !! There is a good setup for sale from steve_w thou if you want to jump the gun on equipment Quote
Kite Kid Posted July 2, 2010 Report Posted July 2, 2010 It can be done but make sure you know your stuff. I would highly recommend lessons, but if you are really keen on doing it on your own these can help kitesurf progression dvds on the way of kites leis are fine on land as long as its not to gusty, something like the ozone catalyst could be a good bet low cost easy setup good re-launch Quote
plummet Posted July 2, 2010 Report Posted July 2, 2010 if your intention is the water then just buy an lei or 2. however they are less robust and you will hammer them into the ground. so get your flying skills dialled first. ps landboarding is more hardcore than kitesurfing!. true you can juts potter around. however if you stuff up the ground is hard unlike the water. I do both water and land and enjoy both. Quote

g0nz01599968659 Posted July 5, 2010 Report Posted July 5, 2010 The Catalyst looks like a good price... wait till you see the cost of a 2011 Cabrinha Xbow Some of the packages will be cheaper than that ie Charger 11m + Haze 141 = £999, so you get a good all round kite & board together. Got a charger on the water if you want to come over & try one out Quote

With regards to kites come down and try a few on your lesson we have Kahoonas and Envys in the school and alot more at the shop, all the forementioned kites look great and well priced too, it's always worth trying a few, one of them will just feel right and work for you.
