crut Posted April 12, 2010 Report Posted April 12, 2010 I will be getting. But will buy in the UK as I want 3G 64Gb. Quote
lunaloco Posted April 12, 2010 Report Posted April 12, 2010 I will be getting. But will buy in the UK as I want 3G 64Gb. but will you get 1st gen with no multitasking or 2nd gen that is already due in the summer (in the US) that DOES have multitasking? Quote
crut Posted April 12, 2010 Report Posted April 12, 2010 but will you get 1st gen with no multitasking or 2nd gen that is already due in the summer (in the US) that DOES have multitasking? What are you talking about? iPad will have multi-tasking when iPhone OS 4.1 is released in the Autumn. At the moment iPhones run OS 3.1 At the moment iPads run OS 3.2 3.2 is incompatible with 3.1 because it was developed behind closed doors specifically for the iPad. The next update will be 4.0 for the iPhone which will have multitasking. They are going to fold all changes made for the iPad in 3.2 into 4.1 where the iPad and the iPhone will both be running the same OS snapshot. The 4.1 will be an update to all iPads. There is unlikely to be any hardware updates to the iPad for 9+ months. Quote
kiteaholic Posted April 12, 2010 Report Posted April 12, 2010 whats the point of the ipad really? it looked nice when i saw it the first time but no flash, no multitasking, no widescreen display, no usb input. lol some phones out at the moment is more advance... Quote

Flash sucks. Show me any mobile device that has a good flash implementation. Multitasking is on its way (and very nicely designed). Widescreen displays look fine when held horizontally, they look really odd when held vertically. Aesthetically I can see why they chose the 4:3 design. USB input for what? Quote
troy1599968664 Posted April 12, 2010 Report Posted April 12, 2010 cruts defending this ipad like no bodies business. have to say i'd rather just buy another super slim laptop rather than this. i cant see much use for it with an iphone. it just appears to be an ipod touch with a bigger screen and internet on the go. i can however see the use for home cinema systems and home server use. but its probably to held down by apple to allow for such cool things to be allowed Quote

USB input for what? how does flash suck? how can apple say best internet experience with most sites not even working properly due to the flash support? and no, its no widescreen display so no matter what anyone say, it will never be as good watching movies then a normal laptop. usb input? lol lets see i want to put my photos of my camera on it or plug my portable hdd in it to watch movies etc etc. lol dont know who you wanna convert, but it definately wont be me. for half the money they charge you can get a laptop with a million time better specs and useability. and if you want a touch screen device, my toshiba laptop is full touchscreen laptop, works a treat and cost the same then their 64gb version. i get a full touch screen hd screen, 4gig ram, i5 processor, 320 gig hdd, decent video card, dvd drive, lol should i go on? as for mobile phone with decent flash, my n900 does the job. flash 9.4 at moment which can be laggy sometime but with flash 10 already due for release in next couple of months suppose to be as good as any computer. either way at the moment things like facebook everything works brilliantly as it is. rather some form of flash then no fom hey? Morgan Posted April 12, 2010 Report Posted April 12, 2010 I want one but can't afford it at the moment even at the US prices . Quote
Cyprino Posted April 12, 2010 Report Posted April 12, 2010 I'll have another iPod touch please - far more portable. I'm firmly in the category of 'if I want something that size it will be a netbook / small laptop' crut - you make a very good point about the screen! 16:9 screens do look bloody strange when stood upright. Quote
The Geoff Posted April 12, 2010 Report Posted April 12, 2010 I'd like one, but just as a pretty toy to mess about with. I'd probably break it within a week. No way would I actually buy one though. Quote
igloo123 Posted April 12, 2010 Report Posted April 12, 2010 If it was cheaper, and I didn't already own a laptop i could see myself buying one. The ease of consuming things like the internet, books music and films both in your home and on the move would be cool. Ultimately though it is just a netbook with a touchscreen instead of a keyboard, but goddamit it looks cool Quote
cookie121 Posted April 12, 2010 Report Posted April 12, 2010 Not for me thank you, nerdy gadget with nothing new to offer, the future is just around the corner though using electrowetting tech rather than lcd! Each to their own but don't go crying when the screen cracks, you may say its got a protective cover, but that makes it the same as a laptop?? BBC News - Colour e-readers with video shown off Quote
Disco_Bison Posted April 12, 2010 Report Posted April 12, 2010 I'll be getting one, but it won't be until Christmas probably or sometime after that. I'll wait for any bugs to be ironed out and see what the next upgrade brings and go from there Quote
lunaloco Posted April 12, 2010 Report Posted April 12, 2010 Maybe we should consider getting a WePad instead .... (no not a weepad). WePad - Designed in Germany | WePad Quote
kiteaholic Posted April 12, 2010 Report Posted April 12, 2010 the problem with the wepad is it doesnt have the apple logo on it:rolleyes: Quote
crut Posted April 12, 2010 Report Posted April 12, 2010 the problem with the wepad is it doesnt have the apple logo on it:rolleyes: Nah, you're mistaken, it doesn't run a decent software platform or have the 10+ hours battery life of an tablet with an Apple logo Quote
lunaloco Posted April 12, 2010 Report Posted April 12, 2010 Nah, you're mistaken, it doesn't run a decent software platform or have the 10+ hours battery life of an tablet with an Apple logo Here's the technical fact sheet: http://www.neofonie.de/files/product_specifications_WePad_1004012.pdf It does indeed "only" have 6 hours of battery life, which doesn't sound bad in my opinion. I think the decent software platform is up for discussion though. Linux is usually considered pretty stable if I'm not mistaken. You don't happen to get a pay check from Apple now, do you crut? Quote
kiteaholic Posted April 12, 2010 Report Posted April 12, 2010 lol since when is linux not a decent operating system. funny stuff. as for the battery life of the ipad, they did the same with the iphone lol, giving it a stupid time table but if you read the small print it gives you 10 if you run it as dim as possible etc etc etc. my iphone battery life was terrible, one of the reasons i got rid of it.... anyways, anyone to their own, if you can warrant spending that amount of money that is not a 10th of a similar priced laptop, go for it Quote
kiter_ryan Posted April 12, 2010 Report Posted April 12, 2010 I too will be getting one Not for a while though! Quote
crut Posted April 12, 2010 Report Posted April 12, 2010 Whilst I come across as a screaming Apple fan boy (which I am) - I wanted to explain why I am excited about the iPad. I've been a UNIX user (mainly Linux, Solaris et al at University and now joined with Mac OSX) for best part of 14 years. I think Linux is fantastic and my "decent software platform" jibe at the WePad is due to Android which has as many miss-givings from a developer stance as iPhone OS, Blackberry OS etc. Yes it uses a Linux kernel but for the most part Android is as close to "Linux" you get on the desktop as iPhone OS is (they are both unix inspired systems underneath). I've been programming for many years. I have my own language. My point is: I'm a proper 100% geek. Ever since I can remember I've been wanting a tablet style device that is small enough that you could confuse it with a book. Something that had the interaction you read in books, saw in films. I wanted the Hitch Hikers Guide. But for real. I honestly thought with the development of the iPhone my desire would be sated. I utterly adore my 3G, I can't wait to upgrade to the next iPhone. I love the OS. As a user, I love the applications it comes with and the wide variety of excellent software that has been developed for it. As a developer, having played with most software development kits available for the various mobile platforms, I found being able to program my mobile phone - which is always connected to the net - that has GPS - that has got genuinely responsive touch controls - with the same tools and language I can use to build software for my desktop a delight. Unfortunately I found myself frustrated - mostly when sat watching a film. Or looking up wind reports. Or reading twitter. I wanted the same experience I had on my phone but with a bigger screen. That was it. I realised that if the iPhone just had a bigger screen, it would make something like web browsing damn near perfect. Since the announcement of the iPad I've spent a lot of time thinking about it - I'm looking forward to streaming video to it over the network. I'm looking forward to the ease of quickly looking up film information from IMDB whilst sat on the sofa with my wife without the intrusion of a laptop. I'm looking forward to taking it into business meetings retaining access to documents, emails etc without coming across as rude for having a laptop out. I'm looking forward to being able to carry large volumes of technical and scientific papers around with me and being able to read them where ever. I'm looking forward to the genuinely 10+ hours of battery life for flights when my laptop ceases to run after 5 hours use. I am really looking forward to running some of the software I've been writing for it - specifically the wind application I've written. It wont replace my desktop, my laptop or my iPhone. It will fit nicely in the gap where I want a little more from my phone without having to lug a laptop about. I've no intention to convert people - I don't care what other people use, I'm too excited about what I get to use. What I do care about is that people understand that I'm not a mindless screaming fan boy, but a fan boy through meticulously thought out decision. I'll also admit to enjoying the occasional troll feeding. Quote
