Has anybody buggied on 80 mile beach between Port Hedland and Broome?

Would be one hell of a journey if it was possible, I am just looking into the possibility of a buggy trip up there, just wondered if anybody new what it was like (soft sand? Hard packed? Is it wide enough? Major obstacles etc.)?

I guess you would need big foot buggies, 4wd support...

I'm seriously tempted to see if we could do it as some sort of charity event - maybe get some corporate sponsorship, somebody to provide equipment (kites and buggies), proper 4wd support.

Theoretically it could be done in a day if the wind was good, but could turn it into a two day event and camp at the north end of the beach in swags and make the return journey the next day!

Beach access is only available at the south end near Port Hedland and there is a caravan park there.

More thought needed, maybe write a proposal to get some sponsorship...

Would anybody be interested?

Looks a worthy adventure.

How long is the beach??? 200km ish?

If it was hard with the right wind angle/strength yourd be able to smash it out in a day maybe 2.

But as we know conditions are rearly perfect. Maybe 3 days.

I believe there is a bit of a blow carting crew up @ Broome ..... I remember reading about them a few times but I can't put my finger where.

If you are able to get in contact with them you will get a lot of your 'what are the conditions' questions answered.

I spent 1 1/2 years in Darwin which has similar weather to Broome.

1. Its aaaaaaaaaaaalways HOT

2. The winds are ficle ... light ... and commonly cross off to offshore.

Been chatting to some guys who work up there, totally buggy'able, nice and firm, large tide, no need for bigfoots apparently, can all be done on wheelbarrows, But, I have to say... It's a friggin loooong way to go for a buggy, eh??

If it was incorperated into a holiday or something then i could understand, and, correct me if i am wrong but its at least a two day drive to even get there, but I guess that would be the support vehicle!! :D

Good luck guys, I hope you pull it off!!

I would so be up for it, but next year I am part of a team doing the gasgoine dash (gas dash) in October, so thatll be my leave pass for then.

Still, I am watching with interest, :popcorm1:

Well Gum-Nuts so looking forward to getting over at the end of May, and ridding 80 Mile beach

Also wanting to ride you local Salt lake, Lake Lefroy and some big dunes if we get time. Biggest issue seems to be getting a reasonable quote for shipping on the buggies. Looks like we will not be bringing the PTW Dominator 4 just too big, but I should have an original Parastorm Gobi (which was used in the first Gobi crossing) and possibly a Dust Devil.

What other places would you guys recommend visiting for some buggy Fun?

I'm definitely interested!

I've tried looking up Blokarts in Broome before but couldn't find much. There is one post on SeaBreeze asking about it and I messaged the guy asking how we got on but never had a response. From what I understand it's a lovely beach but is often closed due to crocodiles or jellyfish or something. My father is living in Broome these days and he was telling me about it. It kills him when the beach is closed but what ever closes it it shouldn't be a problem for buggies but you may have to resist the urge to go for a dip ;)

I've been toying with the idea of doing a very similar run Kingston SE to Goolwa (170km in total) and I was largely leading a spirited discussion about crossing the Simpson on here a little while back. My plans have kind of stalled waiting for the dammed Sysmics but if your interested in chewing through the details it can be found here: viewtopic.php?f=17&t=14778

Anyway, I'm keenly interested so do please let us know of any developments. :good:

By the way, shipping buggies to Broome - not so cheep. :fear:
