jakemorries Posted February 3, 2010 Report Posted February 3, 2010 i got myself a new kite a nice 15m phantom:D cant wait to have a go on it im sure it will spank me at first Quote
parksy Posted February 3, 2010 Report Posted February 3, 2010 (edited) OOOOH v. nice, check the launch/ land vids here and utube and get as much info as poss, same old advice, first fly in lower winds, take friend/bro to help, check line length etc and familiarise yourself with kite. It will look maaahhooooooooosssiiivve when you first get her out and inflated, but it's not like flying a 15m fixed bridle, the shae of an arc means that less than 50% of the kite is actually facing up. Get used to her , have fun. Will be great for progressing on the board. Edited February 7, 2010 by parksy Quote
jakemorries Posted February 3, 2010 Author Report Posted February 3, 2010 when i got home i un wrapped the parcel and saw the size of the rucksack/bag i nearly fainted lol and i have just attempted to unwrap it in my front room and the kite is massive i couldnt un wrap it all, but what a stunning kite i have fallen in love with it already. no i just need some wind and hopefully there will be some guys/gals up the field i go to on sunday to help me. this may make me sound stupid but is the flight going to be any different to my 3m beamer????? is it like the same stlye to fly it??? its hard to explain what i mean Quote
parksy Posted February 3, 2010 Report Posted February 3, 2010 Er yeah, main difference is that you have more control over the power, I take it the kite came with a depower bar! And you have a harness( can be flown without, but you will get more from it hooked in) Your Beamer will have limited wind range as it is fixed bridle, so when the wind gets a bit stronger, the kite pulls too much and you have to down it. The Phantom is a depower, with the bar away from you, the kite will have less pull, pull the bar toward you and the kite has more power. Is this your first depower? Bit of a leap if it is, but it shouldn't take long to get used to it. One thing you'll find is that you will automatically try to pull bar towards you when getting overpowered, this is because you are used to flying with handles where you pull back for brakes. Good luck, make sure you inflate as much as poss before take off, have fun, be careful. Quote
captain caveman Posted February 4, 2010 Report Posted February 4, 2010 when i got home i un wrapped the parcel and saw the size of the rucksack/bag i nearly fainted lol and i have just attempted to unwrap it in my front room and the kite is massive i couldnt un wrap it all, but what a stunning kite i have fallen in love with it already. no i just need some wind and hopefully there will be some guys/gals up the field i go to on sunday to help me. this may make me sound stupid but is the flight going to be any different to my 3m beamer????? is it like the same stlye to fly it??? its hard to explain what i mean lmao yeah its as far from the beamer as its gets m8 ...... how big is your garden ? i have to take mine round my mums to clean after a beach session as i cant get mine fully outstretched in the garden , my neighbours think i'm nuts . make sure you go out in a nice constant wind in the low teens , follow the instruction vids carefully , FULLY inflate it , it'll be a trick at first but bare with it , took me a few attemps to be sucsessfull on solo launching but when you have the knack you'll be just as quick as everyone else . oh yeah ........ and have fun Quote
jakemorries Posted February 4, 2010 Author Report Posted February 4, 2010 Yeah it come with the bar and instructions etc. I got a dakine harness an yes it's my first de power I know it's a big jump and I have had a bit of slating from another forum about the jump in size but it's too late now I will just have to practice lots i guess Quote
Krazy Kiter Posted February 4, 2010 Report Posted February 4, 2010 deffo take a look at lauching and landing vids, ground handling of these kites takes some getting used to. having a helper is essental first time out even better, do you know someone who already has one, who could lend a hand in getting you set up and going? patience is useful too Have fun, ARCs are great kites Oh and make sure you know how the saftey works. Attach the leash to yourself or the whole thing could fly off if you ever have to use the safty! Quote
jakemorries Posted February 4, 2010 Author Report Posted February 4, 2010 I will do some home work on it and I'm going to have a look at the bar and safety stuff on it later to work it all out, I'm sure the guys and gals that I fly with on Sundays will help me out. Quote
Taunton Posted February 5, 2010 Report Posted February 5, 2010 Have fun Jake, I still get a semi on when I unwrap mine :-P One thing I'd suggest is if you get the chance, take the kite out with zero wind, just to lay out and unwind the lines and get your hand round what goes where :-) Quote
blade V Posted February 5, 2010 Report Posted February 5, 2010 Fook! 12m jump in size lol that's pretty massive. I guess the best way to progress is to throw yourself in at the deepend though hey ha ha Quote
-flyzone- Posted February 6, 2010 Report Posted February 6, 2010 Fook! 12m jump in size lol that's pretty massive. I guess the best way to progress is to throw yourself in at the deepend though hey ha ha but wouldnt a 15m phantom be more like a 7-10m fixed bridle? so its more of a 4-7m jump Quote
jakemorries Posted February 6, 2010 Author Report Posted February 6, 2010 I still get a semi lol that's a good idea about taking it out on a non windy day to just set it up I may do that tomorrow as it looks like no wind. Yeah I think I heard some where that the arc size is I think half compared to fix bridal Quote
-flyzone- Posted February 6, 2010 Report Posted February 6, 2010 not just arc, its for all depower mate, but the arcs are usaly bigger then other depowerable ones Quote
keithrturner Posted February 6, 2010 Report Posted February 6, 2010 I've done the same and just jumped from a 3m Beamer and 5m Ace to an 18m Guerilla! Regrets? - Nope not one. Had it out for the first time last week and got a bit of help setting up and launching for the first time, after that I found self relaunching not too much of a problem. It was a very low wind day which was great to start on but sometimes a struggle to keep it in the air. I'm impressed with with ARC's so far and think it will definitely bring on my boarding - good luck to ya fella, don't think you'll regret it. Quote
jakemorries Posted February 6, 2010 Author Report Posted February 6, 2010 I think I shoul be ok, like u said u coped with a big size jump I just got alot of practice to do I think Quote
SandMonster Posted February 6, 2010 Report Posted February 6, 2010 got a bit of help setting up and launching for the first time... this is the most important bit... arcs are so different to other bridled kites you really should get someone who flies arcs to help you set it up and to explain and check the depower settings and the quick release for you...please don't try it alone:cool: Quote
captain caveman Posted February 6, 2010 Report Posted February 6, 2010 Yeah it come with the bar and instructions etc. I got a dakine harness an yes it's my first de power I know it's a big jump and I have had a bit of slating from another forum about the jump in size but it's too late now I will just have to practice lots i guess meh ..... bollox to em m8 , so long as your sensible you will be fine ...... ive flown a similar size arc from amature to intermediate and never had a bad experince due to common sense ........ tauntons advice is very good as reagrds going out on a no wind day to see what it all looks like , just done this myself with a new high wind kite p.s ive said it before and i'll say it again ...... fully inflate it , it'll save you so much hassle , ive done the "that'll do" thing a few times and it always back fires Quote
jakemorries Posted February 6, 2010 Author Report Posted February 6, 2010 I'm going to take it easy with like I said I prob take it out tomorrow and try setting it up while there is no wind, I just hope that if the wind picks up then there is someone there to help me fly it etc Quote
crabman Posted February 7, 2010 Report Posted February 7, 2010 Do you know anyone who flies ARCs? If so I'd definitely recommend that you ask them to help you out on your first flight. I got a 15m Phanny a few months back, and even though I have a fair bit of experience with depower foils, the help I got from a couple of ARC flying mates was invaluable. Then thing with ARCs is that they do need a bit of wind to get working, about 8-10mph min to inflate properly. Alternatively you can have a look at CarlTheBullet's videos on YouTube - he's done a pretty spot on self launch one with a 15m Phantom. Quote
jakemorries Posted February 7, 2010 Author Report Posted February 7, 2010 I won't be flying it today I just want to set it up to work out where all the bits go etc, there is not much wind here at all today so I don't think there will be any one there to help me today Quote
jakemorries Posted February 7, 2010 Author Report Posted February 7, 2010 well im back from a visit to the field which was only suppose to be quick visit, which turned into 4 hours later lol i set the phanny up to see where everything goes and i feel more confident with that, the only thing which i need to read up on is the what knot should the power lines connect to on the kite????. i have worked out how to set and use the safety options which i feel comfortable in using. any way i decided to have a quick go on my beamer why i was there and had a good go on that even though the wind was poo. i was going to pack both kites up when a couple of guys i fly with turned up and also they brought a bit of wind only about 6mph but they showed me how to use the de power bar etc so i thought i will give the phanny a quick chance even though i never thought there will be any chance. well it filled up quite well, i cliped my self in and i just ran like forest gump lol it didnt work but it inflated a bit more. after about the 4th attempt she was up and i was flying my first depower, even with the wind so low it still managed to pull me about a bit but i still enjoyed it cos it gave me a chance to work everything out etc so i cant wait till next time with a bit more mph i hope Quote
yorkierob Posted February 7, 2010 Report Posted February 7, 2010 good on ya mate i knew ya'd be fine - as for the setup in the right wind if you fully let out the trim strap and pull the bar in the kite will backstall (fly backwards towards the ground) even better just pm chris who ya bought it off as he's a whizz with arcs and will know the settings off by heart if ya got it flying in so little wind it sounds like it was perfect Quote
jakemorries Posted February 7, 2010 Author Report Posted February 7, 2010 it was very hard to do it though im worn out now im not use to running that much lol but i have learnt lots today so it was all good fun Quote
