Just got the drawings back from the Architect for some house changes, and he's now only got 1 door between the kitchen and toilet. It's not directly off, but round the corner and under the stairs, but still only 1 door. I'll ask him about it during the week, but if in doubt then the forums will have some opinions ;)

So, do you need 2 doors between the kitchen and toilet or is this an urban myth?

Thanks experts

Down here a lot of houses have downstairs bathrooms that you can only get to through the kitchen and there is only one door, infact the door in one house i know is just next to the sink, effectivaly you can sit in the bath watching the hob lol

these are old houses though

Yep, could be allowed in older houses but some new fangled rules in place now?

Is it mechanically vented ? I.e. extraction fan :D

Fairly sure you are supposed to have two or use an extraction fan, can check later in the week for you :)

Good point, I'll make sure there's an extractor in there, don't want any dump smells in my cooking!

Don't go to any trouble, I'll have a proper answer during the week. Just thought there would be a plethora of answers from the combined knowledge of the forums and some interesting thoughts to consider.

The regs changed years ago your ok to have one door, ask your architect but he'll tell you the same.

I had to fit an on suite in a bed room once & the Guy wanted an arch way in to his bedroom

he insisted. Imagine having a S**te in your bedroom.

We're having an ensuite put in too. I don't think I'll be allowed to dump in there no matter if there is a door or an arch way!

I work in planning. A building control officer walked past as I was reading this. So I asked him and he said a single door is fine, provided you have adequate ventilation.

My invoice is in the post :)

provide ventilation... for example when you turn the light on the fan kicks in... or turns on after the light is switched off

the architect should know the building regs fairly well tbh

i have easy access to all the approved docs... and willing to let you have a browse through...;)

pretty sure you'll want Document F - Ventilation

something like a 15l/sec extractor would be fine... dependant on the size

Part F abba??? how old are your building regulations? It hasn't been refferred to as Part F for near 5 years now!!!

Think you want Section 3.14.2 of the Domestic Handbook;)

if you use a mechanical ventilation system, the last points of extraction should be the most humid rooms in the house, begin the bathroom and the kitchen. So it will first extract the fumes from your toilet before passing by your kitchen. So far for not having dump smells in your cooking :D

Well not if it all works properly obviously ...

Mate of mine lives in a house less than 6 months old and his downstairs loo is 1 door off the kitchen. There were all sorts of regs. it has to conform too like doors wide enough for wheel chairs, all have to close on springs for fire regs. (pain in the arse he reckons so lots of door stops in use) . I should emagine that the 1 door is ok then.

I thought it was only in commercial places like resturants, shops etc that were governed by any rules? :s

Nope there's 2 sets of building regs out there - Domestic and Non-Domestic.

You're right tho that in a non domestic building you require a min of 2 door seperation between a wc and a place of food prep / consumtion.

I friend of mine was surveying a house & had to explain why it wasn't ok to have a toilet in the corner of the kitchen. There was an Indian woman sat there peeling potatoes who couldn't comprehend how stupid it was that we put a wall there in the first place. Thought it was bad enough having a shite in your bed room (On suit):D
