Davef173 Posted March 6, 2009 Report Posted March 6, 2009 Hi, I want to make a strop for by handles. What line and thickness line is best? Also a web site that sells the line would be good? Quote
kiter_ryan Posted March 6, 2009 Report Posted March 6, 2009 http://www.powerkiteshop.com/flexifoil_strop_harness_line.htm i'm sure someone will advise you on making strops, but to me it sounds fairly dodgy business, would'nt want one to snap on me mid jump *shudder!* So i use a purchased one, i feel more comforted that way! windjammer1599968715 Posted March 6, 2009 Report Posted March 6, 2009 i use 6mm static cord you can get it from most climbing shops 80p/metre or sailing/chandlers shops,i cut mine to 750mm lengths then larks head both ends to the handles gives you about 450 strop. what make of handle have you got, does the powerline leader go through the handle and come out the back this is were you attach the strop Quote
Frakke1599968664 Posted March 6, 2009 Report Posted March 6, 2009 ^^^what he said ^^^ I use 8mm I think as my pulley will take up to 10mm and 6mm tends to snag and catch unless it's under permanent load mine were two handles length long when I started out then I shunk them down a bit as I improved.... BUT they should never be longer that one arms length minus about half a hand - this is so that on "full lock" you can still reach the farthest handle .... "IF" you happen to let go - and you will later on.. F Quote
tszy Posted March 6, 2009 Report Posted March 6, 2009 My mate makes them using 8mm chord in a sleeve made of PVC fuel line. He actually splices the loops back. He also makes mean footpeg covers out of high pressure gas hose - we've all got them. Quote
BeamerBob Posted March 6, 2009 Report Posted March 6, 2009 Most of my buddies and I use amsteel in 3/16ths. It has over a 3000 lb working load. It looks to be the same stuff as the flexi strops made for the new handles. I just got a flexi strop and some more amsteel to make 2 more strops for other kites, but can't speak of durability yet. Should last a long time in a pulley Quote
Davef173 Posted March 6, 2009 Author Report Posted March 6, 2009 Thanks all for the information Windjammer: I have two sets of handles, the new flexifoil pro link and the older versions flexifoil handles. Beamerbob: Were do you get the amsteel from Quote
BeamerBob Posted March 6, 2009 Report Posted March 6, 2009 I found mine at a West Marine Store in Charleston SC. It is readily available online and at some sailing/boating shops. It is made out of dyneema but big enough that it is used in place of steel cable on winches for 4 wheel drive vehicles. It is so low stretch that if it breaks under load, it just falls to the ground, so they say. I got the XL strop from Flexi and it is too big unless you have long arms and hook straight into your spreader bar. With my pulley and quick release in place, it is a tad too long. Quote
crazyman Posted March 6, 2009 Report Posted March 6, 2009 http://www.powerkiteshop.com/flexifoil_strop_harness_line.htm on the pictures on this site.. there is a funky hook system instead of a quick releace... but iv never seen these for sale... unless i just really have not looked hard enough... Quote
crazyman Posted March 6, 2009 Report Posted March 6, 2009 never mind... just not looking for the right thing; ignore me Quote
tsp13 Posted March 6, 2009 Report Posted March 6, 2009 would'nt want one to snap on me mid jump *shudder!* my mate has and it didn't look plesent. luckly he was on a board so could bail but it still looked painful Quote
frayz Posted March 6, 2009 Report Posted March 6, 2009 You cant fit anymore than 5mm behind the pins on the prolinks. I use 5mm Dyneema on all my prolinks and buggy jump on all of them. Quote
Kitebuggybagman Posted March 6, 2009 Report Posted March 6, 2009 been making these since day 1, piece of web, rolled and sewn down the middle, turn ends and sew down, cut two slits in either end of web, double web back through to form loops and thread onto handles, work well, last a fair time until the hook saws through the web. 36" long for me when not threadded to handles Quote

Frakke1599968664 Posted March 6, 2009 Report Posted March 6, 2009 You cant fit anymore than 5mm behind the pins on the prolinks. I use 5mm Dyneema on all my prolinks and buggy jump on all of them. I got 5mm behind mine (I think) and then pigtailed it to get 8mm strop cord on and I only use one set of handles and lines then swap the canopies off at the other end it only takes a couple of minutes F Quote
frayz Posted March 6, 2009 Report Posted March 6, 2009 Got any pics Frakke? Ive got 5mm on all my prolinks, but would like larger if i could fit it on. Quote
mikeymustard Posted March 6, 2009 Report Posted March 6, 2009 I use this Mammut - 5mm Static Pro Cord x 1 metre, strong and very flexible, they'll cut it into any lengths you want. I don't buggyjump with it btw Quote
jewbs123 Posted March 6, 2009 Report Posted March 6, 2009 I`ve recently made myself some strops. I had some 4mm dyneema rope left over from when I sailed. I cut various lengths and made loops on each end by sewing the rope together and whipping with whipping twine. Once done they are pretty strong and secure. You can then either attach them to the leaders with a larks head or around the pin of the prolinks. I know 4mm is a bit thin but I use a small block so have no worries about catching. Would work just as well with 5mm. I`m still not entirely happy with my strop length at the moment so I`m using some 4mm dyneema but using bowline knots at each end to form the loops, ( i`m using this with a set of prolink handles). Bowlines get tighter the harder the pull but release very easily, this means I can stop and adjust the length of the strop whilst Im out flying. Once I`m totally happy with my strop length then I`ll take note of the length and make up proper strops. Quote
rambo Posted April 3, 2009 Report Posted April 3, 2009 i am using 4mm at the mo with a small pully, surely the diameterof the cord doesnt matter o much as longas it has a good braking strain, especially when you bare in mind the diameter of the main flying lines.. Quote
c quad madness Posted April 3, 2009 Report Posted April 3, 2009 The thicker cord prevents problems from snagging in the pulley but as you say if it runs fine through the pulley it's the strength that matters, it's 6mm climbing accessory rope on all of my handles. I re mod my handles so the leaders and strop are one length. Quote
Frakke1599968664 Posted April 3, 2009 Report Posted April 3, 2009 cord diameter makes a BIG diference depending on the size of the pulley... Mine takes 10mm and I use 8mm cord and that still jamms from time to time so when I use 6mm cord I have to be very careful... @ flat out - no I haven't got pictures and I wasn't ignoring you ... I'll need some time as I'm off on holiday tomorow but I'll get you some when I get back :D:D in a couple of weeks if you still want them that late F Quote
frayz Posted April 3, 2009 Report Posted April 3, 2009 Okaymate, yeah im always interested in seeing stuff Quote
Dan R Posted April 14, 2009 Report Posted April 14, 2009 Hi guys, Been reading this thread but got one question about strops! I'm using my fixed bridle kites on a board at the mo and want to use a strop on a standard spreader bar. Is a pully the best thing to use to stop damage to the strop, instead of the standard hook spreader? Or is there something I'm missing? Quote
tsp13 Posted April 14, 2009 Report Posted April 14, 2009 Or is there something I'm missing? a roller. it is just a spreader bar with no hook and has a pull type thing on it. http://www.powerkiteshop.com/accessories/librearminatorspreaderbar.htm or a cheaper version http://www.powerkiteshop.com/accessories/peterlynnswivelpulleyharness.htm don't know what ether are like i have never tryed them Quote
tsp13 Posted April 14, 2009 Report Posted April 14, 2009 ^^^^^^ i presum thats not what u mean by pully. becasuse u can also have a normal pully which the strop gose though and is then cliped to your harness. if u get what i mean Quote
