Stroud is a classic, but for an easy introduction I'd recommend Arthur's "Applicable Mathematics and Mathematical Models", far, faaaar better. ;)

If anyone's interested, I work as a science buyer for a national chain (Blackwell) and might be able to talk the boss into a FlexiForum discount. I'm on holiday at the moment, but I'll look into it next week - it would cover everything by the way, not just science type books.

The big question, however, is has anyone here written a book? You should see some of the nonsense we occasionally get sent, it can't be that difficult!

I picked up Charlie Brookers 'Dawn Of The Dumb' for £3 from HMV. He most recently wrote channle 4s 'Dead Set' but has been writeing scathing and funny colombs in the Gardean (sp?) for about 10 years and this book is the pick of the best of them, in which amongst other things he discribes Nicky Campbell as the antichrist.

Well as this is going more sci-fi fantasy than anywhere else....

I was always captivated by William Gibson Cyberpunk novels, read Neuromancer when it was first published by Gollancz in the yellow SF covers!

Recently I've found Richard Morgan's Altered Carbon (and others) which are a good substitute.

However, I'm always looking for the next Peter Hamiliton book. Fallen Dragon and any of the Greg Mandel stories would definatley be in my top 10.

By the way, what is it about Stroud?

I took Marine Surveying and still had to use it as a core text?

No idea on the Stroud - it's one of those publisher things I think, write a book that's good enough, get the publishers to recommend it to enough Unis, suddenly it's a standard text.

If you like Gibson you'll love Charles Stross - I'm on Accelerando at the moment and it's exponentially bigger than Neuromancer but on the same theme. Weirdly, I don't like it. I'm not sure why, I think it's the characters and the fact that on each page I have to stop and research three bits of technology and their applications.....but that's just the way my mind works. He's a SF overdose in my world, leaves me feeling all confused and pointless. Or is that good SF?

If you get anything to do with marine conservation or marine ID (plus the normal set texts from uni) then I'd definitly be interested in that one!

Sorry, don't do creationist stuff in my section, you want "Mind Body & Spirit" for Marine ID ;)

I thought about argueing for creationists on my 1st yr "story of life" module which was all about evolution and the big bang etc but then realised that I wouldn't be able to live with myself afterwards! :o

Um, sort of..... :o Have been trying to write a purely fiction mythological type book for the last year..... Sorry to say that pain really interferes with my creative ability tho. (Don't suppose constant lack of sleep and therefore chronic fatigue helps either.) :(

Aye, i've written stories but wheres the point in going to press? they only tare them to shreds, suggest 'Alterations' that'll appeal to whatever market they think it'll sell to best and you know the worst part? 70% of the books on the shelves of any bookshop no matter what the genre get no more that £5000 per year for the author. Remember, you have to pay the publisher for distrobution and publishing if you have to resort to self publishing.

Then again, if you like the idea of being a published author... whats the harm? Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Philip K Dick - Flow My Tears, The Policeman Said...it's got me through the 9hr flight over to Florida and it'll get me through the 8hr flight back!

...Yeah i'm a slow reader! Which the Mrs laughs at - she can get through a 600 pager in about 3hrs!!
