Two Hands Posted January 29, 2010 Report Posted January 29, 2010 OK folks... Here's the date to put in your diary's, March 7th 2010, It's the Labor day weekend and is an 11-5pm affair. Let me know if you're interested in attending, and yes, we Freestylers have been invited back to put on demo's Tryouts begin next week WD Quote
nigel Posted January 29, 2010 Report Posted January 29, 2010 Been before and a nice little event. Only problem is most of us Extreme kiters will be at Sandy Point. I think Craig and or Matt from PL are going to be there. Will try and make it, but the lure of a huge beach and a new speed record are a bit more tempting. Hope the AKA are going to be there to swell the ranks. Quote
steve_hobart Posted January 29, 2010 Report Posted January 29, 2010 Hey WD, Are you going to take some video of yourself this year? I'd look fwd to seeing that.. cheers steve Quote
Two Hands Posted January 29, 2010 Author Report Posted January 29, 2010 I think you might find that the video can be a very wind dependent thing So have you been checking the airfares to Melb? Quote
KaoS Posted January 30, 2010 Report Posted January 30, 2010 Thanks for the heads up. I'll see if I can work out a day trip Kevin Willunga, S.A. Quote
steve_hobart Posted February 3, 2010 Report Posted February 3, 2010 Hi WD, airfares are cheap...but getting someone to look after my kids for the weekend isn't... I'd love the opportunity to get some lessons from you and kevin though (or are all your kites still in transit from all of your international globe trotting kevin:-)))) cheers steve Quote
Two Hands Posted February 5, 2010 Author Report Posted February 5, 2010 Hey Kevin, It would be great to have you pop in on us! I'm sure we can make it a hospitable experience @Steve, mate just park to kids in front of Man vs Wild with a flint and a knife, that should get you 2 days WD Quote
KaoS Posted February 10, 2010 Report Posted February 10, 2010 I've booked my flights! Come on over Steve! Quote
steve_hobart Posted February 10, 2010 Report Posted February 10, 2010 can you look after my kids for the weekend Kevin ? Quote
Cesium Posted February 11, 2010 Report Posted February 11, 2010 Kaos, reckon you could make it to Moran as well? Quote
KaoS Posted February 13, 2010 Report Posted February 13, 2010 Kaos, reckon you could make it to Moran as well? I fly in late Saturday and fly out early Monday :-( Sadly the air fare difference for more convenient times was prohibitive. I'm sure we can have fun at Rosebud though Kevin Willunga, S.A. Quote
Two Hands Posted February 23, 2010 Author Report Posted February 23, 2010 I'm twisting the arm of yet another notable kite flyer, now if that doesn't work I'm going to go the half nelson and try to get a tap out Jeez we're a dedicated bunch! TH Quote
Two Hands Posted March 1, 2010 Author Report Posted March 1, 2010 OK Folks!! Final roll call, Forecast for Sunday Cloud increasing. Isolated showers. Winds west to southwesterly averaging up to 20 km/h. City Shower or two. Min 14 Max 24 As it stands I know of 3 of us rolling down to it, I've got my Ace in a hole , and Two Hands is a certain and I hear there's going to be some Kaos in the house.... Time for the wood work to turn out some extra's I'm hoping, we'll be well looked after down there with the festival stating that we're a valuable part of the event! I'm asking every one to send out word to all the freestyle sport kiters that we know to make an effort to attend, it's a chance for us to get together for a bit of social and a bit of play and hopefully quite a bit of flying!! Come on guys, lets rock this little town and show the folks out there that freestyle is the way of the future As Neil Young should have said "Keep on rocking it in the freestyle world" !!!! nigel Posted March 1, 2010 Report Posted March 1, 2010 Not sure where your getting your forecast, but the Mornington Pen. forecast is this: Forecast for Sunday Cloudy. Scattered showers and the chance of thunderstorms. Winds northeast to northwesterly averaging up to 25 km/h becoming light during the evening. Mornington Few showers.Min 14 Max 20 At least the Northerlies come from over the water and might be a little bit more un-gusty than normal. 50/50 to be there, but if it's no good for speed runs at Sandy Point, I should be there. KaoS Posted March 1, 2010 Report Posted March 1, 2010 Okay, I'll put vented kites in the bag! Kevin Willunga, S.A. Quote
nigel Posted March 4, 2010 Report Posted March 4, 2010 Well he's the forecast from the BOM for the Bay: Forecast for Sunday Winds: North to northwesterly 5 to 10 knots tending southwesterly during the morning then tending southerly 10 to 15 knots during the afternoon. Seas: 0.5 to 1 metres. Isolated thunderstorms in the morning. Melbourne forecast: Forecast for Sunday Cloudy. Scattered showers. Isolated thunderstorms from the morning until late afternoon. Light winds tending southerly up to 25 km/h around midday. City Chance of storms. Showers. Min14 Max21 BYO jacket, might be a little wet. NO shelter (or very little) at the field either. Quote

While the EK weather service looks pretty nice, all these discrepencies that've come to light recently are little bit of a worry for us wind hunters. Quote

While the EK weather service looks pretty nice, all these discrepencies that've come to light recently are little bit of a worry for us wind hunters. I'm not touching that one with a barge pole!! All the forecasts come from the BOM, but as Joel has informed me there are upto 6 different forecasts available. I'd be inclined to say the Port Phillip bay forecast is going to be quite accurate, it's only the sea breezes they tend to get wrong, as they can be stronger at the top of the bay near Melbourne, when expected. For down at Rosebud, all the forecasts seem to say much the same, so that's what I'd expect to get. The EK forecast for Melbourne says light SE'ers (with some East in there early) with a 15 knot peak around 8pm. All I can say is that they are all computer modeled, and if they are right, well done to the BOM. But it does make me wonder if they are hedging their bets with different forecasts???? Quote
steve_hobart Posted March 4, 2010 Report Posted March 4, 2010 Okay, I'll put vented kites in the bag! Kevin Willunga, S.A. sounds like you may be taking home some vented kites even if you didnt turn up with them! cheers steve Quote
KaoS Posted March 7, 2010 Report Posted March 7, 2010 sounds like you may be taking home some vented kites even if you didnt turn up with them! cheers steve I took home EXACTLY what I took to the airport :-(( Flights were cancelled due to weather, and even with rescheduling they couldn't get me to Melbourne airport any earlier than midday Sunday. But get this! Virgin Blue "didn't cancel the flight", Melbourne airport was closed due to the storms. Not "technically" VB's fault, so no fault, no responsibility. No responsibility... no refund or credit. I hope everyone at Rosebud had a good time. I'll try to get there next year Kevin Willunga, S.A. Quote
steve_hobart Posted March 7, 2010 Report Posted March 7, 2010 unbelievable.....bloody airlines couldnt care less about the customers..... Quote
DaveA Posted March 8, 2010 Report Posted March 8, 2010 Surely any half decent airline/ business would have refunded your money ! So VB’s planes sit on the ground knowing they won’t be flying anywhere, and yet they don’t have the decency to give your money back. How can they look you in the eye and say "sorry, no money back" This represents a huge profit for them. Quite frankly I’m staggered at this. Do not use budget airlines people, they will shaft you the second there is a complication. Quote
Two Hands Posted March 12, 2010 Author Report Posted March 12, 2010 Apparently my clients don't understand that I'm a professional kite flier And Kevin, mate that was some biblical weather we had, love to Linda for being the one who had to take you back, and so soon after thinking she'd get a few days with you out from under her feet. Bad all round I guess Thanks to both Pete's/Peter's for shaking their tail feathers down at Rosebud There are some very solid skills shaping up there, I think I might have even taken a 2nd if there were judges As for a kite fliers perspective: The field this year was a far better playground with a generous 20x50m space to demo in, now the wind could have been slightly more co-operative but it didn't destroy too many kites (and I would have loved to have a little run on the Ozone) but as we say at the 'pointy end' sacrifices have to be made sometimes! It was a pleasure to get a chance to catch up with Craig Hanson of Peter Lynn and to get a story or 2 from his Sahra crossing, yet another reason for fearing those Kiwi's, a totally mad bunch Thanks to Alison for pulling it all together in less that ideal weather for the W/E, a great day had by me for sure. I'm guilty of not even being able to get back to the vehical to get my camera out, but I'm hoping a few shots turn up from other sources Regards TH Quote
