  1. This is my second Fusion kite, my first being the 4.9 model which has already been reviewed by Binliner on this site. I have been looking for a low wind kite for a while and have been impressed by the rock steady handling of my 4.9, so when I saw the 7.5 at a seriously good price the decision was made. The kite was duly collected from my friendly kite shop, Up4Kiting of sunny Southend on Sea and comes complete with the superb Kinell rucksack which is beautifully designed and just looks so cool. I chose the red kite with yellow chevrons which comes neatly packaged in the multicoloured stuff sack also provided. I know that kite colour is not the most important consideration but, what the heck; it doesn't do any harm if it looks cool, does it! The whole package fits in the rucksack with room to spare. Flying lines are 25 metre pre stretched Dyneema rated at 450 lb; the brake lines being rated at 200lb. So to the first flight. With the help of my mate Dolph we took the new toy to our usual flying spot to set up. Upon unfolding the kite I now understand how Han Solo felt when he first saw the Death Star, this kite is BIG. Lines checked for equal length, connected to kite, then handles connected up, kite killers in place and ready to go. With regard to the handles I have to say that I like the feel and balance of them, they are solidly engineered and, personally, I find them comfortable to use. First launch was a bit sluggish so the kite was brought down and lines adjusted. Second launch in relatively low but steady wind conditions and WOW, what a difference. Once the outer cells are inflated the kite forms a "wall" quite quickly and becomes rock steady. This is one design feature that gives Fusions stability, the outer cells are 'closed' at the leading edge and inflate laterally from the open cells. This results in a very stable structure throughout the wind window. I agree with Binliner's view that the Fusion 4.9 seems to fly best with the brakes just tight enough to form, as he puts it, a small crease on the trailing edge. The same applies to the 7.5 or at least that's the way I've set it up and it seems to work well. So how does it handle? Power delivery is smooth and deliberate. It is obvious that there is a mass of power in this kite but I did not feel at any time that it would bite me without warning. That is not to say that I am not respectful of the potential of this kite, it will be interesting to see what it delivers in slightly higher wind conditions. Taken up to the zenith this kite pulls upwards somewhat but I'm not sure that it is really a "lifty" kite. However, bring it down the wind window and there is traction by the lorry load. I hope to start buggying shortly and this is, I suspect, going to prove a very useful engine for that purpose. Hopefully I can do a supplement to this review at a later date when I've done some buggying unless, of course, there are any readers out there who already use this kite for that purpose and would like to comment!. Overall I love this kite, it looks good, handles well with very steady and solid flying characteristics and is, I suspect, not likely to turn on me without good warning. The Fusion can be picked up at the moment for a good price if you hunt around and you won't be disappointed if you invest in one, but that's only my opinion and as you've guessed I'm pretty biased towards Kinell kites. 2. Ok where to begin, this is my first out and out race kite only having flown the razor. The razor is all I have to compare it to. When taken out of the bag staked it out and run back to grab the handles in only what must have a 10 mph I found I had no brakes. After some what sheepishly taking a full ten inches off the brake lines I try again. The power from this kite in light winds is considerable, so I ran to the beach and quickly gave it to my lightweight friend who was scudding all over the beach and buggied it. He liked what he called the directness of power through the window. Following day 20 mph winds off I go back to the field behind my favourite beach buggy and board in tow. Plant the kite at the zenith of the window sits in buggy and is promptly pulled out sideways. So I put the kite back to the zenith and was moving it across the top of the window in no more than 20 feet each side of the zenith. Remembering I'm 17 seventeen stone this kite was giving me ten foot air on each jump. A beautiful thing to look at bright red with a yellow half moon at the back edge another benefit the two end cells have Velcro on the tail edge for emptying sand and water(good idea if like me you end up face downing the sand some of the time). The handles are exceptionally solid no chance of losing your strop loop like some kites I could mention. This kite comes into its own when your on a straight run on the beach at low tide the pull is astounding after working the kite to get moving then sitting it in the window I was hitting speeds of 30mph. (thanks the sea for extra braking when required). Sliding is easy although you feel it wants to pull you forward out of your buggy. I haven't flown any other race kite except the razor but I expect if anyone is flying the Kinnell Katana in the super cup series that this kite is going to win a race or two. A beautiful piece of kit but and I must stress this most vehemently this is not a beginners kite, it is a race kite and should be respected as such. And I know I have left a strip of skin 9 inches long on the side of my buggy when in motion I tried to spin it round downwind. oops, I forgot the lines well the 3.5 comes with 300lbs on the control lines and 200 I think as the brakes. I wouldn't have bought this kite normally but after much consideration and talking and coffee with David at extreme zone sports I will not be looking back I love this kite and add it to growing kinnell kite bag. 3. Kinnell Fusion 4.9m Looking for that all important second kite, I wanted a bigger kite to get me going on the landboard when the wind is too weak for the 3m Fury, I came across this well respected kite at an excellent price from the Bridlington Kite Shack. I’ve flown this kite for 6 months now and feel it’s time for a review. First impressions: It’s becoming something of a kiting cliché but superb bag, well made and roomy. The kite was inside a drawstring bag within the main rucsac, handy for the parapackers amongst us. The actual kite seems to be top quality, stitched neatly and nicely finished. The handles are not in the Flexi/Ozone class but adequate; the lines a little flimsy, lengthwise the leader and brake lines were a bus ride apart, some knot fiddling and they were all equal and ready to go. First Flight. This is not the type of kite which will instantly leap up in the air at the first pull of the lines, it needs to be sat up for a few seconds to inflate. Once inflated it’s raring to go, a quick pull and it rises sedately into the air. As reported elsewhere, this kite likes to fly with a slight crease in the trailing edge. Only having a 3m Ozone Fury for comparison it seemed quite a bit slower through the air, more powerful but more controllable without the snatchiness of the Fury – although this may have been due to the amenable winds. In Use. Since the maiden flight, I’ve flew this kite in all sorts of conditions with only a couple of problems. The most serious being a terminal death spin when trying to land the kite in winds above 20mph, taking advice from members on the Racekites forum, I rechecked the line lengths – which were okay and began landing at the edge of the wind window in strong wind, which solved the problem. A more potentially serious fault occurred recently, one of the bridle leaders snapped at the knot, luckily on the leading edge bridle not the brake line, so I was at least able to land the kite without too much trouble. Since replacing the leaders with more substantial material I have had no more problems. On the landboard in a decent 15mph onshore wind it’s possible to hold the kite at any position in the window and cruise up and down the beach. Sine waving in lower winds can produce a surprising amount of speed. For a tyro boarder, the Kinnell’s lack of lift is helpful in minimising unexpected surprises. Conclusion Apart from the bridle fault, the Kinnell is a sturdy and stable kite which performs well in suitable wind conditions. Considering the bargain price I paid, I have no complaints and would certainly buy another Kinnell kite. I’ve since moved on to depower but still find this kite useful on days when the wind is not blowing enough to get going with the 13m Bomba which really needs wind in double figures to be comfortable. 4. I had been looking for a larger buggy engine as the winds had dropped in my area and my 3.6 beamer just wasnt pulling enough. Found an ex demo, flown "a few times" Fusion 4.9 on Airboss for 90 quid with rucksack, checked out a few reviews and then clicked the fatal "add to cart" button! Well 24 hours later it arrived. My first impression was of the rucksack, Now,I know, I know you, dont fly the bag and all that crap, but lets be honest here folks, what would you rather have, some crappy ripstop bag with the name of your kite printed badly across the side or a sexy rucksac that looks suspiciously like a stealth parachute pack for illicit base jumping adventures! Well I know which I would rather have.... Well ontop the kite, Once unpacked in the home inspection area otherwise known as the kitchen and discovered firstly that ,the fabric felt a little wierd, smooth and frictionless kind of... Well that would be the silicone coating then wouldnt it!! All the bridles were sewn and the neat little velcro strips in each corner for filling your kite with sand and rubbish appeared to work. as did the inbuilt tangle points for fixing your bridles to if your anal enough NOT to parapack (incidently who invented that cause they are great!) OK packed away again and wait for wind... First time out, couldnt wait... went down to the seafront in 3mph and it actually went up! Had to work it a bit but it did actually fly, then the wind dropped (iff thats possible at 3mph) and it fell out of the sky... Oh well... have to wait again... Not long ... Folowing day in fact... blew up to a healthy 15 - 20 mph Well what can I say, the kite sat there gently bobing up and down on its brake lines obviously dying to get into the air. Its at this point I should point out that unlike a lot of other kites there is no brakeline adjustment on this kite so I attached it to a set of handles I have with 4 knots on each leader. I wasnt sure if just attaching it straight would lead to no brakes, lots of brakes or any other bizarre combination. so I erred on the side of caution and gave it a little brake, attaching it to 25m lines with the brakes on the 2nd knot on my handle leaders. PERFECT.... The kite rose straight up the window without a flicker! AND THE PULL WAS AWESOME!!! It sat at the zenith with absolutely no overfly and barely pulled, almost no lift! Great!!! Im not gonna get yanked out of my buggy the first chance?mistake that hits!!! After a few figure 8s Into the buggy I got.... Dropped it into the power and OFF WE WENT! this kite is so forgiving its almost a samarittan! It doesnt luff, if you turn too sharlp and slacken off your lines soi it collapses it doesnt refill and take off at mach 3 taking your arms with it.... Its gentle but firm, treat it with respect and she is all yours, give it some abuse and she is still all yours!, Once the speed was dialled in with some s turns you could almost park the kite and just sail along in the buggy to your hearts content... My kinda riding! This is an amazing kite! I now want the 7.5 which I understand you can get for about £200 at the mo! Its ALL pull and NO lift... If you want lift for freestyle this is NOT the kite for you, if you want masses of pull and a forgiving kite for learning OR cruising (like old farts like me! Lift scares the bejesus outta me!!!) then this is the kite for you. If this kite had even a quarter of the lift of other kites this size I would not recommend it for a beginner but as it is all about pull and so forgiving I have listed it as a beginners kite. HOWEVER... WHEN I SAY THIS HAS BAGS OF PULL I MEAN ONSCENE AMOUNTS OF PULL.... RESPECT THE PULL FOLKS AND IT WILL RESPECT YOU!!! Intermediates that want to cruise at speed but want a forgiving kite.... here ya go... Beginners... here ya go... This is one kite I will NOT be getting rid of anytime soon..... I LOVE IT!!! 5. Well having been very pleased with my 3.5m Fusion I though I'd go one step further and get a 4.9 (seeing as my blade has been quite well used), I got a really good deal again because the kite was an ex demo model. My first impressions where much the same as before kite was well made lines seemed to be good quality etc. the problem with the printing has most definitely been solved so no worries there! I couldn't wait for my first fly so off I went to my local park and started unpacking the kite My first concern was the handles (I don't know for sure if these where the one originally supplied!) they where aluminium with the (thin) foam grips and the foam had quite obviously moved up the handle. I carried on anyway because I wanted to see how the kite had been set up, to give me a guide before I changed the handles. All I can say is I pity anybody that had tried the kite before I had it! It had no breaks at all so I had very little control. So a decision was made to fit new handles and try and sort the lines out. After a bit of trial and error I got it right (after removing about 6' or so from the brake lines!) and it seemed happiest with just enough tension in the brake lines to give a small crease in the trailing edge (much the same as my blade). The kite was every stable compared to the blade and could be spun on its own axis. I was also please to find again that the kite produces very little lift but loads of pull so no problem when using it in the buggy (might not suit all atb pilots though as some riders prefer a certain amount of lift) or on my dirtsurfer. It wasn't quite as fast through the window as my Blade I but the window seemed to be a bit bigger, although again you have to be careful towards the edge of the window as the nose of the kite has a tendency to curl over and collapse the kite (same as the 3.5). I haven't really tried it in that many different conditions but it does seem to require a bit more wind than Blade I to be useful (again I think this could be a weight issue as with the 3.5) but other that its wind range seems similar to my blade I. My brother would occasionally comes out to have a play was very comfortable with it and was a lot less intimidated buy this than the 4.9 Blade I that we where flying at the same time, so again if you relatively new to power kites and want something easy to fly this kite should definitely be on your shopping list! So I am pleased with my new toy and would recommend it to anyone who either (like me) is after something easy to fly that is very forgiving but can pack enough punch to still be fun when you want it to be or is a relative newbie and would like some thing easy to fly but that can be used when they move on to a buggy or board! Kinnell Fusion

This is my second kite (the first being a 3m Radsail) and thought I'd wait a few months to get a proper feel for it before writing a review. I bought this one off Ebay brand new for a bargain price from the makers. I'd never seen one let alone flown one but I'd read the reviews here and it seemed like a good kite. Two days later it comes! Smart rucksack, expandable so I can fit my pads in, loads of pockets for beer, I mean stake, kite killers etc. Really good quality..... I'm going to stop there, it is a just a bag after all. Now on to the kite. Top marks here as well. I know Rocky has already said this but this thing comes with a 1 year product and 2 year fabric warranty, I don't know of anyone else offering this with a kite. I guess with this sort of backup the materials, stitching and workmanship should be good and after the last few months of abuse in my hands everything is holding up very well. Chuffed to bits Anyway, checked the lines, 30m pre-streched all the same length, handles 2 of and so on. This kite flies superbly. I needed to tweak the brake lines on the first flight. This kite likes to fly with a small crease along the trialing edge. The main lines have stretched a little over the last 3 months so another tweak on the brake lines has been needed recently. The handles are a little hard on the hands after a long flight but I'm asking Santa for a harness this Xmas so that should cure that problem. These are the only things I can fault with the flying of the kite but remember thats the lines and handles NOT the kite. The Fusion is predictable, highly stable both inland when it's gusty and of course on the beach where the wind is more stable. I now use this kite as a buggy engine and it pulls like a train. Not as fast or as powerfull perhaps as a Blade but this cost me less and doesn't lift either, just what I wanted. This is purely a traction kite. Occasionaly it folds a little when I get it too close to the edge of the window but a tug on the handles soon sorts that out. It says in the manual that the Fusion will fly in winds of 5mph plus. This sounds about right. I don't have a wind meter only trees to try to judge the wind speed and I start to chicken out at around 15mph plus but partly because I have trouble holding on to the handles. There are two velcro openings on the end of the trialing edges to clear out sand, water etc. Useful if you can get the sand and stuff to the corners otherwise a waste of time (perhaps I'm doing something wrong). The printing of the word Fusion on the kite is starting to come off a little but rest of the design isn't I found that a bit odd. I got a real bargain when I bought this. The instructions that came with it were clear and detailed. Overall I've been very happy with this kite. Good quality, good beginner kite. Good value for money. Good stable and fun kite. 7. I'd been a good boy (for a while) and worked hard to earn some extra pennies so my wife granted me my wish of changing our high wind kite from a 2.5 X-Trac to the unbelievably priced 2.5 Fusion from Kinell Kites. I got a great deal on the Fusion with a package that included kite, lines and handles in a stuff sack, the obligatory manual which is very usefull and informative for a change and a Kinell Kites expandable rucksack that is in my opinion the Rolls Royce of kiting rucksacks! you can keep the wierd big zip bags from HQ (Sorry Jerry). They really have thought about the needs of the kite flier when they designed this rucksack. I even got a free kite surf video thrown in for good measure. Off to the local field we go to set the kite up and on unwrapping the kite the first thing that struck me was the build quality. The upper sail is made from Gelvenor silicon coated nylon (according to the manual) and is used for paragliders due to it's longevity and resistance to U.V and dirt. Kinell have put a two year fabric warranty on the kite and a one year full product warranty which is unheard of with other kite manufacturers I believe. Overall the build quality is superb throughout with velcro pockets at the wing tips to clear any sand (or leaves/grass) from the cells and a stitched bridle system which is reinforced and a reinforced trailing edge. 10 out of 10 for build quality. I did have a few problems setting the lines up but this was just a minor teething problem (more to do with me rather than the lines themselves) but some may find this very frustrating especially when every other detail has been so well thought out. The handles are okay and do the job well but do feel a bit hard after a while. Once the kite was set up correctly, I launched it straight up into the middle of the wind window as the wind wasn't that strong. the Fusion is much lighter than the X-Trac and a lot faster with good consistant pull and it responded well to the lightest touch which made it very maneuverable. It can fly closer to the edge of the window than the X-Trac without losing it's shape and folding due to it's partially closed cells. This also means it can handle gusty and turbulent air with ease making it and excellent learner kite. I brought this primarly as a high wind kite and to help learn to buggy with in conditions that are unsuitable for my 4.5 Pepper at the moment, but my mate used it with a board and was very impressed seeing as it's a small kite with a good amount of pull. Jumping would not be possible as it's designed more for tractive power and speed rather than lift. I believe that I got a real bargain with this kite as the original list price was just under £230 but I got all this in a sale, brand spanking new, for just £100! Value for money? I think so. I can see this becoming a very reliable and user friendly addition to the small collection of kites we now own and on the several occassions that we have been flying since purchasing, it has often been the first kite out of the bag. By : Rocky
  8. My first four line traction kite was a 3.6 Beamer. Having flown this for around eight months and bought other larger kites, I though I would sell it and replace it with a better quality kite. (although for the money Beamers are great kites to learn with). After much deliberation and searching the internet and e-bay I bought myself a very slightly used 3.5 Kinell Fusion. I had read as much as I could about it and decided it fitted the bill, as I wanted something that was well made and stable in flight, as I mainly fly inland, and when your flying in 15-25mph winds inland it tends to get a little gusty. So would the Fusion fit the bill? First time out was overcast and blowing a nice steady breeze.(proberbly about 15mph). I got the lines laid out, as they were not attached to the kite, and proceeded to take the kite out of it's stuff sack and connect to the lines. Just as I did this, the wind picked up alot, and it started chucking it down with rain. And my mates 4m Radpro decided to self launch! I eventually got the lines connected and was about to put the kite away again when the sun started to appear, so I thought i'd give it a quick blast. On the ground it looked like there was no brake been held, so a quick adjust and up she went, nice and smooth, to sit at the zenith no problem. The wind was proberbly around the 20mph mark, and the kite was rock solid, with a nice shape in the air. Even when the kite flew behind me, it never luffed, and could easily be bought back to the zenith. So, top marks in the stability stakes. Working the kite around gave good traction, and even in the gusty conditions was lovely and smooth. What surprised me most was the lift that this kite has. Everywhere you look you will see articles saying that the Fusion's don't have any lift. Rubbish! Yes, it's easy to have a rest at the zenith, but your arms are at head height, and this small kite lifted my ample frame a few times. It's definately is a step up from the beamer. However, as the wind dropped a little, the kite was past onto a complete beginner.(Although he has done paragliding before, so that proberbly helped!) After a quick pep talk, up she went again nice and smooth. A bit of working, left and right at the zenith and Ben soon had the hang of it. I think he only crashed once, and that was hardly a crash, and the kite never luffed once all afternoon. The wind was very changable, from a min 5mph to gusts of nearly 30mph. This kite just stuck in the sky and didn't want to come back down. So, in conclusion. One very well made kite, with plenty of reinforcing. Nice, qulity line set. Only let down by the handles. (Not enough padding for my liking) A superb back pack. (The kite then has it's own stuff sack). This is by far the best kite back pack I have seen. I don't use them personally, as I now have four kites which I carry in an Advance offroad bag, but I shall be using this to carry spare clothes, food and drink etc. down to the beach. And one very nice kite. Superb stabillity, that makes it ideal for beginners in lower winds, and nice speed and lift(for a small kite) for the more intermediate flyer. Definately a good replacement for the Beamer. I'm sure this will serve me well in my ongoing quest to master landboarding, but would be just as good in a buggy. Yes they are pricey, but if you shop around you can get some good deals (try www.marionvillemodels.com). Then again I only paid £93 off e-bay for mine so I'm well chuffed, and so's the wife as that's only a bit more than I got for the Beamer. By : andrewjohn
  9. I wanted to add something to my kite bag to use when my bade I 4.9 got too much. So after looking around on the internet for a while I went to Middle Wallop in May armed with some cash. To be honest I bought the Fusion by default rather than looking for it, after spotting it in the Highwaymen's stand on offer as an ex demo. So here starts my first Kinell Experience. Having only had Flexifoil and Peter Lynn stuff before I was relieved to find that the kite came in its own stuff sack inside the rucksack (I don't believe that zip's, lines and rip stop are a good mix!) the rucksack has more compartments than you can shake a stick at so no worries about carry spare lines, stake's etc. The kite its self is very well constructed and has the little Velcro tabs to hold the bridle down and stop it getting tangled when packing and unpacking. There are vents on the trailing edge at each end sealed with Velcro to allow you to drain water and sand out if you take the kite to the beach and the trailing edge is finished with a webbing reinforcement. The bridle is very well constructed and is attached to the kite by webbing on the trailing edge and the rest are stitched into the kite itself. My only concern so far was cosmetic as the printing on the kite seamed to have almost disappeared, but having spoken to Kinell this is due to the type of rip stop that they use. It is very UV resistant and also water resistant, the down side is that it's very difficult for them to print on but I believe they have now found a way! Now for the fun bit, having got the kite out I was ready for my first fly. I was a bit concerned at first because the kite had been set up already and it looked like the brake lines where a bit long but once the kite was but I was surprised to find they where ok. It was very smooth and will turn in its own axis, I haven't tried anything else to compare it to yet, but it is a lot less fussy than my blades about the sort of conditions it is flown in and soaks up all but the worst of the dirty air that you encounter flying inland. The trade off seem to be that it's not as quick through the air as say a blade and sometimes you can find that when using it in a buggy you are accelerating faster than the kite, this doesn't bother me because I'm more of a relaxed buggyier than a racer so I'm rarely going fast enough for it to bother me! There is very little lift so if jumping is you thing forget this kite. Again it suits me because one of the thing's I dislike about my blades is that it will yank you straight up and out of the buggy if you're not on the ball. Lots of power though for traction stuff i.e. buggying or boarding (although again no good if air is your thing!) and very controllable. The only other problem that I have encountered is when flying near the edge of the window the leading edge has a tendency to curl over and in doing so it closes up the vents at the front and the kite becomes very unstable and either ends up going through its own bridle which requires some interesting landing skills if it powers up before reaching the ground or it just collapses and drops out of the sky again it's not a big problem but can be frustrating if you're buggying or boarding. All in all a good general purpose kite that is very well made and is ideal for beginner or intermidate kite flyer or someone like me who just wants something that isn't to taxing to fly but is still fun to use in a buggy or on a board. 10. This kite comes in a fancy and next to the frenzy, the best looking backpack of them all. On taking the kite out of the bag first thing you notice is the similarity in design to the ozone little devil and that is where the similarity ends. Lifting it through the wind window to the zenith in a 15 mph wind tells you that this kite is a pleasure to fly. The handles are solid as you would expect from a paraglider company, giving it a constant and easy flight through the window. Using this kite in in 20 mph in a buggy is a joy the 3.5 comes in 2 shades of blue and hardly any lift is produced so your seat in your buggy is guaranteed. However the lateral pull is astonishing for this kind of kite. Its not a racekite far from it but it is perfect for recreational flying the lines are a little long and certainly need adjusting to pilots own needs. Its not cheap but the build quality is only matched in my opinion by Ozone, PKD and LIBRE. All the stitching is internal and like ozone the the edges are protected all in all this kite produces a excellent flight. The one thing that did concern me with it first i like to fly on short lines of 20m i like the immediacy of short lines and it comes with 30m. Overal this is a well rounded kite suitably for pilots of all experience the cost may prohibit some but the fusion is worth every penny you spend. By : Ted Hedonist
