Pity, that's the best time here in Melbourne. I'm looking to go away somewhere around August - kid friendly, with yoga for my Ms without having to spend a fortune. May have to go up to FNQ.

Has anyone tried using Paulownia planks? Been trawling the web for some info about making a lightwind board, probably an Alaia, and these guys seem to be selling planks for kiteboards as well http://www.portphillip.com.au/surfboards.htm it's light weight and doesn't absorb water.

Nice vid and some nice waves! Not sure how good the kiting would have been in front of the eifel tower but it certainly would have been a good lough.

I had 2 Rip Curl and both died on me after a while. On one of the Rip Curl I had the arrows falling off after a decent downhill run in my bike in the Swiss Alps, no issues with the G-Shok last time I went. I've been using a Casio G-Shock Giez for tha past 4 years for everithing I do, Mountain Biking, Kiting, Work etc and the thing just keeps going - and it's precise! They're pretty tough and you never need to adjust the Giez. It does it by itself. It would be nice the have the tides on there but I just look it up once a week and thats usually enough to have a fair idea when it's high or low. You can get the Casio's fairly cheap on fleebay.

Awesome!! I'll be doing this in a few years. Hey Norm, there is only one problem with teaching your kids. Give them one to two seasons and they will be doing massive handlepasses and you may have to go for some lessons to your son!

It would be worth talking to the guy from KSS. I don't see why this wouldn't be in his best interst. Pamphlet's could be a simple way. A large sign at the beach, but that would involve the council. KBV, try it, I'm not getting any responses from them. Update the KBV website with better kite location info. KBV to send out regular newsletters with that sort of info included, i.e. hazards, accidents. ...or de we need to create an altona kitesurf club to push that through ->transform MAKO.

There is no reason the believe the guys was a newbie and I don't know, I didn't pay any attention. Fingers crossed for him! However, there are masses of newbies in Altona and Altona is not as save as it may seems. There is not much room for things to go wrong. One of the issues is also the fact that every website (incl. KBV) describes Altona as suitable beginners and schools keep telling their students to practice in Altona. But what are the options, I know one school in St. Kilda that churns out over 1000 kiters a season!!! Some may be tourists but a lot of them would be from around melbourne and they need to practice somewehre. But Altona is not the best place to practice.

I think it was wednesday last week (too much kiting, it's all a blur). Don't know what happened. I launched off the main beach in Altona and stayed towards apex park mainly in the flat water area, the wind was ok not too gusty and on the lighter side. There were not many kiters out. A few were doing laps from the pier to the flat water just after the groin and back again. Didnt pay too much attention what they were doing or what skill level they had. Next thing was I Cab in a tree on the corner of Webb Street and a couple fo people were already there. I had a chat to some of the kiters that helped him and thay mentioned something went wrong and he ended up on the side of the road not able to move his legs. Beginner or not, it doesn't matter, lets hope the dude is fine and back on the water again.

Just wondering if anyone knows if that guy is ok who got dragged over the wall and onto the road in Altona last week. I heard he wasn’t able to move his legs anymore and got taken away by an ambo. Does anyone know if he’s fine?

^^^ it just goes to show that people want quality and it turns out to be cheaper in the long run anyway if you consider the lifespan of a good quality kite, resell value, and less faults. OR maybe you guys are just good at selling BTW whats the most sold kite in your area anyway?

Hi Joel, Thanks, that just confirmed my assumption that they are cheap. I saw ads here and there but never seen any of the kites and it appears that some fora delete any posts that discuss these kites and therefore was also wondering if there is more to it. But it looks like just another brand trying to have a slice of the cake while having a steep learning curve in regards to R&D. I am currently not looking at buying new kites, I try to stick to the bigger brands simply because of the reasons mentioned.

Just out of curiosity dos anyone know anything about Switch kites. They appear to be fairly cheap – price wise. Just wondering if it is a case of “you get what you pay for”. I have also noticed that each time someone posts anything about Switch kites on SB the tread gets deleted. I wonder if it’s possible to discuss it here.

Maybe not such a good idea after all. The island is a marine reserve and it looks like there are massive currents on tidal changes. Nature reserves and sanctuaries should stay off limits for us kiter and other hoons. http://www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/Kite ... o-survive/ TGF

Awesome Is there enough room for gear on the boat and how much time would you have to kite? The northerleis seem to be a bit stronger there as well. Could also be a good downwinder to rye- if you take the boat from rye otherwise it would be a bit of a logistical pain.

Good effort plummet! Hope you got a case of brew for that. Lesson to take away: "never fly further out than you want or can swim back" and I guess this should be rule No.1. Things can and do go wrong, being 1k out without a floating device can get tricky if the sh!t hits the fan. I’m sure next time he won’t be jumping that far out.

Yea mate. Consider this, the difference between Cairns and Cooktown is already a few knots and it is completely different to SE Queensland. While the north gets trade winds blowing 24/7, SE Queensland gets a few nice sunny days with the occasional kitable wind. Now look at Cocos, it's closer to Sumatra and nearly halfway to Sri Lanka from WA. Cocos gets Trade similar to what FNQ does but in winter WA gets frontal winds that blow through. So we're looking at complete different conditions simply becaus of the different geographical locations. Therefore, having a look at a wind rose from Cocos Island can't give you any indication about the wind average in any part of WA.

Cheers for the comments Been out now a few times - when there was wind - and taping the ankle seems to be working ok so far. Landings can be a bit painful though but I'll be taking it easy for the next few months. Decided to stick to my usual board with straps and won't try any new moves in ankledeep water for a while. As suggested a strapless surfboard would probably be the best option to prevent any injury until it's all back to normal.
