Yeah, The Sweet Swede (jazzp) and I headed down and met up with "Brazen" for a sunset session. Winds were light but good. A little fickle but on the whole pretty good really.
I decided to break out my 5m Panch Sprint at first, but it didn't take long for me to think better of that decision and elected for a 4m Beamer instead. 'Brazen' couldn't hang round for long and 'jazzp' was having some 'speed wobble' issues with his land board so I took the 4m Beamer on a 'mouth run' on my lonesum, which was fine, but would have been better with company (and would have been better with something that wasn't a Beamer ).
Clive, the soft sand really is a no-goer I'm afraid, at lease on barrows it isn't. The line you have to take basically follows the waterline the whole way. Sometimes, down near the mouth itself, people set up surf fishing so you have to vear 'inland' to get around there rods and lines. If their rods are set up all the way back in the soft sand, once you've passed you have to get out and hump your buggy back to the waters edge to continue on but it's not too hard (assuming you can control your kite with one hand and drag your buggy with the other). If you're not so adept at one hand flying (or your buggy weighs say 100kg or so ) than you may need to land your kite, stake the handles, drag your bug then go back and pick up your kite again. Down by the mouth even wet sand right on the waters edge can be surprisingly soft but I've always been able to make it through - though it's easy to get swamped by the occasional wave if your not being attentive . If you'd like to see the exact line you'll find a KML trace of one of the runs we did on the firs page, but basically it just follows the waters edge right the way down.
There are plenty of 4x4s on the beach these days as the fishing (and cockles) are pretty good but there not too much of a problem. As much as people seem to like to bitch about others I find as a general rule most people are in fact fairly accommodating and the 4x4 drivers are no exception (other than those mongrels who stole my PL bug last weekend ). The 4x4 drivers are usually fairly courteous and if anything are somewhat intrigued by us buggyers and they usually slow down as they pass and generally keep an eye out. Even though there can be a lot of then down there on the weekends there really not a problem.
