Anne1599968726 Posted April 28, 2008 Report Posted April 28, 2008 Since vehicle fuel is never far from the headlines, people are always complaining about the price of it or panicking about shortages (which is what creates them!) I was just wondering ..... on your most recent fill-up, how much did you put in your tank, and what did it cost? I filled up mrb's van's gas tank at the weekend - managed to squeeze 43 litres in before the valve started making noises, and it cost about £24 Quote

Sand-Yeti Posted April 28, 2008 Report Posted April 28, 2008 You guys are going to kill me. The cheapest petrol that I buy to run my 4 X 4's on is Dhs 5.65 per Imp. gallon. Pound / exchange rate today Dhs means 77.4 p per Imp. Gall. or 17p a litre. My Landcruiser has double tanks totalling 180 litres, which means It costs me just under GBP 31.- to fill up both tanks. I have a 4 L Jeep Wrangler as well and to fill the tank on that costs me less tha GBP 10.- Quote
foz.foz Posted April 28, 2008 Report Posted April 28, 2008 @ Yeti.... thought about the import business to the uk ?? Quote

The Geoff Posted April 28, 2008 Report Posted April 28, 2008 These guys are very good: http://www.petroldirect.com/ 60p/litre. I love Clarkson's take on it: Petrol: Make oil rig, tow it into the North Sea, man it, drill, eventually find oil, build a pipe, pump oil to mainland, refine it, send it to petrol stations. Mineral water: Take water, put in bottles, send to shops. And mineral water is more expensive than petrol. Bargain I reckon. Quote
wenglish Posted April 28, 2008 Report Posted April 28, 2008 it cost me £3 quid to fill up the other day, the price of rubber hoze and large flat head screw drivers have gone up considerably. Quote

In fact it isn't taxed at all. The serious revenues are made from oil exports 2) We sit on oil here and selling costs are just marginally higher than production costs. UK also sucks oil from North sea but does not give its citizens preferential pricing. In fact the opposite is true. Fuel prices from your oil producing nation are higher than those of non producing nations. e.g. Switzerland has cheaper petrol. 3) Revenues here are generated by world prices. The prices simply vary by the basic rule of supply & demand. OPEC control a large quantity of what is produced. If they open their taps a bit more then the price goes down & vice versa. The non OPEC nations obviously compete with OPEC and that's why their prices don't swing too much from the leading oil producers. Couple of other issues like countires that can have produce lots of oil like Iran & Iraq have political; issues to overcome to start flooding the market place with their oil, which will bring down prices. Finally, you will find that Arab oil producing countries like here in the UAE has its currency pegged to the US dollar. As you know, the value of the dollar against other major currencies has been sliding almost as fast as the price of a barrel of crude has been rising. As our dollar pegged currencies in the Gulf (call them Petro-dollars) have dropped considerably that has caused our foreign imports to become horribly expensive. If I visit Europe with my Dirhams, I get a miserable exchange rate now. There has been talk for quite some time now to revalue the Gulf State currencies more in line with the Euro or somewhere between the dollar & Euro. That might happen when the USA have elected a new President & we see which way their economy is blowing. Bush & cronies have made a right mess of the US economy along with other things like stupid wars etc. If nothing is done to halt this mad inflation, I see the price of a barrel of crude going to $US200.- and then your petrol will be even more expensive unless the UK eases off on their inflated fuel taxes & does something to support its citizens.
