I've been offered a 7.8m Oxigen U-Turn for just over GBP200.-

The Oxigen splurge describes it as an intermediate kite that leans towards the racing kite.

I need some opinions about its use for buggying .

1) Do people use it mainly on a bar or handles?

2) Is this a kite that needs to be worked to keep flying?

3) Can it be easily parked in the neutral zone or do I need to touch brakes etc. to stop it over-flying?

4) Does it produce much lift?

5) What is the best wind range?

6) It's a big kite & probably turns slowly . How slow does it turn say compared to an 8.5m IV Blade?

7) what are its pros?

8) What are its cons?

Anything else I need to know, such as, is the price about right for a 2nd hand kite that has had only 1 hour of static flying time?

Posted

Price sounds good.....if its ready to fly....!!!!!!!

Handles...

does need use of brakes...but does not overfly

Not as much lift as a blade

Not flown one that big...

Very well built kites....

Find mine a bit difficult to get off the ground...but once up fly very easy...it is not a race kite...

Dave, I have the Oxy Pro.

1) Do people use it mainly on a bar or handles? Handles

2) Is this a kite that needs to be worked to keep flying? Park and Ride.. unless it's below 8 mp/h.

3) Can it be easily parked in the neutral zone or do I need to touch brakes etc. to stop it over-flying? Little bit of brake helps

4) Does it produce much lift? Not normally,, but as with all kites,, get a gust and it will lift you out.

5) What is the best wind range? For me.. 8 to 15 Mp/h

6) It's a big kite & probably turns slowly . How slow does it turn say compared to an 8.5m IV Blade?,, Probably about the same,, only comparrison I have is with 8.5m III.

7) what are its pros? Stable, not as much lift as Blade, you can work them in light wind from 5 mph, well made, good qaulity.

8) What are its cons? small wind range, vas with a lot of the big kites, for me I will change to a smaller kite if it picks up to much,,

Hope that helps..

They have a funny launching characteristic, but once you get used to them they are good buggy engines.

Will beat a bullet and its rivals hands down, but not a racing kite.

Excellent kites, well built and if you get the pro version they are less prone to water lag.

You wont be dissappointed.

Don't think water's too much of an issue in the desert?:D I love my oxigens, not got a 7.8 tho, with that size you should be able to "lock and load" not needing much input once it's moving. Size for size they're slightly slower through the air than pre-mkIV blades, but have a little more pull, so more buggy speed. They have some lift but not as much as blade and lots more predictable.

Most people use them on handles but they can easily be rigged for depower on a bar which works well if you are into that sort of thing.

How the brakes are set can alter the characteristics quite a bit - you probably have the experience to let them mostly off and keep the kite lively - it's rare that I find I need to hold big kites back on the brakes like I might with smaller kites.

It's been a while since I have flown a 7.8m Oxi, and it was probably on a bar, and it's been a really long time since I've flown an 8.5m blade, I'm pretty sure the oxigen will out turn it though.

I know what your agenda is though - will it be lifty enough to drag me up those big old dunes - yes, but you might have to work it a little more than a blade. It's difficult to say not having big dunes to climb over in the UK (and where we do have them we should stay off them as they are important coastal defences and very vulnerable to erosion).

They aren't race kites but they are what Stumcgoo started the season on, he now mainly has raptor II's but the Oxigens played a big part in getting him into 2nd place in the Scottish Series - I'm sure they are faster than blades, although in the case of race results the pilot makes a big difference and not many good guys are left flying blades....

Bottom line, see how much they sell for here, it might be worth a punt and if you don't like it, you know where to advertise it, even though shipping might be more than people normally expect :D

Did you buy it ?????

Not yet because I have to convince the Mrs. that kite No. 15 is absolutely necessary to avoid complete mental breakdown, withdrawal symptoms & to enhance marital harmony etc. etc.

If you are married Mr. Big, then I'm sure you'll understand

You must have a plan...

New kite = new shoes????

Just hide it for a while, like the rest of us,, then when they say,, "not seen that one before"

"oh had it for ages,, just don't get it out much" and move off quick.....

15? I have 22 race kites, no 24 (want to buy some RMs?) I think there are another 5 or 6 surf kites kicking about here some place, yes it is 6. Nope, not married!

Ah! the glory & simplicity of un-married bliss.

I like the RM's but not all that suitable for use in the dunes I'm afraid.

If I was just a flat land buggier, I'd probably take you up on your offer.

Hi Dave

This is my first post on FlexiForum so cut me some slack!!

I bought a second hand Oxi 7.8 Standard (although it was coloured both sides?) not that long ago, and I love it. I paid £150 but it wasnt RTF. Reckon c£200 is a fair price.

Its not a racing kite, although a higher aspect than the Helium. I use mine on a flexi bar more from choice, but also because it doesnt need to be worked as much as a Blade. As others have said, launching does take a bit of getting used to, its a knack, but once up it'll stay exactly where you park it. Brilliant upwind, and best performance around 12-15mph. Mine has never overflown.

Setting up on handles will make the turning quicker, but its a cruising engine for me so long beaches are the order of the day!

It copes with inland gusts really well too, although putting it up in gustier conditions than those mentioned above will cause you problems.

I would recommend any of U-Turn's kites - they're fabulously made, good value and look great too! :)

Thanks for your input Free Lander.

Glad to see your first post here and look forward to seeing some more.

I'm interested where you buggy around Plymouth area.

I haven't bought the Oxigen yet but have started a discussion with the local buggiers here in the UAE.

Probably one of us will buy it then every one will give it a whirl.

We dont have a whole lot of decent areas in Plymouth itself to board or buggy, but most of the club tend to meet at a local playing field (about 8 pitch size) which is inland and on top of a hill. Tends to be gusty which is a shame as its only a mile from where I live!

Alternatively, we have a few nice beaches with only moderate restrictions within a reasonable drive - Bantham, Whitsands, Gwithian and Westward Ho!

Having seen your signature and now realising where you are, dont think my bar option was relevant. You'll need handles as I guess you'll need to be moving the kite up and down the dunes??

Sounds like real fun - let us know how you get on with the kite-share.
