I know - i am using this method right now. I completely agree however after a few missed lessons at boy scouts i am having less faith in my knots.

Coupled with the fact i saw 1 dude with these velcro ones that strap onto your handles, i wanted to get some of these.......

I have the exact same hapness line in the PKS link.

Used it for one session and then wanted to burn it! It is far too stiff for my liking.

Some good 6mm rope should do the trick.

b&Q blue rope with red spots, 50p a metre, less than 25p a strop. bargain. who cares if it snaps

Errr...

I care, as would a lot of other people...

The idea is to take load from your arms, not shock load them when it snaps...

Here is my home made strop, it has a piece of cordlette attached to the handles "pigtails" using a larks head, and then thorugh the loop on the end of the climbing rope it is attached in a larks head style using a shortened tent peg - this creates a quick release on both ends of the strop. It also uses, climbing harness, screwgate and pulley. The quick release system was very important to me, it works easily and reliably.

Strop - general concensus seems to be climbing rope 5-8mm diameter... about £1-2 / metre (enough for 2-3 strops) burn and knot each end of the strop then attach to the pigtails so that the knot will TIGHTEN onto the pigtail under load.....

As for length - I was told that twice the handle length is optimal for a beginner and on Flexi handles this rule of thumb works well....

Check full lock of the strop against your arm's reach... by all counts if you're like Spar... then longer arms reach further so you could get away with a longer strop... then again if you're a midget shorter would be better....

usually if it is longer and you accidentally let go of one handle you won't be able to reach it to get hold of it again. :D and of course if you're just slipping it onto a spreader bar then there is more likelyhood it will keep falling off

Usually if it's shorter there is not enough movement to get the kite to turn quick enough ;)

After "some time" depending on use...

The rope will stretch even though it is pre stretched so it will need adjustment

The strop can be shortened as experience grows and brake turns are easier

I think mine are about 2 - 3 inches shorter than twice flexi handle length ATM and that seems to be ideal for what I want to do

hope this helps

richie- what i meant about who cares if it snaps is that all strops one day will snap regardless and if uve spent only 25p who cares cause it aint cost u an arm and a leg and wont be expensive to replace. of cause u dont want to keep spending money on strops if they break in the first 5mind of use but the rope from B&Q last a good length of time even when using a hammerhead spreader

not being picky, but you probably want to check your kit before you fly. If it looks like your "strop" is fraying or any other piece of your kit for that matter looks damaged, get it replaced before it does snap. May save ya a trip down A & E.

just use 5-6mm climbing rope (or good rope form chandlers) then put a single voerhand knot in either end of the strop then do an overhand knot around the pigtail on the handles make sure the initial knot is tight against the 2nd knot and its all nice n tight. works fine for me and ive been using that setup for about 3yrs now and never had a single problem with it, personnaly i have my strops covered in some plastic tubing though to stop it jamming in my block and protects the rope its self even more

^^^^I DO THIS TOO^^^^^^works very well providing the second knot is tight as stated AND set to tighten under load :D ;) and I dont have the plastic thingy over the strop either....

Buy some 6mm cord and make your own strops using this knot.... tied to the pig tails of your power lines.

Melt the ends to stop it freying, with practise this knot won't fail!

A very secure know called a clove hitch. will do the job perfectly
