andrewlcblueyo Posted July 24, 2006 Report Posted July 24, 2006 Right I am on here because if I do this on the landboarding forum everyone is biased! What I want (if it exists) is a good low wind kite: Range 7-15mph My weight 63.5kg Uses: kitesurfing and landboarding Any suggestions (apart from go home and wait until the wind is better)?? Quote
Johndango Posted July 24, 2006 Report Posted July 24, 2006 for land I would say blade 8.5m - well it is a flexi forum for water - its a difficult one as at those wind speeds i find board size is more of an issue. I kite a lot in Thailand where the average wind speed is between 8 and 15 knots (warm wind). I was using a naish torch 18m as a 1 kite quiver starting at 7 knots. But I found anything over 15 knots and I was getting over powered. (I am 65kgs). But that was on a big board. On a 128 nobile 555 I was needing about 10 knots to get going... so really a 16m + lei and a large board. But thinking the smaller lei / bow and a skimboard would be more fun. Dunno on foils for water. Although I did see a bloke on a 26m fs psycho 2 get going in 6 knots with an old directional, but to be honest it looked like the least fun you could have kitesurfing! Here recently on the south Devon coast I dream of 10+ knots! Quote
Pike Posted July 24, 2006 Report Posted July 24, 2006 waroo 16m - get's me going sub 10mph (8-10) and can use up to 20 mph but then I am 95kg's. Quote
hankster Posted July 24, 2006 Report Posted July 24, 2006 you need a flysurfer say a 13m speed.or for your weight maybe a 10m then you can use it in the autumn and winter, there's loads of 'em up for sale as the psycho 3 is out shortly plus ppl are using the pulse. Quote
gillstah Posted July 25, 2006 Report Posted July 25, 2006 best option: flysurfers and larger hybrid/bows. having said that i was out last night in light wind on a 12m hybrid and a lost cause exile. upwind in 13mph, and i'm 88kgs. imo avoid the bigger c-shapes (17m+) even though they are cheap as they are simply too heavy and slow and fall out of the sky in lighter winds (sub 10mph). someone your weight should be fine with a fast and light (ie modern, 2005 onwards) 15 or 16m c-shape in 11mph+ and the right board. larger peter lynns are also a big gutless imo. hankster Posted July 29, 2006 Report Posted July 29, 2006 if you want a low wind foil kite for landboarding look no furter than a bego 600 more powerful than a 6.6m blade imo and the power comes on smoothly unlike a blade what can be snatchy especially in gusts.you'll get as much or more power traction wise, and just as high jummps they're not as lifty static wise but as lifty worked.in fact there's one for sale in the sale section right now for £200.00 rtf if it hasn't power rings put them on i fly mine with pulleys. whiteside_josh Posted July 29, 2006 Report Posted July 29, 2006 the new 16m contra ! low wind moster of a kite. probs getya goin in like 5mph haha! costs a bomb tho.... Quote
BeachBeat Posted July 29, 2006 Report Posted July 29, 2006 larger peter lynns are also a big gutless imo. Absolutely agree. Just sold my 17m Bomba for that reason. Going to get a 12m bow instead. Quote
kiteingcolin Posted July 29, 2006 Report Posted July 29, 2006 the new contra bow, i used the 17 mtr today after the wind died, i was on my 9 mtr ion, anyways the contra was superb the wind started to build and as the windsurfers started to wizz around on 6 mtr sails i started to worry as the contra had not been out in a blow, only sub 10 mph, as the wind held steady at 22 mph i was in heaven, never believed i could be happy using it in a stiff wind, i was so happy i phoned mark at whitstable windsurfing and chopped in my 15 mtr ion for a 14 mtr contra bow, and if that is as good then the 12 mtr ion will be next to be part ex'ed, so smooth, and the float is unreal, jumping is technical mind, but is every bit as good as the ion when you get it sorted, and the float is twice as good, for your weight the 17 might be a bit much, try a 12 or 14, i will have mine on tues morning so will be able to give feedback asap, Quote
superhondaman Posted July 29, 2006 Report Posted July 29, 2006 10mt Psycho 2 + 128 FLX gets me going in 12-15mph when its lighter i switch to a 150 x 40 twin tip . One kite 2 boards, something like a flydoor would easily go in sub 10mph. i am 75kg Quote
mac007 Posted July 30, 2006 Report Posted July 30, 2006 larger peter lynns are also a big gutless imo. i wouldnt say they are gutless. my 18m g2 has a shed load of guts but they are in no way a low wind kite. u need at least 10mph to get flying well. Quote
intomountains Posted July 31, 2006 Report Posted July 31, 2006 Very often when everyone else has given up due to low wind someone turns up with an 8.5m+ blade and starts bombing around the beach. Couple of weekends ago a bloke at Camber jumped into the water with a Blade, sheet of plywood, shorts and a cricket cap and started bombing around. Meanwhile almost everyone else was sinking with their state of the art equipment attached. Quote
doc Posted July 31, 2006 Report Posted July 31, 2006 mountain man, u knows if u buy a peter lynn and break a spar, u can use bamboo. U can even grow ur own u knows - that's gotta be worth knowin. Quote
