It probably isn't a good idea to fly a kite in an electric storm.

We don't get them that often here (probably one every 3 years).

Does anyone fly kites in electric storms in the UK?

What are the risks? Surely the dyneema line wouldn't transmit the thousands of volts associated with lightning after all it is like insulation material although lightning would pass through it more easily than air.

 

I saw old sketches of Michael Faraday trying to catch ligtning in a bottle by flying a kite. I think he used a bunch of keys at the end of the line. I believe many scientific explorers were electrocuted trying to catch lightning.

 

Personally, I avoid electric storms having had some hairy experiences in the mountains back home in Switzerland.
