Looking to get my other-half her own kite, she's had a little play with my Bullet 2.5 but she was very nervous about bringing down from Zenith (was blowin around 20mph tho..lol). Anyways i want her to enjoy the sport, not get dragged off down the beach & scared to death so was wondering which would be the best choice to start off on, got these 2 in mind

RAGE 1.8

STING 2.4

which do you think would be best for 'cutting her teeth' on with a veiw to boarding in the future.??

Get her a kite which has depower and get her to use a harness a.s.a.p.

I taught my wife with a 4m depowerable kite and harness straight away. Because of this she didn't need strength but could concentrate on steering the kite.

Hey...I started with a 2 metre blade...because at the time the partner I was with liked seeing me fly across beaches going oocchhh!!!!!!! Do not get her a 2 metre Blade.........;)

I always found the fast movements of smaller kites (Bldes/Bullets) annoying and an unpredictable..allowing mistakes to happen far too quickly, before you can even kill the kite........!!

Now the 3 metre Blade....(although it is a powerful Kite....do not let out beyond 12 mph for now)......is very controllable..and quite slow moving...

There is time to kill the kite if yer in ****e and most of the lift is upwards anyway...rather than here there and everywhere like bullets/2 metre blades.....

Do you think she would mind the 3 metre?......plus after learning on it...comes the fun in better winds....but at the top end windy days even I can't hold a 3 metre Blade down (with my arms fully strectched up towards the sky and my feet hovering above the ground)...so bear that in mind.......:D

Plus then there's the natural progression to a 4.9 metre...........;)

good theory Lisa.. :) ..my mate has jus bought a 3M blade funnily enough, could give her a shot on that if she's keen..i've got a 4.9 too..could be an arse an let her play with that..lol

Although not very gentlemanly letting your g/f get dragged down the beach, i bet you picked up the skills a lot quicker..haha

nice pics BTW & cool looking tatt'..what is it..??

Steal your mates 3 metre Blade and get down the beach with her....nothing worse than loads of people watching you learn..!!!

Yer you could be an arse and give her the 4.9........!!!

Hmmm...I am no longer with that fella.....split up shortly after I saw him launch the very same 2 metre kite for a pro( I think it was Alex Brown - Alex can you remember who it was it is wasn't you...???) at Camber the day they filmed for "Evolution" DVD. Yep....He went flying too!!! (although he should have know better....!!)

Thing is my ex had just launched me about 12 metres across the sand by 1.allowing me to launch it in those winds 2. Going straight into the middle of the window for launch......so it isn't like he didn't know it would happen to him...........

And yer....you are right about learning the hard way....unfortunately I never quite got the same energies back after being spanked by the kite so much!!! So learnt yer....but gutted I got the fear.......!!!!!!!

Still flying though...:D

Hey....glad you like the tat...I took the design from my ex's kite surf board..... (he served some purpose then...lol) A lightwave a think..... It is the Hawian flower and some leaves.....

Never liked kites smaller than 3m. Had a 2m Samurai but really didn't like it. I learnt to fly with a 3.2 U-Turn and found that a really good size. Another idea might be a U-Turn Helium of a similar size, there's a good amount of pull but a will only lift if you really want it to :)

Depends really what she might want to do with it.

If she wants to fly static / or buggy, then I'd say about a 3m Sammi would be a good first choice, the older 3m little devil, or a 3m PKD buster.

If she might want to get into landboarding / kitesurfing, then I'd got for a cheaper de-powerable. Ozone access / flysurfer rookie etc.

I personally wouldn't go for a bullet, as I've always found the 2.5 too twitchy, although the larger sizes aren't as bad (and I loved the 4m 05). I'm sure the 'rage' might improve on this though.

Sting handles (IIRC) aren't actually load tested for a huge amount of force, so if you're after something that you can use in high winds, that might be something to bear in mind. Although saying that, I've not heard of any snapping.

There's no point in buying anything too small - they're too difficult to control in high winds - so anything less than 3m I wouldn't bother.

Wouldn't go for a blade of any kind as a first kite. Too lifty, and you're more likely to put the girl off rather than turn her into a flying parter. Think slow and controlled..

Find a flying site, and try as many as possible. Don't be snobbish about picking up kit second hand either. No point on spending out a shed load of money to find that she's not going like it, and you're stuck with something that's only going to come out of the bag in 40mph..

HTH.

Im in a similar position, and am looking for a depower to get into landboaring with. I've had the peter lynn Guerilla advised numerous times, and am just deciding which size to go with for my local area. I'm thinking aron the 9m which is apparantly good for high teens-high 2omph upto 35mhp :/

If i get this, then I'd keep my 5.5 bullet for low winds, which i was previously going to sell, but i may aswell have a few kites to choose from!

i would say a samuri 3m would be a nice safe choice

its is very stable and prodictable so it would build confidence to fly and enjoy the time doing it ,but if you wanted power out of it ,it would be there ready to go

cheers Rog

I had all my kite sense beaten into me by Blades...nothing wrong with them if you give them the respect they deserve...

If you are worried about her getting yanked about a bit too much the new Rage would be a perfect kite.

Having flung the 3.5 around at the weekend I found it to be a stable kite with a consistent pull (even when its a bit lumpy bumpy) - it was also very forgiving....could be just what you are after:D

if moneys no object i'd get an 8m sonic or ss turbo diesel. These kites fly on just puffs of wind an will get up when others are parked on the beach.

The depower inspires a measure of confidence. She only has to let go of the bar and the power drops. The transition to a bigger kite is alos much smoother.

Not only that but when the wind picks up you can grab it off her and have some fun with it urself.
