Sand-Yeti Posted April 21, 2008 Report Posted April 21, 2008 Having been 'Down-Under' a few time, I couldn't but help notice that you have a pretty fair sized country and presume that travelling long distances for you guys is probably no big deal. How many miles of that great space have you covered in your buggy this year? Although I use my GPS for navigating, it does record loads of other data that I tranfer to a spreadsheet after every trip. Last Saturday, I noted that I had just passed the 1000 mile mark (1677kms = 1042 miles). This is quite a milestone for me as it took me until July last year to pass 1000 miles. For those who like looking at numbers here's the detail: Quote
nigel Posted April 21, 2008 Report Posted April 21, 2008 Sorry Dave don't keep records most of the time. Don't consider it worthwile recording my visit to the little park that I frequent. Might find I cover 50km over a Saturday and Sunday??? Might be more? Did a very nice 200km run last time at Sandy Point!!! 4.5 hours in a buggy, with a top speed of 70kph. Not bad for a day trip to the beach So does this mean your aiming for a 2500 mile year??? Quote
.Joel Posted April 21, 2008 Report Posted April 21, 2008 Hi Dave, Buggying this summer was not much at all for myself, I got out kiting on the water 4 times a week. Now that the months are getting colder will try to get 3 times a week out on the land. Distance, I've never really used a GPS so no idea. I tend to look at if i'm getting out minimum 2 times a week then i'm happy and doing well. Regards, .Joel Quote
tisme Posted April 21, 2008 Report Posted April 21, 2008 Hi Nigel The tall Irish Fella here ( Elwood ) sorry to hear about your misfortune. hope to catch up with you soon. Quote

PS.. Iv buggied once so far.. Im stilla spaz at it, and only done about.... 150 metres tops. but Im getting there. Quote
Sand-Yeti Posted April 21, 2008 Author Report Posted April 21, 2008 No wind speed records I noticed ? Sadly my GPS doesn't measure wind speed. I do have a separate and very good wind speed indicator but I rarely get that out. When I do it will obviously only be a spot sample of the wind I measure for a short time. Our winds are so inconsisted during the day, that they can go from zero to 30 knots in just a couple of minutes at times. Accurately recording wind speeds would be boring & very time consuming & that's why I don't bother. Note that I have documented the kites that I use and this is an indicator as to the sort of winds we have been having. Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted April 21, 2008 Report Posted April 21, 2008 Note that I have documented the kites that I use and this is an indicator as to the sort of winds we have been having. Doh. Of course. You spoke about searing heat and I was wondering...(as a north wind in Oz would make the heat worse).. if a certain wind direction makes the heat worse for you guys ?? Quote
Steve Posted April 22, 2008 Report Posted April 22, 2008 Love your numbers Sand Yeti! Before I got on the water I had around 15,000klms on my buggy speedo, maybe I have done another couple since and several thousands on the water now. Looks like your blade 4.9 gets used heaps. Quote

You spoke about searing heat and I was wondering...(as a north wind in Oz would make the heat worse).. if a certain wind direction makes the heat worse for you guys ?? The published temps here are recorded at the coast. The desert temps during the daytime where I play re 4 to 5 ºC hotter than at the seaside. Our desert summer shade temps of over 50ºC occur very frequently & that's why our ghaf tree is so important to us as it provides a welcoming shade. I wear a lot of body armour and I get unpleasantly hot but the fun of buggying outweighs this unpleasantness. Of course in the buggy there is no shade. I sometimes stick a thermometer in the sand and will typically record 80+ºC. I avoid touching my tyres & any exposed metal on the buggy. When I OBE, I can't lay too long on the sand as it burns. The only good thing about the high desert temperatures is that the air is very dry. I have buggied on the beach in temps below 40ºC but have had a hard time due to the high humidity. I haven't really thought about if a certain wind direction would make me feel hotter but I think a south west wind blowing up from the equator across the Arabian peninsular would be a hotter. Quote

That's impressive Steve. Over what time frame did you accumulate 15,000 kms? When the wind is right, the 4.9m Blade IV is my favourite of all my Blades. I have a 4.9m Blade III that was also one of my favourites. I just keep it as a back up now. I fly the 6.5m Blade IV and you will notice that I have had my 6.6 Blade III out on 3 occasions this year. I went through an unusual annoying bout of lines breaking for about 3 weekend on my 6.5 Blade IV. I won't bother wasting time fixing a broken line when buggying but just change it for another kite. I fix the lines during the week as I like to sew the looped sleeves on the ends rather than tie a knot. I note FF have introduced the 5m Blurr. It is designed for speed but it may also be OK for our terrain. I plan to buy one to see what it's like. Quote
scrabharlz Posted April 22, 2008 Report Posted April 22, 2008 an interesting thread....must admit after at least 5.5yrs of buggying now I can honestly say I have never kept a track of the amount of distance I might have travelled. Rgds K Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted April 22, 2008 Report Posted April 22, 2008 When the wind is right, the 4.9m Blade IV is my favourite of all my Blades. arent they a brilliant kite... I have one and its fast becoming my number one flyer over the 3.5 cult... I think thats happening as my skills develop... static I mean, at this stage anyway..everytime I pull it out anyone else who kites but doesnt have one just grabs it and has a go as soon as they can.. and Im more than happy to oblige.. I note FF have introduced the 5m Blurr. It is designed for speed but it may also be OK for our terrain. I plan to buy one to see what it's like. You do realise that now... half the kiting world is waiting anxiously for a write up and footage!! Including myself cheers, Nas. Quote
Steve Posted April 22, 2008 Report Posted April 22, 2008 That's impressive Steve. Over what time frame did you accumulate 15,000 kms? When the wind is right, the 4.9m Blade IV is my favourite of all my Blades. Approx 7 years, and around 12500 in 4 of those years. I buggyed a lot at one beach that was 12.5klms one way (25klm round trip, could do several runs on a good tide) and another beach that suited a dfifferent seasonal wind of approx 8klms one way. I once clocked 89.8 kph on that beach with a mate named Mark. Mark used to build the most amazing buggies. The wind that day was around 40 knots, we were using Quadrifoil Classic 2M kites, it was difficult to stand in the wind and very scary launching the kites. A lot of the speed run was slideways, if we had a better angle we would have gone faster. Mark once recorded over 120kph at lake Gairdner when a storm came through, he had to let go of the kite. I towed him back with a 3M Quad Classic and we were doing over 60kph 2 up!!! Nasty storm, great fun it was just on dusk, took us till midnight to find everyone and their kites. I have a 4.9m Blade III that was also one of my favourites. I just keep it as a back up now. I fly the 6.5m Blade IV and you will notice that I have had my 6.6 Blade III out on 3 occasions this year. Hoping to get some really soon too, and hope they are stable and fast, Let us know what you think please. Quote

Nas, Probably right and of course 100 % of all the buggiers are anxiously looking forward to what this new product from FF can do. Quote
