Duncan K Posted January 7, 2008 Report Posted January 7, 2008 were abouts would be a good place to landkite in sydney because i would like to find somewhere were there is alot of land space and wind without heaps of people?!? cheers Duncan Quote
Luke Posted January 7, 2008 Report Posted January 7, 2008 Possibly move to the interior of australia. Space is more than limited in sydney, I have my secret spot which holds 2 people at best and will happily buggy alone to keep using it without pissing off the locals and the rangers coming down on me. as it is a park where people walk through If you don't mind gusty conditions there are a few places around Sydney, rooty hill riverwood and so on. I stay away from them for buggy jumping I need consistent wind. Rocket Quote
lickedysplit_au Posted January 7, 2008 Report Posted January 7, 2008 G'day Duncan Most of the large unpopulated places in Sydney are in the West as Luke said. Was out at Silverwater yesterday afternoon and it was deserted, great spot for a landboard too works well in a NE'er as it blows right up the river. Rooty Hill is also a good spot and has been fairly consistent once the NE'er comes in usually later in the afternoon (as with all western locations) but also works well in nearly all directions. Haven't had much luck out at Riverwood of late but it is a good location for the winter westerlies. Yarra Bay out near Maroubra is a more coastal location but it is alot smaller than the Western locations as you find with most of the coastal parks. Check the locations page as there are some other good locations there. Don't be put off by flying 20-40KM inland, if you pick your time of day (afternoon) you will generally get a decent consistant wind. If you can fly inland you can fly anywhere Another option......Head Stockton way.......doesn't get better Quote
Luke Posted January 7, 2008 Report Posted January 7, 2008 Yup fair enough Troy, good info, but for free styling gotta be on the coast, less room for error IMO. Quote
Duncan K Posted January 7, 2008 Author Report Posted January 7, 2008 what do u guys reckon about Palm Beach i hear quite a few do it there and i hear there is a oval up near manly that is huge and no one ever goes there but people have kited on it before so i think i mite try to find that oval because it sounds pretty good but yeah i really want places were i cant run into anyone because i'm only just starting cheers Duncan Quote
Luke Posted January 8, 2008 Report Posted January 8, 2008 Take my word for it there is nowhere in Palm Beach to land kite, or I would have it pegged out with my name on it. The park near manly is called Tania park overlooking sydney harbor, I have kited there before, and its exposed, only issue is sometimes they are playing sports on it. Quote
Duncan K Posted January 8, 2008 Author Report Posted January 8, 2008 oh ok i see is the sand too soft there. i would also like to know of a road somewhere with no power lines and nearly no cars. thanks alot though because i could hav wasted alot of time on that. Quote
Sando Posted January 8, 2008 Report Posted January 8, 2008 G'day Duncan. I am a new beginner as well and will be in Sydney for the next week before moving back to Darwin. I am also looking for a good place to fly. I am staying in the sutherland area and have got most days free as I am on holidays! The places I have flown at so far are at Rooty Hill, Pioneer Park in Maroubra and Wanda park at Cronulla. The best so far was Wanda due to the excellent wind but there is not too much room to move and there are a few people there. Pioneer park had the most room but the day I went there the wind was average and its a long way to travel! Hope that helps a little bit. Quote
Luke Posted January 8, 2008 Report Posted January 8, 2008 Yeah I have heard wanda is good, because as always, its right on the beach, but it sure looks small last time i was there I was looking at the space and thinking jeeze not much room for error here. Plus you are right, people around also! Quote
lickedysplit_au Posted January 8, 2008 Report Posted January 8, 2008 Yup fair enough Troy, good info, but for free styling gotta be on the coast, less room for error IMO. Fair enough?? Dude, I beg to differ on your coastal freestyle theory. I have had zero problems doing all my ground freestyle work inland. Learnt how to do it inland and continue to have a great time doing it. Just quietly you haven't been out to Rooty Hill in a good NE......You have only flown out there in the winter......Winter winds are CRAP everywhere. Don't get me wrong, the coastal wind is much easier to fly in, I acknowledge that but I wouldn't say you HAVE to be coastal to pull off some freestyle. Is there less room for error on the coast?? or just less room in general Gotta get me some of these "Claimed Kite Spot" Signs!! Quote
Luke Posted January 8, 2008 Report Posted January 8, 2008 Fair enough?? Dude, I beg to differ on your coastal freestyle theory. I have had zero problems doing all my ground freestyle work inland. If I was talking about ground based freestyle I would buggy anywhere, but I am not, i will leave the word freestyle out as its open to to much interpretation and use the word aerials, and for that I will always stay coastal. Coastal is a cleaner wind and above the ground I want to have as little chance of wind sheer as possible enough can go wrong as it is. Yes I like my coastal 1 meter x 1 meter patch of grass, Rockets runway, and to keep it like that as I have, i grease palms, hand out candy to young kids and pat dogs and generally network with the freaked out locals in the park so they dont call the rangers and get me banned. Otherwise I will have a 2 hour drive to stockton beach once every 3 weeks when the tides are right and hope that the wind is there also. Quote
Luke Posted January 8, 2008 Report Posted January 8, 2008 Sydney land kite spots and ratings. In the interests of PUBLIC SAFETY and your own! Beginner = Wide open space, no pedestrians, no power lines, no uneven surfaces, proximity to roads. Intermediate = occasional pedestrians, trees, park benches, parked cars Advanced = Small spaces, high pedestrian traffic, trees, powerlines, close proximity to road Riverwood = Beginner to advanced Rooty hill = Intermediate to advanced Yarra bay = Intermediate to advanced Stockton Beach = Beginner to advanced Pioneer park = Intermediate to advanced Long reef = Advanced Tania Park = Advanced Can't comment on Silverwater, feel free to rate it. schmik Posted January 8, 2008 Report Posted January 8, 2008 It is definatly safer on the coast in summer winds. Even at silverwater in a NE you can get the unexpected gust on the way up or down. Scares the shit out you and can give you can extra 10foot in height or distance. Certainly enough to throw you off balance and botch the landing. Have said that..... it still doesn't stop us doing it does it. Just adds to the difficulty factor. mike Quote
