squidrunmegzy28 Posted December 27, 2007 Report Posted December 27, 2007 hi there everyone, i have just joined up with your kiting website and hope to pick up a few tips and ideas from others while im here... Current scenario... living in joondalup, west aus, and working away for three weeks of the month...managed to pick up an Ozone Frenzy 7.3m recently at a good price a week ago, and was thinking i would wait and put it up with someone who is "in the know" in regards to this style of kite (this my first four line kite.) now i was laying in bed this morning with the window open and noticed that there was a very light breeze outside, so needless to say after aweek of owning a kite and not using, my curiosity got the better of me and i was off down to the local high scool oval to see if i could sort this sucker out.. took a lil while to work it all out, but got there with no headstress and in know time at all had my new baby (if you can call it that) up in the blue with the wind on my back...didnt take long to realise i was gonna need to go get a harness for this to all come together.. previously, the largest kite i have experienced was a 3m delta-style stunt kite purchased from High As A Kite, at the Freo markets..i have many hours exp on this kite and have owned it for 3+years.. anyways, back to todays effort, after ten minutes of flying with no harness, i decided to pack it all up and go visit some kite stores and see what i could come with... 40mins later im wearing a Dakine Tabu and handing over my plastic card while the guy at the shop is saying be careful...back in the car and i head up west coast hwy to get back to my spot, and i see the wind is up...thinking "i should not be doing this!", i set up once again and up she goes... and GO SHE DID! i think i scared myself a little, quite a healthy feeling on the first day with a new kite..feeling no ground beneath your feet for what would have been multiple steps.. kept it together and apart from the grass stains on my butt from a nice solid seated drag, didnt do any damage to myself, the kite, or any of the other citizens enjoying the lovely day.... it was then i decided i would quit while i was ahead, and so packed up and retreated to the safety of the supermarket, while deciding what to cook for dinner.. left the supermarket and guess what??? wind had dropped off abit, so decide to go back for some more...had a blast, got some really good handling going, nice powerful figure eights... at times she felt really floaty at the edge of the window, having not flown this style of kite before, i am not too sure how they are meant to respond...lost air a cpl of times and started to fall out of the sky, but managed to sort itself out and give me a big powerslide as i expected would happen as the wind grabbed it again... went on to do more handling excerises and started to pull down into the powerzone and wasnt at all surpised when she lifted me into mid air and had my heart exploding in my chest...landed safe and apart from running after it to get my balance again, i thought i came out of it alright... sitting back in my bed now, i know it was luck... it could have munted me in a big way...lets see what tomorrow brings!! not sure where i want to go with this kite, but im leaning towards buggy/landboard...for now im quite happy just standing/sitting/dragging and trying not bust myself up too hard...thinking i should maybe look at getting something a little smaller for the windier moments, so guys and girls, would love to hear any suggestions, advice or tips and hints... regards, squidrun Get up, come on get down with the sickness! Baggsy Posted December 27, 2007 Report Posted December 27, 2007 good to hear you are enjoying it already ..1 thing you need to realize is that kites breed !! First there was just one , then another came along ..then another and another and another !! Be careful .. Quote
Pete Posted December 28, 2007 Report Posted December 28, 2007 Welcome Squidrun!!! It is always good to hear of a new first time experience. It sounds like you are hooked already. Just wait until you get some wheels under you.... then the real fun begins. It is wise to be very cautious when starting out. Yes it all looks simple enough, but the difference between a fun day and a trip to the hospital is rather marginal if you don't trust your gut instinct. I hope you get rolling soon and look forward to hearing more of your experiences. Cheers Pete Quote

lickedysplit_au Posted December 28, 2007 Report Posted December 28, 2007 G'day Squid, Welcome to EK's and the wonderful world of kites Just read your first post and would have to say well done! I have a feeling though alot of your experience not turning pear shaped was purely luck. First thing I thought you should know was that your Frenzy is what they call a "De-Powerable" Kite which needs that harness you purchaced to work properly and by flying it "unhooked" (ie. no harness) means you have no depower (ie. Flying at the kites full power). This can very extremely dangerous, especially if a gust hits you and you get lofted. Have you worked out the bar on it yet?? ie. Pull in kite = pulls hard.......Push out = kite pulls less Mother nature has kicked most of the members on here at least once, so you will be told to be careful quite abit.......Be Carefull If you are unsure, best to ask someone. A 7.3M kite as you already know has the potential to launch you alot higher than you could imagine and are generally prepared for. Good work though, good to see you are into it every chance you get all you need now is a Buggy Quote
squidrunmegzy28 Posted December 28, 2007 Author Report Posted December 28, 2007 cheers for the feedback lickedy, all input is highly regarded...to answer your question, yeh have got the concept of the bar sorted(power-on, power-off) but in practise it didnt really seem a whole heap different..as i said in original post though, i was at a suburban football oval with turbulence...will be looking for some clean beach flying in the next couple of days to see what the difference there is...as for asking someone for advice/help/input, thats kinda what im trying to organise through here...if an perth kiters are reading, i would really appreciate some input... ok, now for todays episode...... after sitting up literally all night reading throught the older forums, i got a couple of hours sleep just as the sun came up... woke just before ten and was out the door with all my kites by 10.30.... it was clear from the beginning that it was not a day for the frenzy, so i decided i would head up the coast and look do a reccy tour for future reference... ended up in Guilderton (Moore River) and to say it was blowing its tit off would be a fair call.... found a few good spots for future outings in better weather, had some lunch and then headed on to Lancelin... ok now this is where my day took a turn for the better...got a ride with some 'lations to a spot just north of town on the beach, no-one around and wind was howling (BOM says S/SW winds 20/30 knots shifting S/SE 20/30 knots overnight ). had four of my young cousins with me and they were all out for a swim, while i set up my smallest stunt kite, 1.8m and sussed out the wind for ten to fifteen minutes before landing... really good flying for a small kite, ultra quick with awesome response... next was a 3m delta on 300lb lines, lovely pulling power and with a few more than a few years practice on this baby, was quite confident to go hard...got in the water and bodysurfed for a good 800m north before getting out and walking back up the beach...cousins had bodyboards with them, so i pinched one and for the first time, sat on it and rode the area where the water meets the sand, skimming along at quite a pace and loving it!! about the same 800m run before, walking it back up the beach again to repeat...turned out to be about a 1.5hr session, havent had that much fun in a very long time.... have just got back to joondalup now at 10pm, and am totattly shattered....so much for a quiet coffee run, and reccy run!! my brain is ticking over on ways to alter my bodyboard, and am thinking how nice it will be to get my head around the frenzy and take it for swim...yes i know its not an inflatable, but hey im sure it will happen before the end of this summer!! now for a question, im after some advice on stacking stunt kites.... i have two 3m the same model,(unsure of the name) from High-As-A-Kite, anyone here stacking kites of this size??? would love to pick your brain if this is something you know abit about.... well sleep is calling, and im sure my dreams are gonna be full on, so im not gonna hesitate any longer.. bye for now! nigel Posted December 29, 2007 Report Posted December 29, 2007 now for a question, im after some advice on stacking stunt kites.... i have two 3m the same model,(unsure of the name) from High-As-A-Kite, anyone here stacking kites of this size??? would love to pick your brain if this is something you know abit about.... Usual practice is to use three lines, one to nose, one to each end of the bottom spreader. Have a look at where the bridal attaches to the frame, you should run the lines off here to the other kite behind, some might just be three, but on the bigger kites it can be more. Guessing you'll have 4, 2 off the top spreader, and 2 off the bottom spreader. Might even be one off the bottom of the spine? 1m in length would be my guess, too long and the trailing kite wobbles around too much, too short and it can't get enough air. Quote
squidrunmegzy28 Posted December 29, 2007 Author Report Posted December 29, 2007 nigel, cheers on the tip... gotta do a complete refit of all carbon on one kite before i look at trying this out..thanks again.. Quote
