Assuming nothing has changed from last year regarding this (and I have not seen anything suggesting this) it is fine to static fly without insurance. Just don't wander into the traction zone to do it.

Hi,

I am going to Wallop for the weekend, but a few friends want to come up for the day. They dont have insurance... will they be ok to static fly?

will they have to be supervised by someone with insurance?

Thanks!

Static fly what ?

Single line and stunt kites then no insurance is neccesary (although probably still advisable)

To fly your foils and get pulled about a bit then that is powerkiting and they will need insurance.

As long as you are not intending to fly in the traction area and are not buggy/boarding or anything that involves being pulled around then you will be ok in the area outside of the traction area. This also applies to members of the public too.

Please do not start to question or query this as I do not have time to explain. We will of course explain everything in more detail on the Friday night.

This must be new to this year then. I specifically asked the same question last year and was told if it was static flying that no insurance was required.

To quote Mell form that thread

Traction or Power Kiting is defined (loosley) as intentionally using the power of the kite to move you either whilst on the ground, water or vehicle.

Therefore, getting accidently pulled along by a huge single liner is not traction.

So yes you can fly 4 liners statically but if you are getting dragged about constantly and dont stop flying that is no longer static flying (As you know its happening and so is intentional) and you will need insurance.

So there you go, the definitive answer is "sort of" :)

I am only going on last year when I only had my board about a month and didn't use it much at Wallop as I didn't want to get in the way. I had insurance, but spent most of my flying time over at the side of the tracton area. From what I remember not many had wrist bands on over there. I certianly saw nobody being challenged, although this might change this year with more helpers around.

Anyhoo, how about just getting BBC insurance? It isn't gonna break the bank and its worth it for a bit of peace of mind. Then you can get pulled about while static flying!
