rickp101 Posted July 24, 2005 Report Posted July 24, 2005 Hey guys, I live in Leeds and am just about to start what I hope will be a long and enjoyable hobby of kitesports. So....I am currently after noobie advice Went into Anti Gravity in Leeds the other day and had a chat with the guy in there and after his advice and reading forums and websites I am thinking of going for something like a Samurai 3m and maybe a Kheo Air-S to learn to kite and board with before maybe trying kite surfing in the future (I currently wakeboard so the water does appeal!). Where do you all fly/ride around Leeds. I have been told about Ponte races and have seen kites on Roundhay Park near me. Is Roundhay a good place to learn to fly? Can you ride a board there? I am sure I have seen buggies on there before. Are the kite/board suggested good ones for me to start out with? I have never flown a power kite before although my board skills are OK with a snowboard and wakeboard background so hoping that once I get the hang of flying I can move onto the board relatively succesfully (I am sure I will eat those words soon ) Are there any clubs or anything locally that I could turn up to and have a chat with people who know what they are talking about or is the best thing for me to just wait for a windy day and head to Ponte and see who is about? Thanks for any help given and hope to see you all soon. Rich Quote
asid_promo1 Posted July 24, 2005 Report Posted July 24, 2005 Hi Rich there are a few people that go to roundhay to fly. I try and get out as much as possible and will let you know (here) when there are a few of us going. Good to see more people getting involved! Ta Adam Quote
lazarus Posted July 25, 2005 Report Posted July 25, 2005 roundhay isn't too bad if the wind is blowing the right direction. it tends to be gusty and abit unstable if the wind is blowing in over the trees on either side. as for the kit you've been advised on, dave (buggy killer) from anti gravity really knows his stuff, he won't go giving you bum advise and won't go selling you some thing that is going to be way too much for you to learn with. expect to be visiting dave more often as you get better and start needing a range of kites for different winds. boards and buggys on roundhay park, erm, i've heard rumours that you aren't ment to ride any thing with more than 2 wheels on the park, but i've never found a sign that clarifies this. i know people who have chatted with the rangers while they've been boarding and not had any trouble, though i am yet to hear any thing about rangers and buggys. you also have the Jimmy Savile factor to take into account, he has a penthouse apartment that looks onto the park and has been rumoured to call in complaints to the rangers if he sees people buggying/boarding. there is a pretty good chance you may have spotted me buggying on the park, i've not been told to stop yet sadly as far as clubs go this is pretty much it (unless you are at leeds uni, in which case drop siz a pm), just keep an eye out for who's going to be where and go show your face. every one i've met through kiting has been very friendly and more than happy to share their wisdom and experiences. if you have transport its worth trying to get to the coast, there are quite a few of us fly up at redcar. though i'm told there are some nice spots out towards bridlington and the like. best bet is to post here if you're heading to the park and see you turns up. I'd advise not flying by your self just incase anything does happen, and also buy pads if you're planning on boarding, helmet and knee at least, but more is always better. see you in the park Quote
rickp101 Posted July 25, 2005 Report Posted July 25, 2005 Thanks for that guys, I think I may be purchasing my kit this week. You know what its like when you get excited about something. Your ability to be patient just disappears. So may be hoping for some gentle beginner type winds this weekend to take the kite out and get some practise in. Will check on here to see if people are heading anywhere locally? I do have a car so trips to the beach will certainly be on the cards in the future. See you around Rich Quote
DreadedTom Posted July 25, 2005 Report Posted July 25, 2005 yeah, he was missing me... :D :D Greetings from Krakow folks! Lots of sun but no wind im afraid. Hi to those who are heading to the area...In terms of the uni club(sorry, "Society") it has all been set up and we will be starting to recruit people at the Freshers Fair, as already mentioned by my glamorous assistent Siz;) Not sure how its all going to work over the course of the next year but will definately be a nice social scene to meet up with fellow flyers. On that note i have a bit of a request to make:We were thinking of taking a few short films of people flying in leeds, nothing special, just short clips on a digi camra and putting them together as some sort of montage to play during freshers week.Hope to inspire people as they pass by and make them sign up.So if anyone has any clips theyve taken themselves and would be willing to donate to the cause(all referenced to the creater of course!) then they would be gratefully received. At the mo this is just an idea an nothing is going to get done till we're all back in Leeds, but something to think about. Also,if anyone has any ideas, suggestions or whatever about the clu..society then make them known:) Cheers folks an hope the wind blows back home! gravitate Posted July 25, 2005 Report Posted July 25, 2005 I have really badly hurt my knee at the beech this w/e This is just a reminder to buy pads !!!!!!!!!!!! Quote
rickp101 Posted July 27, 2005 Report Posted July 27, 2005 Well I have bought my kite now, an Ozone Samurai 3m. Hopefully this will be a good kite to learn with and also get me moving a bit on a board when I decide which one to get. Now to wait for some wind. Will probably head to Roundhay Park on Saturday if the 10mph winds forecasted are about as that should be a good speed to learn with. Not sure if that is enough wind to tempt any non-beginners out but if anyone is about I will be the guy with the Red 3m Samurai probably looking confused and will welcome any advice. Quote
gregh Posted July 27, 2005 Report Posted July 27, 2005 should be a great kite to start learning with Rick, I maybe away this weekend, but if not I should be down at the park as I also have a new toy to try out Quote

kit Posted August 1, 2005 Report Posted August 1, 2005 Hi guys, sorry for long absence. Welcome to the new people! Tom, when you back from your treks? I owe you (well, your sister) a cheque, and I believe you owe me a book. I'm leaving Leeds on Thursday, for good Would love to have a last get together one evening, but now have too much stuff to pack for my year’s backpacking, and am also kiteless until I get to my parents I keep dreaming about flying my kite, it’s been about 6 weeks and I’m hankering for some flying! Fortunately the chimera is accompanying me through Asia and New Zealand. Thanks all you Leeds Kitefliers for being such good kite mates over the past months. It’s been a blast and I’ll miss you! Hopefully see you in a year’s time when I’m back. Peace. Quote
Alan Gray Posted August 3, 2005 Report Posted August 3, 2005 I will be in Leeds this weekend. Anyone flying in the area, if so where? Quote

gregh Posted August 4, 2005 Report Posted August 4, 2005 5m Frenzy!!! That is going to need some serious wind to get going, checking the Ozone website for water use they say 25 knots win up to 45 knots for the 5m!! The charts here suggest 16 -> 30mph for the 5m!! http://www.kiteatb.co.uk/_windchart/#frenzy04 Should have fun with it today, as it looks windy out there! regards, greg Quote

gregh Posted August 4, 2005 Report Posted August 4, 2005 I'd love to Adam, but I'm off camping tonight. They are a doddle to set up, unroll kite, unroll bar, connect the lines to the kite, the bar is already connected, and the lines are all numbered so you connect 1->1, 2->2, 3->3, 4->4 and then your off! regards, greg Quote
