jason mcgowan Posted May 8, 2004 Report Posted May 8, 2004 Do they provide floaty jumps like lei kites?I'm looking at the 4.9 or what other options do I have in the open celled under £400 brand new bracket? cheers jas Quote
andylyon87 Posted May 8, 2004 Report Posted May 8, 2004 sorry to hijack, but if anyone can say how floaty both the 8.5 and the 4.9 are I would be very happy sorry bout hijack Quote
jason mcgowan Posted May 8, 2004 Author Report Posted May 8, 2004 I think the 8 would have way more thinking it would be like a parachute:eek: Quote
The Flyin Scotsman Posted May 8, 2004 Report Posted May 8, 2004 LEI's generally have a much larger surface area so have more float. The Blade2 has masses of static lift, whereas the Blade3 is more similar to buggy racing kites in that it needs to be moving to generate the lift for big jumps. The 4.9m Blade3 gives very punchy short airs, whereas the 8.5m Blade3 gives a lot smoother and floatier lift. Hope that helps, Kev Quote
andylyon87 Posted May 8, 2004 Report Posted May 8, 2004 have been thinking about gettin both of these kites some time this year would be helpful to know, as I'm sure you'd agree, what the jumps are like. They're supposed to be floaty:rolleyes: which is always good Quote
jason mcgowan Posted May 8, 2004 Author Report Posted May 8, 2004 so the 4.9 is a shoot up, drop down type ?sounds like my old waterfoils what about luffing when on a bar? Quote
SkintMonkey Posted May 8, 2004 Report Posted May 8, 2004 I wouldnt say a blade isnt floaty. in the right winds it will take you up and up and up and up................ I was in about 20mph the other day and got one huge floaty jump. Landed softly and enjoyed myself immensly. I was able to control my landing so i didnt land in the cow dung. ...well slightly at least Quote
The Flyin Scotsman Posted May 8, 2004 Report Posted May 8, 2004 I'm not saying i they arnt floaty, compared to my 12.5m titan, they arnt, which isnt surprising when you think about the size difference. There are a number of kites which have just as good lift and float as the Blade3, the PKD Century Soulfly I think is almost an exact match on speed, power, lift and handling, In the right winds all kites have lift. The Flyin Scotsman Posted May 8, 2004 Report Posted May 8, 2004 Funny you should say that, my highest jump so far with its been 4.5miles high and about 300miles long... Yeh ok so I was on a Boeing 737 at the time but the Titan was with me, lol Kev Quote
jason mcgowan Posted May 8, 2004 Author Report Posted May 8, 2004 does the 4.9 have as much power as the 12.5 then? Quote
The Flyin Scotsman Posted May 8, 2004 Report Posted May 8, 2004 No-where near as much, the 12.5m is twice the size of the 4.9m remember. The 12.5m is a de-powerable kite as well though so while flying you can power up to the full 12.5m's or let the bar out and de-power it to about 6m's Kev Quote
jason mcgowan Posted May 8, 2004 Author Report Posted May 8, 2004 I was looking at the 7m spirit aswell which I think is the same sort of power, which would you get? Quote
The Flyin Scotsman Posted May 8, 2004 Report Posted May 8, 2004 I've not flown the spirit but I'd say that if you dont specifically want a de-powerable kite then dont get one, get the Blade3. Kev Quote
jason mcgowan Posted May 8, 2004 Author Report Posted May 8, 2004 I have a couple of lei kites which I only use the strap to depower,I find that on water I just edge hard to force the kite forward. How is this achieved on land?Do you think 1 depower kite equals 2 or 3 blades? Quote
Rich Holloway Posted May 8, 2004 Report Posted May 8, 2004 I've got some huge floaty airs of my 6.6 Blade III but that was in 15+mph winds, about 10 or 12 ft in height and only a couple of feet in length. Its well scary being that powered up though, definately not for beginners, I've been powerkiting for 10 years and kiting for over twenty and still found it hairy. The blade III is a great kite but the larger ones (4 and up )are definately lethal weapons and should not be handled by the inexperienced. As flexi says "Blade IIIs are for intermediate to advanced flyers" http://www.flexifoil.com/roughguide/howto/gettingstarted/getting_started_1.php Quote
The Flyin Scotsman Posted May 8, 2004 Report Posted May 8, 2004 Yes one de-powerable kite has a wind range of 2 or 3 blades, but if you want the optimal power in every given windspeed you'll still need 2 or 3 frenzys out of the 4. To edge on land and put more tension on the kite just steer upwind more basically Kev Quote
littledevil Posted May 12, 2004 Report Posted May 12, 2004 hey kev just wondering what wind ur titan starts to get fun in and would it be the same as my g2 13m? i had a go on a 15.5 phyco yesterday and it was really good. the wind must have been below 10mph and i was jumping and board jumping but the kite wasn't very stable though but loads of pull in the low wind. I assume the titan is more stable and forgiving but less powerful is this right? Thanks Quote
Chris De Roock Posted May 12, 2004 Report Posted May 12, 2004 My 6.6 gives me floaty jumps from +10 MPH. In 15-18 MPH you start wondering if and when you come back down again... Smaller Blades also give good jumps in the right winds, but not as floaty as a 6.6 or 8.5. A 3.0 for instance will take you up in 20 MPH, but it will be a fast and high jump, not far and floaty. Quote
Gretski Posted May 12, 2004 Report Posted May 12, 2004 Well ive got a 4m Blade 2 and the jumps are floating from time to time.... But id have to say that the majority of the jumps are quite snatchy... My mate has a 6.8 Razor and in the right wind that thing can give really high and smooth jumps... have to watch out for luffing tho with it being a race kite and all it doesnt like it when it slows down... needless to say when this happend and it decided to open up again in the middle of the pwerzone the results where painfull!! Id be interested to know more on the 6.6 Blade 3 mind.. Tempted into one for use for my MTB. Quote
jason mcgowan Posted May 12, 2004 Author Report Posted May 12, 2004 yeh thats what I thought I'm looking at a 4m this weekend but really I want float ,is this a bit small? Quote
Gretski Posted May 12, 2004 Report Posted May 12, 2004 All depends on the wind to be honest! The 4 can be a nice floaty kite but you need to right conditions! Then again im talking about the Blade 2, not tried the 3 to be honest... not the 4 anyway! Quote
Brother Dave Posted May 12, 2004 Report Posted May 12, 2004 does the 4.9 have as much power as the 12.5 then? depends what kind of winds you put it up in But no my 4.9mblade2 is super floaty sometimes in a good wind and have had some really good airs with it Brother dave Quote
englisho Posted May 13, 2004 Report Posted May 13, 2004 My 6.6 Blade III gives excellent floaty jumps.. with the 4m I come back down a bit quicker than I'd like too.. but the 6.6 is GREAT for floating, and MUCH MUCH more important.. neither as ever luffed on me. Which can't be said for certain other makes you know what I mean if you have one. Quote
