Same hear for newbie advice. im shure all these nice established kitesurfers are sick to death of people invading there forum to ask questions that they must of asked so many years ago, but please help us! I too would like to know of a good board and a good starter kite. Its either a strike or storm 2 at the moment (i REALLY like the storm 2).

Im thinking a storm 2 20m, and a second hand wakeboard for a starter setup, with no lessons of course

Hey,

I'm almost a beginner (still building my board, done some dragging).

From what I can gather:

Wakeboards have too much rocker and are difficult for beginners

Directionals have volume and are easy to get going but gybing them can be headache

Twin tips are cool

Mutants - I still haven't worked out what they are.

Physically bigger boards will plane easier (trust me I'm qualified to say that!) so beginners need something with a reasonably large surface area to make it easier to get started, hopefully this same board will suit as a low wind board once we get the hang of it (or punt it on). The lift required depends on the weight of the rider, the heavier you are the bigger the board needs to be. Obviously don't go looking at stubbies, 'probably' something from about 150 to 170 should be OK depending on your weight.

I'm building a 170 x 40.5 plywood board in the hope that it might suit me as 100kg beginner, as you say there is little really definitive info out there for us but I have a feel that this should work out, if not I'll have to make a bigger one :)

Look at what experienced boarders of your weight use for a low wind board, and learn in higher winds than they would use it in is probably about right!

Hoping some experienced boarders will come and pick holes in my thoughts now (rather than after i get on the water...).

yep near enuff dude...............

weight is a variable.........

heres what i did.......3 hours on big fat directional then got str8t up on 169 but i cudnt hold edge in at all - soon as i jumped on 148 vari i was up and away holding edge in keeping upwind

i weigh 75 kgs = too light for 169 soon as wind picked up

as you progress youll be able to hold edges in but generally you want larger board/smaller kite combination until your confidently going upwind and can hold larger kites at window edge and shoving that back legs in like crazy....

cabrinha boards are fine but theres so much choice - i would say whatever length you choose ensure you remain with some width (38cm minumum maybe up to 42cms?) - width will really help as a stability factor - one youll appreciate once you start jumping

never apologise for asking -weve all been there and down the beach instead of typed answers ud gladly recieve answers or even a dragging down to the waters edge to help you get feet in straps and get you working on your technique..............

wasnt long ago i was asking these questions myself...................try online board reviews

stay safe - if in doubt phone shops- sean at airjam is as cool about help as you will find anywhere - theres loads of genuine people in this sport

hi ya

if you interested I have brand new cabrinha prankster 150 with only 8hrs use in egypt for sale at a very reasonable price.Selling because having ridden it theres not much diffence between my other 1st board which i learnt on 161 airush jimmy lewis, and now relise that I need something alot smaller. Main reason is i thought it would be alot harder to ride a smaller board, like a 130, and due to being very lightweight need something with less length and volume now. Reason I bought it was because last year I rode the this type of board for a week in Fuerte C/I, loved it and progressed well, as I was still trying to find my water feet. Do some more investigation on boards as there's loads out there, but do not go to big, height/weight pending as your 1st board can be kept and used as a light wind board as you progress. If you can get into london or down to dorset then the board can be seen, it will be on ebay soon, waiting on a digi cam.

thks,

the best way to learn about boards is have a couple of lessons and use the range of boards avasilable to the instructor. may seem costy but it may save you buying a board then selling it on.

failing that get down the local beach and talk to people while thay are waiting for wind. a lot of peole have stuff from learning that they may lend you.

as for the 20m storm 2 for learning on, i hope its a joke unless you weigh twety stone or so.

some one posted the definition of each boards and did their homework but i would like to add one more thing, he states that a wakeboard has too much rocker, this is true. A Mutant board however is an actual wake board that has fins added at the heels. this keeps it from sliding and is an actual apropriate board that can be used in the water.

as for learning i too am in your spot. i reasearched for about 2 weeks at 8 hrs per day and came up with a conclusion.

from what i gather the slingshot LFT (little fat twin) is the best board to learn on simply because it is so boyant. if you over fly the kite, not power enough or do somthing wrong the board will float for longer than others and you wont sink when error is made, you have a chance to bring kite back or etc...

the only draw back is that they are not so good when the wind really pics up, it is to wobbly in strong winds. these boards are not too easy to find used because most of the people who use them do not sell them due to the fact that they are excelent in super light wind days.

when you are learning which should be in calm to moderate winds, what you want is a longer board to get you plaining sooner. wheight, i am told by those who sell boards is not a consideration. in reallity your weight does play a factor when learning because you will probably be going out in lower winds. what you need to realize and be prepared to do is that you will not have only one board but at least 2. one for learning which is the most important, and one for when you really want to rip, this should be the smaller of the 2.

i wheigh in at 220 lbs and have a 15.5 titan, i just ordered myself a 2002 model Bicsport 175 airflow. it looks like a sweet board and this is what i plan on learning on.

all in all, the biger the board the faster you should pick up the sport but once you master the board you will be looking for a second, the next one will just be a matter of preference and style.

Sorry as far as I know a Mutant is a cross between a diretional and a twin tip (hence name). Normally set up with two straps and big surf style fins at teh back so you can ride it liek a directional, toesdie back as you can not swop feet due to only two straps. OR you can ride it backwards as the nose has smaller twin tip/wake fins, just means that you have teh same feel as a longer TT board when doing so as teh bindings are set closer to one end.

Most "volume" TT boards have a heel side fin to aid traction as they are not so good at edging due to teh thickness of the deck.

cheers for all the responses guys, i have definatley been given some food for thought, the slingshot lft is very wide compared to other boards is this much of a problem once you can surf a bit, ie does it limit what winds you can use it in?

peace out
