snowboard Posted February 5, 2004 Report Posted February 5, 2004 greetings will be in cape town k/surfing in the strand, false bay from feb29th . :what strength are the prevailing winds there; thought of taking 8.4 and 11.8 airblasts with my 135 mad eel board. any ideas? Quote
savage Posted February 5, 2004 Report Posted February 5, 2004 Can't remember where false Bay is but for the Cape in general I'd take everything you've got kite wise. Quote
flyingdutchman Posted February 7, 2004 Report Posted February 7, 2004 False bay prob not the greatest place for kiting but anyways.... try BigBay\River Mouth or Kitebeach which are all spots along blouberg beach in milnerton. the winds been consistently strong for the last few weeks but u know what the weather like.... if i told u to bring one kite murphys law would prove me wrong.... im a very light rider @ 65kgs and riding a 120cm board with a 10m kite almost every weekend, my brother weighs 75-80kg and rides a 130cm with a 12.2m kite. Most ppl here fly 12m and the winds NORMALY from about 9-19 knots try these sites just to get a feeling of what winds gonna be like over next few weeks.... http://buoy.ocens.net/wxnav.jsp?region=south_africa&program=Maps http://www.rtww.co.za/cgi-bin/rtww.dll/get_station_current?station=5 http://iafrica.com/weather/capetown/ good luck on picking a kite size and enjoy your stay!!! snowboard Posted February 10, 2004 Author Report Posted February 10, 2004 thanks for the replys, the reason i 'm going to flase bay area ie the strand is the warm sea.coming from the uk i wear a wet suit for at least 10months of the year and as it is our winter going out regularly in minus degree weather what a nice change to get some warm water! anyway got a flat on the beach in the strand. i will be able to get 2 kites in without surcharges at the airport so 8.4 (11.4 flat), 10 (13.6 flat) 11.8 (16 flat) ,now which 2 ? flyingdutchman Posted February 10, 2004 Report Posted February 10, 2004 I would recommend the 2 smaller kites as the wind has been pumping recently and the winds at strand are a little stronger than the other kiting spots... if you cant find wind then just phone 0822346300 - its an automated service that you can check all the diffrent spots around the cape with. If you have the time then i reccomend you also take a trip to langebaan - about a 1 drive up the west coast. its a pretty much a laggoon with some very fine spots around there. if you wanna find spots the go to http://www.ikiteboarding.com and http://www.capesports.co.za http://www.cabrinha.co.za also has some nice summaries of all the spots around. If you need any help in directions just find a kitesurf shop in blouberg (most locals can point you in the direction) and ask the shop peeps for some help - they more than willing to help and are great ppl! enjoy!
