OwainGDWilliams Posted December 1, 2003 Report Posted December 1, 2003 Cheers, I think I will be getting my buggy in the new year so will get the helmet then. OGDW. Quote
Gixer Posted December 1, 2003 Report Posted December 1, 2003 I got myself one of these. http://www.surf-wax.co.uk/acatalog/400_dirt_full_face_helmet.jpg Saved me in my accident. You can get one from HERE. Keep safe all, and wear that protection, it may look silly but it has saved me from worse DAMAGE (UPDATED) than what I am in, and i'm still in a poxy wheelchair Quote
tiny_clanger Posted December 1, 2003 Report Posted December 1, 2003 i use one of these it's not full face, but when I tried a full face helmet I got really freaked out and claustrophobic, so I stick with the open one. It's better than nuthin' Quote
OwainGDWilliams Posted December 1, 2003 Report Posted December 1, 2003 If I get this helmet think I will get some goggles aswell, just so I dont get sand and stuff in my face.... OGDW. Quote
coupe-se Posted December 1, 2003 Report Posted December 1, 2003 I ALWAYS wear a helmet when buggying!! The full face helmets (moto-cross style) with the chin guard that protrudes forward by a large amount concerns me abit. With the chin guard protruding so far out..........won't that increase the whiplash effect and push the head/neck further back if you land flat on your face??? Ski helmet have chin guards but do not protrude anywhere near as far as moto-cross helmets. This is just a personal thoughts.....wondered what everyone thinks??? What the experience of those using them??? Quote
anc Posted December 3, 2003 Report Posted December 3, 2003 in most of the buggy pics I look at people are without helmets. how come? I use a helmet and (now) motorcross body armor. Quote
spikeman Posted December 3, 2003 Report Posted December 3, 2003 I'll tell ya how come. It's cos they have kevlar implants under their scalp and when they crash it does not hurt them. Or............... It's cos getting hurt only happens to other people. Or................They are stupid. Lol Spike Quote
8015 Posted December 3, 2003 Report Posted December 3, 2003 Safety culture take time to grow, a lot of photos are quite old. Most of us are fully aware by now that when we roll our buggies one of the rear wheels will smack us in the back of the head 9 times out of 10! JIM Quote
Brother Dave Posted December 3, 2003 Report Posted December 3, 2003 Does not matter what sports you do if they are dangerous then always use and wear a helmet:D me thinks that being on a life surpport machine would be pretty bad:eek: dave:D Quote
bladeII4.9 Posted December 4, 2003 Report Posted December 4, 2003 i use a full face bike helmet, works for me. i see peeple writing 'OBE' alot, what exactly does this stand for, sorry for interrupting the theme. Quote
OwainGDWilliams Posted January 12, 2004 Report Posted January 12, 2004 Just got my Dirt Helmet and find it on the small side, anyone else found the XL helmet a little bit on the small side? It doesnt really cover my chin....can anyone recommend another make? I think the shop I get my gear from only do credit notes so Im going to have to get them ordering in a different make....your help in this matter would be great. OGDW. Quote
KR1B2 Posted January 12, 2004 Report Posted January 12, 2004 After an accident nobody says I wish I wasnt wearing a helmet. Had motorbike smash a few years back and got knocked out. Dont know what I hit my head off but it was effin hard. If I hadnt had a well fitting good quality helmet on I wouldnt be typing this and boring you to death. Quote
rayens Posted January 12, 2004 Report Posted January 12, 2004 I am afraid this part of what I was saying way back at the beginning of this thread. These helmets are only Skate helmets so have a one size fits all thing with them and XL is only a kids size This is why I went down the route of having proper sized helmets that will fit up to 63cm - and ACTUALLY fit up to this size. On top of that the protection is very limited Quote
OwainGDWilliams Posted January 12, 2004 Report Posted January 12, 2004 I will need to see what the kite shop is willing to do. Fingers crossed they will give me the dosh back so I can go to my local motorbike shop and get a motocross help for the £70 I bought the dirt helmet with. OGDW. Quote
rayens Posted January 12, 2004 Report Posted January 12, 2004 I am going to plug my helmet again because I think it is really good for buggy use £50 only for a really good helmet that fits properly and gives you protection - there are a few people on here that will more than agree with me Otherwise look at the Atmosphere Kites link below in accessories Sorry to bang on but safety is important Quote
adamski Posted January 12, 2004 Report Posted January 12, 2004 Check these out! CHEAP helmets I would recco a gold acu minimum. Certified to at least help a bit!! I will be wearing mine:D Quote
rayens Posted January 12, 2004 Report Posted January 12, 2004 I agree with the ACU gold standard - but you need to check the weight as you do not want the weight of a normal motorbike helmet - far too much for buggy use Quote
bulletmagnet Posted January 12, 2004 Report Posted January 12, 2004 i can vouch for rayens helmets i purchased one yesterday. thoroughly recommended, light, good price and great protection Quote

OwainGDWilliams Posted January 13, 2004 Report Posted January 13, 2004 Do you have a website for these helmets adamski?? OGDW. Quote
adamski Posted January 13, 2004 Report Posted January 13, 2004 Here ya go!! These are fine and a reasonable price. I have the blue one:p Quote
Simon Bailey Posted January 13, 2004 Report Posted January 13, 2004 I can thouroughly recommend the helmets that rayens supplies. I ordered one last wed, arrived friday, buggied sun, fell off, face planted, no bonce damaged, cool! I got the black and silver one, it looks cool as f***, lightweight, ACU approved and only £50!!!! At that price, you shouldn't even have to think about it... Quote
OwainGDWilliams Posted January 13, 2004 Report Posted January 13, 2004 Found a shop that stock the Grit X full face helmets. Anyone tried one of these on? I notice they are made larger than the Dirt helmets. OGDW. Quote
8015 Posted January 13, 2004 Report Posted January 13, 2004 I seem to recall the standards for cycle helmets came in for much criticism earlier in this thread. When I crashed on the 4th head first into large granite boulders I crushed my Giro incline and split it in 2 places, my head however was completely intact (my neck isn't but no helmet will prevent neck injury. I estimate (because the GPS turned itself off ealrier in the day) that I probably crashed at 20mph or more. The helmet did exactly what it needed to and I would have no qualms about using a cycle helmet again. I have however been on the lookout for a nice full face MX helmet tested to even higher standards (I was before the crash) - I'm actually a bit narked that I never got a reply to my size enquiry for a carbon one I saw in a sale I've mashed my face mountain biking so want the helmet for that as much as buggying! The other point is, I was wearing elbow pads that cover my forearms too, my hands got a bit cut up but apart from that there wasn't a scratch on me - the gear works! JIM Quote
