Lightweight24 Posted September 4, 2003 Report Posted September 4, 2003 I'm considering building a deck from scratch and then adding trucks as i've got access to a vacuum bag for molding parts. I've looked at some of the boards on the market and seen the materials they're made of and it looks like an 8-10 ply of maple seems the simplest way to go. Composites might come later. Was just wandering if anyone's tried this before and got any advice or info, pictures of results etc. Cheers Simon Quote
alexb Posted September 4, 2003 Report Posted September 4, 2003 as soon as you get this dialled, we're starting production BIG TIME!! Quote
JoeSchmoe Posted September 4, 2003 Report Posted September 4, 2003 lushlongboards.com has a very good guide to building a longboard deck...the procedure's very similar. other points: Channel trucks need an angle to work on (30 degrees - ish). If they don't have this, you won't turn. If you can get the point of pivot above the centre of gravity, your board will be more stable (the downside of this is that you'll have less ground clearance). A concave board will feel more responsive, and hold it's shape better, but will be harder to shape (flatter decks will sag eventually). Hope all that helps...good luck, and don't forget to post your results! Quote
Bonobo Posted September 4, 2003 Report Posted September 4, 2003 Originally posted by Lightweight24 Was just wandering if anyone's tried this before and got any advice or info, pictures of results etc. Me and two mates have built and customised decks before, but recent production has ceased due to other commitments. In our experience the quality of Maple laminates varies considerably and thus affects strength/flex and durability etc. We have made many prototypes and broken many more, from all wood to wood/Carbon/Glass/Kevlar and All Composite. We used a former and press as opposed to Vacuum Bagging. Take a look at Snowboard designs, look how they lay up laminates and use fibre directions etc to strengthen different parts of the board etc. I currently ride a 4ply deck with Carbon/Glass reinforcement, it's the flexiest thing I know and half the weight of anything else out there. Bit rough round the edges but a plush ride for Kite and Freeride downhill. Freestyle limited by its ground clearance!! Hope to get up and running again soon. Quote
Monkey1599968604 Posted September 5, 2003 Report Posted September 5, 2003 doh, i made a new thread instead of a reply, see the one http://www.flexifoil.com/community/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=21459 about what i ways talking about! Quote
Bonobo Posted September 5, 2003 Report Posted September 5, 2003 Aaahhhhh Monkey!!! LOL!! (S'pose no-one remembers the TV Prog??) From your new thread/reply, yeah that wood quality we found defo the most important. About Wheels, try: ATB Shop or Coastguard Kites Nice Primo Composite hubs and Primo Stryker tyres will finish the job nicely!! Or those big 10inch NoSno knobblies. I think prices are quoted for set of 4 but don't take my word for it, check supplier. Cheers Quote
