vibro100 Posted December 29, 2013 Report Posted December 29, 2013 My lad learnt on a 5 m and 7 m RRD kites. Mainly because it what I fly. I modified the bar throw due to his short arms. Then added pig tales to the kite to compensate. Lewis Crathern helped me out with this as he is local to me. I don't know if all bars can be modded like this, the older rrd bars have a screw on cleat so it can be moved easily. Quote

balugh Posted December 30, 2013 Report Posted December 30, 2013 Hey Skid...you need to check out what Adrian did to get Toby up and riding over the last couple of years. He started him on a 3.5m Cabrinha Convert...and his big kite is still normally only a 6m Naish Park. There's some really good small kites around...though they can be pricey. You might also want to start him with a foil and a land board....especially this time of year... You'll be able to help him more easily on land and he won't get so cold. Quote
skidmarks Posted December 30, 2013 Author Report Posted December 30, 2013 ive a ozone trainer on its way to me as i speak defo gota get him profient with a foil i was on foils till i hit the water and one lesson on the water i was up and going for the sandbar at hunny but had no idea how to get back ha ha well i lost the board but the body drag that was taught to me like half hr before came in handy and a local picked the board up good times and the start of a obsesion Quote
vibro100 Posted December 30, 2013 Report Posted December 30, 2013 I agree, with the kids its all about time flying the kite on the land. I put my lads foil straight onto a bar. Another thing is drumming in the safty side of it. Another good lesson is to take him to the beach and get him to land and launch every person going in and out. Gives them an understanding of the wind window and to check lines. This was somthing Lewis made my lad do time and time again. It was amazing how many times competant kiters were giving the thumbs up for launching and my lad was telling them there lines were wrong and making them check them again. Makes them feel like a prized pratt. Quote

Makes them feel like a prized pratt. Agree 100%. Knowledge and kite skills are paramount. When you watch the most precious thing in your life head out on their first run you need to be sure they have enough control to come back! One thing that really helped with toby was reducing the chicken loop. Fortunately the Cabrinha bar was great as the safety released the chicken loop. The problem for kids is that the loop prevents them depowering as their arms are already stretched just to reach the bar. My other recommendation is spending money on a good wetsuit. We are also fortunate that the local kiting community keep an eye on the boy . Great support from Hunstanton Watersports and Hunstanton sailing club Quote
