boardbuilder Posted March 25, 2013 Report Posted March 25, 2013 Hi all, we are heading to westward ho area this thur-mon ie Easter weekend. Does anyone know of any spots as it looks like mostly easterlies :-( typical eh! sigh Can you kitesurf in the esturary? I need my Ksurf FIX! arrgghh Cheers all :-) Hope everyone gets out soon supposed to be warming up to approx 10oC this sun, at last! yay Quote
Silveringsurfer Posted March 25, 2013 Report Posted March 25, 2013 The best place is the estuary. Drive past the tiki factory shop towards Braunton burrows. Over the humpback bridge and follow the road until you get to a left turn down a toll road. Take a few pounds for the barrier and then proceed down the road until you reach the car park. Park on the left near to the house. Rigging is on the beach if there is any or in the carpark but do launch on the beach. it's very narrow and stony at high tide but preferable to contending with the scramble over the ridge from the carpark with some very weird winds. You can kite for about an hour or so either side of high and have quite an expanse of water. The water does shift up and down the channel outside this time and can take a board out of reach upwind quicker than you can bodydrag but that's about the only real danger. Enjoy! boardbuilder Posted March 25, 2013 Author Report Posted March 25, 2013 Cheers silveringsurfer! Much appreaciated! Just looked on google maps think I can see the way. Looks like there is a road American Road which goes past the Willowfield Lake Holiday Cottages follow that till near the end and hang a left then you on the road by the esturary follow this short way to the house and sand path in the dunes to the beach Cheers, If the wind is light I'll be on my 15m red and white peter lynn guerilla (mattress) if your or anyones elses is about! Silveringsurfer Posted March 26, 2013 Report Posted March 26, 2013 If the estuary is broadly a 'v' shape you want the eastern side of it. American road and the boardwalk footpath take to the western side. The east is more of a tidal pool and so safer. The main channel runs close to the shore on the western side and the water rips past this point. It looks pretty but is much riskier. The eastern side is much more benign when full of water. Access via Velator road along the river Caen for the eastern side and more cross onshore winds. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Quote
Andy C Posted March 26, 2013 Report Posted March 26, 2013 Is that going to work in Easterly winds? They look to be blowing almost directly westward this weekend. Quote
si-fly Posted March 26, 2013 Report Posted March 26, 2013 Sailed there in my windsurf days, fine in an easterly :-) http://i474.photobucket.com/albums/rr108/si-fly/Screenshot_2013-03-26-15-05-32.png Si. Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2 Quote
Silveringsurfer Posted March 26, 2013 Report Posted March 26, 2013 As Si says it's fine there if any east in the direction. East is on or cross on to the beach. It's the best direction as no real obstructions for a few miles so the wind is cleaner. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Quote
Maro Posted March 26, 2013 Report Posted March 26, 2013 I'm gonna be that way for the weekend too, Im pretty sure I had a session at that spot last summer. Quote
Andy C Posted March 26, 2013 Report Posted March 26, 2013 Know where I'm gonna be this weekend now, thanks! Quote
boardbuilder Posted March 27, 2013 Author Report Posted March 27, 2013 Cheers guys, that really helps as new to the area. Heading down to the area on this thur-mon, give us a shout is you see a big old 15m peter lynn mattress flying or a bright pink and black GK 9m. Hope to see you all out there Cheers Quote
si-fly Posted March 29, 2013 Report Posted March 29, 2013 Don't want to put u off, but best check how much tide you need as they are big tides this weekend and the rip at low water will be strong! You may need to be there early and then its very cold!! I was out fishing this am, it was nice and sunny but -5 at 6.15 am Si. Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2 Quote
