The learning curve.... how long did it take to get up and planing?

Hi All,

Out of interest, how long did it take everyone to get up and planing for any decent distance?

I am relatively new to Kitesurfing, but have been flying foils and buggying for a while. Had two Kitesurf lessons ages ago and been out on the water another 3 occasions on my own kit (3 x 2hr sessions).

Was out yesterday and its the first time I have managed to get up fully on the board and plane.

Im loving that I progress each time.... but just wondered.... is there a point where 'the penny drops' and all of a sudden you are away?

It only ever seems to be me and my mate (at a similar stage) that are bobbing about in the water for 2 hrs that are at the learning stage ! (maybe other newbies are not willing to risk the November water temps!)

Anyone got any amazing tips that will get me bombing up and down in no time ?

Just be interesting to hear how others got on. (I realise its going to be massively varied, dependant on peoples previous experience etc etc)

Cheers in advance for any info.

+1 yeah keep going! If you can hook up with kiters who have been kiting for a while they will make sure you're rigging the right size kite & going out at the right state of tide.

other than that, I think most beginners (who are confident with the kite) find it easier to get going on the board with a bit more power. Its just easier if you don't have to work the kite whilst you work out the board.

hi mate

i kite with 2 guys who are just about planning in 1 direction, i advised them that most of the time their kite was too high which makes it very difficult to keep balance and lean agaist the kite to enable you to edge properly, it seemed to help them.

Just to sound like a right smart-arse, I was up and planeing on my first proper session. I put that entirely down to landboarding experience, so I'd suggest getting a landboard.....less chilly at this time of year too.

Other than that, when launching keep your trailing foot tucked right under your bum, and don't carve back too hard when you get up. If you carve too hard you'll lose all power from the kite and sink again, don't worry about staying up-wind to start with, get moving first and then you can start experimenting with how far back you can lean!

I had lessons on holiday and flailed around like an idiot ...

First session back home was almost up and planing, next session it clicked ...

There will be a certain point where it just snaps and you get the balance right and the right dive of the kite, angle of board etc, and.from then on you've got it ...turning.round is easy, just edge hard, drift the kite over the top after your edging has slowed you down, then dive kite and ride out of a successful transition ... You can then progress to jump transitions, toeside, Downloops, etc etc

Definately agree landboarding is a massive help, probably why I was up and away and jumping on water pretty quick, also a massive help with transitions (turning round)

Basically yeah, there comes a.point a few sessions in when it clicks perfect, and you're away ... Like riding a bike without stabilisers and suchlike

I had two days tuition at the end of october, a day body dragging and learning some kite control and a few attempts at board starts the next day before the wind dropped right off. Since then i have got out most weekends sharing a kite with friends to gain confidence before putting our own up. Over the weekend it just clicked, i dont know if it was a case of the conditions being just right but it was brilliant and im fully looking forward to the weekend to make sure it wasnt a fluke :)
