Well,

The trend when I left Skool was 2Tone, the scar era was 'In & happening', So the dress prerequisites were:

Doc Martins, the larger the number of eyelets you had the cooler you were!

Donkey or crombie Jacket, with tartan insides (executive or what).

My brothers time was spoon shoes and high waisted trousers, 4 buttons I think.

Well that's age for you.

Don't let these other posters (above) put you off, if this question was asked by another (G) the responders wouldn't have been so insulting in their replies.

Oh I forgot

Bondage trousers and a mohair jumper (thanks Gran) for the Punk era

- School Cap,

- Black blazer with school badge on the top pocket that had Labor Omnia Vincit written below the school insignia

- Grey trousers

- School (black & white striped) tie

- White or grey shirt

- White or grey pullover (allowed in winter).

- Black boring shoes

- Grey or black socks

The school cap was the biggest nuisance right from the beginning. The cap badge was metal with the school insignia hard enameled on to it. Part of the initiation process on 1st years mainly perpetrated by the second and some 3rd years was to smash the enamel on the cap badge after the initiation which was having your head stuffed down the toilet or similar nastiness. The smashed enamel badge indicated that you had been through your initiation process. Bloody stupid I know but that’s what it was like in our all boys' school for grammar school education in London back in the mid 50’s to early 60’s.

Later wearing the same stupid cap at say aged 16 meant carrying it in my pocket & putting it on the back of the head to enter the school gates.

No cap meant one black point. Two black points meant up to two hours detention on Wednesday night copying out the Bible.

Occasionally, I would be seen by a bullying prefect bustling with school responsibility who would see me on my way to school without the cap on my head. The barsteward would recognize me & would arrange a halfway contribution to my next detention.

My school had about 300 boys but we were always the same 25 to 30 boys neatly copying the Holy Scriptures every Wednesday night.

It was strictly forbidden to talk when changing classrooms & this is where I picked up most of my black points.

Cowboy type ben sherman shirt, drainpipe rupert bear trousers, flouresent socks with black bands, either lumberjack boots or Royals (shoe) with segs placed so they protruded a bit from the toe and fishtail parka. OH and black eye most weeks, all boys school with teachers who weren't afraid to put the boxing gloves on (preffered method of discipline over the cane for the male staff). Except for one science teacher who had two pieces of wood, 3ft piece called captain kirk and a 2ft piece called mr spock. All noobs always went for the shorter spock (which was a solid piece of oak and stunned the recipient, kirk was pine and not as bad).:)

ours was the same era and dress as Captain Chaos but also at school to comply with school dress code, whilst still iritating the teachers, was to make your tie as short as possible whilst making the knot as fat as possible. I also recall we also had a punk in our year that had the triple mohican and got suspended for dying it black blond and green, his defence was that at least he stuck to scool colours! hahahaha, thanks for the stroll down memory lane.

Glad we don't live in such a violent society anymore!

Don't we? Can't remember regular stabbings and shootings among the youth of my day coupey, no drugs either. We took our punishment, (and gave it) still respected the teachers and got on with life. Right off my soap box now:)

Forgot the school initiation for 1st year noobs-head shoved down bog, then taken to boot hill at the back off the school (on top of which was a raised metal drain cover). Iff you didn't struggle they could throw you over the cover and down the steep hill, struggle and you landed on the cover. Come first snow just when you thought it was safe-part two-cornered by the gym and pelted with well compressed snow (ice) balls.

Did anyone get to play murder ball at their school?:) This was a 1970's thing at our school. It was played with a medicine ball and two opposing teams in the gym. The idea was to get the ball and touch the opposing teams wall with it (within a 5ft square box painted on the wall). Two rules, no biting and no hair pulling. Ball could be kicked, iff you wanted broken toes or more common picked up. It could be used to smash into your opponents face, kicking and punching were allowed between the tackler and the one with the ball, fantastic game.

I've been a teacher for eight years, and never seen any such violence at all. The eighties were a bit like that I suppose (Grange Hill and all that) but although there will be hotspots, most schools aren't like that.

As for drugs, I ain't so sure, those Beatles, punk floydd, the doors, bix Beiderbecke, sherlock holmes, the opium wars, viking shamans, nothing new about that. And as for knife crime, we have nothing on the Tudors, with their 3 foot long knives.

Sorry, I just feel that this generation of young people get a bad press and are labelled as thugs because they have hoodies etc, whilst we glorify counter-culture (punks, bovver boys, casual violence in schools) of the 70s and 80s. Those of us who were a little bit "different" in our yoof should stand up for young people of today who dress as emos, moshers, hoodies etc, the vast majority of whom are great human beings (if a little self-obsessed)! Every time we say how bad they are (like last week's survey that found that 48% of people think young people are becoming like animals) we just alienate them further.

Sorry about the thread hijack. That's me on my soapbox too!

Point well made, I was refering to the general populace with regard to the increased violence and not in anyway commenting at what happens at schools. Me too- sorry for the hijack.

+1 for ramjam and coupey.

Back on topic, it was wide collars and fat ties when I started, and small collars and skinny ties by the time I left.

What, you had your's on the thin side then?
