hi,

i'm new to the sport (kite landboarding). i'm 15 and weight around 70kg. i'm looking to buy an upgrade from my 3.5m kite and live in an area with reasonably low wind speeds on average. I was thinking around 7 metres, any recommendations? do you think this would be big enough/too small and if not what size/kite would you recommend? I see people with huge kites up there and wonder how they do it, if i were to buy a harness and bar would this make it easier to control and safer than just using handles?

Thanks, Alec

Hey mate, I'm going to answer all your threads in one on here to make it easier.

Firstly- don't modify your bar, it will lose a lot of structural integrity by drilling a hole through it and leave you in danger. You're far better off to sell the bar and get a depower bar properly and be safe.

Secondly, I strongly recommend you don't buy/use that 7m rhino- it's a very advanced kite that will quite frankly scare the shit out of you as it it very fast and unforgiving. Please dont think I'm being a grumpy old man and dont know what I'm on about and am being pathetic... I've seen people who think they know better than experienced kiters and buy a kite that's way out of their league and have got seriously hurt- one guy i know broke his back...

Your better off going for something like a depower foil, arc or bow kite. I definitely think you should try out an arc- a venom for example. They're great kites that are very user friendly and have awesome performance- and you can get them for under 200 quid which is ridiculous. At your weight you definitely want to be looking at a:

13m arc (they have to be bigger as they are a different shape to other flatter kites- hence the name..)

9.5m foil kite (I had a flexi sabre 2 at your age and weight and was great- however Ozone Frenzies are more kite for the money)

12m Hybrid/ bow.

Seeing as you've only flown a 3.5m fixed bridle, you'll find an lei and huge hassle in setting up and landing so you're best with an arc or Depower foil.

Speak to any local guys you can and try as many kites as you can- you'll learn alot instead of buying crap of the internet that you dont know anything about...

If there's anything that you dont understand I'll be happy to help.

Pre 2004 frenzies aren't great mate.

You're looking too small! Especially if you have less win than most. Depower foils have less power per square meter. Look for a 9.5 mate, trust me ;)

Ozone Manta 1 10 Metre Depower Complete on eBay (end time 10-Dec-10 18:10:43 GMT)

Peter Lynn 12M Phantom De-powerable Traction Kite. on eBay (end time 13-Dec-10 19:00:51 GMT)

Ebay's looking a bit dry at the mo mate... Its the wrong time to buy being near to christmas and all...

Both of those kites would be great- just dont pay 250 for the phantom- get as close to 200 as possible.

I would sell you my venom but i love it too much!

Stop trying to buy kites! Read reviews and watch videos- all you'll do is make the wrong decision.

List of no go's:

Any kite from a bloody supermarket (dont be a douchebag now..)

Pansh

Radsails

Any kite older than 2004 .

Oh and have you bought this rhino?

lol ...... for your first depower alec i'd reccomend a foil of some kind ....... around the 10m mark and start off with it in low wind ....... any foil by ozone will be fine ..... frenzy or manta for lift ..... access for no lift

or a peter lynn arc , dont matter which one ...... 13 -16m

buy it ready to fly as you cant mix and match bars

as for fixed bridle then anything flexifoil , ozone , peter lynn .......... around the 5m - 7m

personally i started on a 3.5 rage ... went up too a 5m then a 7m the 9m ...... i then went depower and settled on the kites listed below

and read the advice given carefully on here , dubstep is trying to help

It's funny, you give people advice and yet it still has to be repeated for them to listen...

I think he wants a depower but has no idea what one really is.

That 10m manta would great for you Alec. Don't be intimidated by the size, as I said before they have less power than fixed bridles- but far more performance.

You do realise you need to get a harness? Before you start a thread about that- go and try some kites and get off ebay!! You'll just waste your money on shit kites.

Where do you live?
