martincooke Posted October 9, 2010 Report Posted October 9, 2010 How do i set up parental settings, basically to stop my 14 yr old step son accessing porn sites, some very untoward sites in my history box this morning:mad: Quote
unsub Posted October 9, 2010 Report Posted October 9, 2010 Who is your ISP ? Virgin media include a parental control in their Anti Virus software. Also, if you have a router you can block sites and restrict internet access at certain times.. You could try this > http://www.parentalcontrolbar.org/ But knowing most kids of today it wont be long before they find a work around !! Quote
Funky Posted October 9, 2010 Report Posted October 9, 2010 Rofl let him look at them bless, we all love porn! Quote
eazyrider Posted October 9, 2010 Report Posted October 9, 2010 Times have changed! In my day you would go looking for your dads porn stash under the bed or in the wardrobe, at least you now know what side he bats for Or is that what the face was for? Quote

You can use Windows Live Family Safety to turn on additional controls such as web filtering, recording who they see and talk to online etc. Or, best bet is to buy something like Net Nanny which is regarded as one of the best content filtering bits of software. You might also find that your Antivirus suite may have some content restriction stuff built in. My son is only allowed to get to CBeebies and Milkshake web sites... but then he is only 3! ...but dont let age fool you... he is quite capable of opening my wife's laptop - switching it on - clicking his name - typing in his password and opening CBeebies web site on his own! martincooke Posted October 10, 2010 Author Report Posted October 10, 2010 the problem here isnt the porn, its the sort of porn hes looking at, think lassie and black beauty!!!!!! Quote
Capt Slog Posted October 11, 2010 Report Posted October 11, 2010 Rofl let him look at them bless, we all love porn! But what you could access at 14 is long way different from what he access now! It's the ease of it too, I'll bet you were lucky to get your hands on a few magazines as Bigbud says? perhaps a video that you could watch if your parents weren't around? Quote
Sir Posted October 13, 2010 Report Posted October 13, 2010 Netnanny seems to be the most popular Martin. But also check out your isp as they should have some form of parental control too :-) Quote
high.as.a.kite Posted October 13, 2010 Report Posted October 13, 2010 Another route is to use a censored DNS provider. (OpenDNS > FamilyShield) If he figures how to get around that then create an 'Admin' account and lock down the registry settings for IE\Firefox. If he gets past that then push him towards a good IT Security degree course! Quote
The Geoff Posted October 13, 2010 Report Posted October 13, 2010 (edited) Another route is to use a censored DNS provider. (OpenDNS > FamilyShield) If he figures how to get around that then create an 'Admin' account and lock down the registry settings for IE\Firefox. If he gets past that then push him towards a good IT Security degree course! 1: Download Ubuntu. 2: Burn it to a CD or USB stick. 3: Reboot. Now he's got around anything that you've done in Windows, any net nanny type software, in fact anything as far as the router. And you'll have no way of knowing whatsoever. So, the solution: talk to him. By all means, don't make it easy (censored DNS via the router settings would be my choice), but better to socially engineer your way around the problem. Oh, and bear in mind that he might have been looking at something relatively normal (well, legal at least) and the history is from pop-ups and the like that he wasn't purposefully looking for. Oops! My bad! Thanks for catching that The Geoff. I had actually meant to say about putting the censored DNS settings into the router. Guess my brain had already jumped to how to stop him circumventing before my fingers had received the orders to type the suggestion! Love the Linux workaround. Hmmm ..... Boot and run Linux from a USB flash memory stick | USB Pen Drive Linux! Though I would suggest that the youngster is probably not that technically advanced considering he failed to clear his history after browsing. Quote
The Geoff Posted October 13, 2010 Report Posted October 13, 2010 Porn is a great educational motivator Of course, you could block Linux sites using a net nanny type program, but that's well down the road of solving the wrong problem Quote
RaggedRoy Posted October 13, 2010 Report Posted October 13, 2010 If you block or restrict access, he will find his way around it by proxy servers. If you leave it open and don’t make a big fuss you will at least be able to keep an eye on what he is looking at. Turn it into a joke with him and let him know what is normal and not. Quote
