Yup. Easiest way is to have Windows on the system first, then install ubuntu. Download it, burn it to a CD, DVD or USB stick, plug in and away you go.

Generally, yes, it's easy to use. There are a few differences you need to get used to, like installing applications for example - all of the "approved" apps are in a central library, you just boot up the software centre, pick the ones you want and click "install". Takes some getting used to, but it's not actually difficult once you're used to it

didnt they discontinue Ubuntu netbook? is that basically vanilla ubuntu running unity?

a fun project, have a play with archlinux.. rolling updates and i've got my hard disk encrypting and decrypting on the fly as i access it!

I installed Ubuntu on a EEEPC 901 after the SSD failed (was running XP), and it installed and ran up fine. Found all the hardware, even wireless & camera. Its a lot quicker booting up and running than XP ever was.

Could this be an option on my parents eeepc?

It came pre installed with home premium and is like watching paint dry!

Will Ubuntu run any faster or just make windows worse?

Have a look here:

Alternative downloads | Ubuntu

Half way down the page under 10.04LTS for the netbook version. I'm running this on an Acer Aspire one as the only OS. I go from off to wireless connected in about 25 seconds, which includes entering the password on my user account. Worked straight up from the install with nothing not working.

If you're worried about 'The Olds' not liking it you can flip the desktop from the standard UNR desktop shown further up to one that resembles Windaz.

I've been running UNR one the Acer for about 3 years with no problems at all.
