eyesfromthedark Posted August 1, 2010 Report Posted August 1, 2010 Ok. So most people see something and think "that looks like so much fun, I would really like to give that a go!" No one is born amazing at something. We all start off in pretty much the same starting point. Now me for example. Haven't been flying kites for to long and certainly haven't kite surfed until sunday (31/07), but surely if I can keep my kite out of other peoples way and steer clear of them to try and not upset anyone then more experienced flyers can do the same and exercise some self control when it comes to keeping there mouth shut and not start gobbing off to someone who is clearly trying things for the first time, so to make their experience a little more enjoyable? If you were at watergate bay on this date flying a blue and orange flysurfer you know who you are. Thats it, rant over. Please correct me if I have this wrong in any way. Quote
gjpo1 Posted August 1, 2010 Report Posted August 1, 2010 Something I picked up from the forum a while ago is that it is always a good idea to introduce yourself to the regular users of a place and enquire as to the rules and etiquette that apply there. Having said that, some people are just twats and best avoided. Best of luck on your adventures but being a relative newbie myself, I found the above to be sound advice. Fly Safe Quote
eyesfromthedark Posted August 1, 2010 Author Report Posted August 1, 2010 Thank you for the advice gjp01. Its good advice as well as I understand its polite not to rock up and start treading on toes of other regular users. And on that particular day both my friend and I were very polite as always. had good conversations with other kitsurfers and buggy users. It was just a shame that that one incident happened thats all. But again thank you for your good advice! Quote
Batz Posted August 1, 2010 Report Posted August 1, 2010 We have a couple of buggiers like that where I fly a lot. Anyone who looks new or shakey in skills or having a hard time they will buzz and give grief to. I pissed all over them all day yesterday, they then borrowed my blade, 'fixed' the setup cos I had it wrong (hmmmmmmm cocks) and then complained it was crap. I returned iot to how i had it set and pissed all over them again LMAO! Thing is they are dickheads, everywhere has them. Best just to ignore them. Quote
Notyetnamed Posted August 1, 2010 Report Posted August 1, 2010 Never had the problem, Tho I would prefer for the "complete newbs" to a get a little grief if it looks like there about to hit someone or will do. Speaking off that a few foil kites nearly flew into me yesterday because people took them out when it was too windy for there experience and got ripped out there hands. Quote
Batz Posted August 1, 2010 Report Posted August 1, 2010 ANYONE should be given a doing if they are out of control. but there is a 100~% difference between struggling safely and being a tit. Viva la Weasel? Quote
Sgt.Pilko Posted August 1, 2010 Report Posted August 1, 2010 dont take it to heart eyes from the dark best thing to do is just do your thing and ignore the dickheads as batz puts it keep cool Quote
Notyetnamed Posted August 1, 2010 Report Posted August 1, 2010 there is a 100~% difference between struggling safely and being a tit. Of course, But sometimes people can get offended just by a bit of friendly advice Isn't that best solution to just say your fine and if they continue to "help" you then just tell them in a friendly way to p*ss off. Batz Posted August 1, 2010 Report Posted August 1, 2010 I don't think the guy in question was helping. Quote
eyesfromthedark Posted August 1, 2010 Author Report Posted August 1, 2010 All good. as a noob I can take any constructive criticism that comes my way. And I try to get the right kite out so i am not overpowered and so i can control it so i dont get in anyones way. Its my responsibility to control my kite and no one elses right? if I cant do that then i deserve a slating. and thats me as a noob, so surely an experienced flyer can give me the space im trying more than hard to give them. but as i said rant over. Thanks for the support all. Quote
Dragnfly Posted August 2, 2010 Report Posted August 2, 2010 What was it that he was yelling at you? Any particular words of wisdom or things he thought you were doing wrong? Quote
Bigbud Posted August 2, 2010 Report Posted August 2, 2010 Was it fairly on shore ? Were you waiting in the shallows with your kite at the zenith and people couldn't get past you ? The amount of newb's that do it and also foil flyers !! Just cos its got auto zenith you don't have to stand there having a chat with it over your head fucking up the lagoons for everyone else ! Carry on Quote
heres jonny Posted August 2, 2010 Report Posted August 2, 2010 blue and orange flysurfer? never seen one of them :L as for people shouting....fuck em...they started somewhere too, as long as you dont just sit in the water with your kite vertically above you at all times making it impossible for people to go round you then theres no problem...kitesurfing at Camber Sands is a mission as its usually pretty busy, but us people who can get upwind and riding comfortably can dodger and weave around, but once a newb stays still laying in the water with theire kite at 12 o clock it screws the entire place up, especially when theres loads of them...luckily the local kite schools stay upwind out the way, but it can get annoying with people who just turn up and try right in the middle of the water were riding on... eyesfromthedark Posted August 2, 2010 Author Report Posted August 2, 2010 The guy was actually from what i could tell deliberatly getting in our way by cutting us up and then laughing and muttering under his breath; Fukin noobs. Me and my mate picked a quiet spot on the shore. We were in the shallows but no one was up wind which is why we picked the spot. There was no one behind us and if anyone came to close to us then we made sure that we would give them space. the kite was constantly moving, not just at the zenith. Im gonna guess if it was a different day we would have upset no one, just bad luck or something! Quote

Carry on Jeez, how this rings true. Probably why I have a dislike for so many pig ignorant land boarders. The kites at the zenith or nearly, they power up and jump without a glance either way; you've gotta go 30 mtres upwind or bear off to get past them & then they do one of those tail grabs and land bang where you're going. Personally I find them a zillion times more pain than noobs on the water. Me included. Quote
Andy-j Posted August 2, 2010 Report Posted August 2, 2010 Just ignore them!! as long as you are doing what you think is right to stay out of peoples way then they cant really slate you. The thing is, what you might be doing might be wrong, thats when they should give you constructive criticism. We all learn from our mistakes right!? also, +1 for what big bud says. mick, thankfully no landboarders at my local spots.. sometimes at st andrews but the place is huge so not usually an issue. bartiebat1599968741 Posted August 2, 2010 Report Posted August 2, 2010 This is such a skier v snowboarder thread! Different equipment flies differently and noobs always get in the way when all they're actually trying to do is stay out of the way (often by not moving their kite & keeping it at zenith!) - it's no-ones position to have a go at them, they've got enough to deal with trying to fly the kite one handed & get the damn board on their feet without twizzling around! It's your job to go around them! On land, landboarders hate buggiers doing downwinders, buggiers hate landboarders jumping around them - you use the beach differently, that's all it is. As an arc flyer (yes I am more than capable to drop & lift my kite, but that wasn't the case when I was new as holding an arc at the edge of the window when youre new is actually really hard when all it wants to do is auto zenith!) I hate you with your annoying pumps ups you constantly crash into the sea right in my path!! hehe To the original poster, as long as you've had lessons (it sounds like you have quite a busy beach to need them) try not to let them get to you. You have just as much right to be there. Quote
Bigbud Posted August 2, 2010 Report Posted August 2, 2010 Hehe I wasn't having a general dig at foil riders just a couple of specific guys who were a PITA the other day ! Unfortunately when the beach's are busy there is always someone who jumps / turns / sits on the edge of the water in front of people and its frustrating for both newb's and everyone one else esp. when its low wind ! I was riding skim and wasn't really in control most of the time so I was the newb but if you crash, walking out to the water or about to turn have a look over your shoulder and keep your kite low Quote

BAD HOMBRE Posted August 2, 2010 Report Posted August 2, 2010 Hi EFTD. It may be of small comfort, to know that kite surfing is not the only sport, which suffers from this malase, I have had abuse hurled at me at 700ft, above a very crowded ridge, in the company of 40, yes 40 other paraglider pilots, even though i was sporting a 2ft lon red streamer, showing every other flier that i was a comparative novice, with less than 10hrs in the air. mandatory in paragliding. I was closer than i should have been when we passed each other, but the torrent of filth that i recieved was not kosha, "to quote Sir alan". Still i survived, and lived to fly another day.Keep yer pecker up sport!! Bad Hombre. Quote
