too much wind Posted August 3, 2010 Report Posted August 3, 2010 Since the BKSA negotiated bespoke coverage this year I very much doubt that is the case. Just checked their website and yes whilst providing cover for the same list of kiting activities and using the same company the BKSA insurance is over twice as expensive . So my mistake it is different. So perhaps the website is wrong? TMW Quote
Batz Posted August 3, 2010 Report Posted August 3, 2010 Ermm, yes i agree but i don't get your point, are you suggesting newbies don't need to get insurance? I also happen to agree that £15 is a drop in the ocean. TMW Bloody awkward southerners! LOL! No, but if they are flying a mates to try the sport thats ok. Once you buy a kite, get insurance. TBH i feel it's the rest of us that will suffer from the uninsured's actions. OK. I fly at a place that has a LOT of local dog walkers etc, SOME tend to try to get hit, or get in the way or be a pain, just cos they can (there are 3 or 4 that are known for it) I nearly hit one and dropped my kite which his dog promptly went for so i re launched scaring the dog and he came over shouting his mouth off. I very calmly showed him my insurance card. Then politely asked how he would pay for damages his dog caused if I hadn't re launched. Pissed on his bonfire a lot lol. Quote
jetskipricey Posted August 3, 2010 Report Posted August 3, 2010 When I got my BKSA insurance they gave me a bright orange band to stick on my harness- which being a good boy I did! A quick check yesterday on other peoples harnesses - not one! Makes you wonder if the lovely chap on the board next to you will be paying for your time off work with his own hard earned! Worrying? How many of you are insured? i have the same bright red / orange label but i dont put it on my harness , but i am insured. i did put last years one on but it faded and kept falling apart. Quote
paulie_amoose Posted August 3, 2010 Report Posted August 3, 2010 Oh, so sorry my tired mind put an extra N in there. My apologies. People are insistent because all it takes is 1 accident. Especially 1 with a kiter with no insurance to close a beach or park to everyone. Seems sensible to me. But do you honestly believe that just becuase that person is insured that it will stop the beach being closed. No chance, they wont look at the insurence aspect at all, all that matters is that a 3rd party was badly injured and that will be enough to close it down. Just becuase your covered enough to pay for the 3rd parties care doesnt make everything ok amd it;s fine to casue an injury. The reason that insurence is touted as must at some spots is to remove any liabity from the site owner and not to protect the spot for us kiters after an accident. If you employ a bit of common sence there should be no real need for insurance, dont kite on crowded holiday maker beach, dont set up upwind of family picnic ect ect. Look at the cost of the premium, £30 inculding BKSA membership. That's cheap so the risk of a payout for the insurence company must be pretty small meaning they dont percieve the risk as great. My "local" spot is so deserted that I sometimes dont see another human being, if I only kited there then insurance wouldn't offer any value for money at all. The fact is your far more likely to get involved in a kiter on kiter accident. That in my mind is something completely different and I'm not even sure how sucessful your claim on your 3rd party insurence would be, so hard to prove liablity. Surely it would come down to one persons word against another? So I really dont buy into this "NO INSURANCE, GET OFF THE BEACH" melarky. It really is down to the individual to decide, as long they don't kite on beaches where in insurance is compolsory and they maintain some common sense I don't see an issue. You could even argue that the uninsured kiter with fear of being sued in an accident makes a safer kiter than the insured one riding around safe in the knowledge that any accident wont hurt his/hers wallet. All this said.. I will be renewing my insurance this week... Quote
North Wind Posted August 3, 2010 Report Posted August 3, 2010 Reminds me of the cyclist who told my Uncle he was in favour of doing away with seatbelts with cars and putting a 4 inch spike in the centre of steering wheels instead. Reckoned people would slow down. Quote
paulie_amoose Posted August 3, 2010 Report Posted August 3, 2010 As a cyclist I agree with him.... also install an electrod in the left nipple of all drivers that actives when they use the left indicator and forces them to quickly look in the left hand mirror... Quote
reecey Posted August 3, 2010 Report Posted August 3, 2010 I've got insurance, always have and wouldn't fly with out it. I've got my insurance number on both my boards. Quote
noggin Posted August 3, 2010 Report Posted August 3, 2010 YOU! don't have insurance when you take membership with any kiting association, you have insurance COVER!! the policy is held by the association not you!! That's how it only cost a small amount!! Trust me, you wouldn't want to pay for it all yourself!! In Scotland we mainly don't need to have insurance to fly, but like to think we can be responsible kite flyers!! Glad some on here don't live up here!!! Quote

mattdez Posted August 4, 2010 Report Posted August 4, 2010 I am not aware of any third party liability claims resulting from a kiter-kiter collision. There has been a claim on BKSA insurance from a kiter-hits-car claim. And there were two first party claims resulting from kiter-hard object claims. Plenty of other third party liability claims in other sports though. Best thing is to avoid situations that lead to claims. If there is a big claim on a BKSA policy then I am afraid that premiums will likely go up substantially .... insurance is like that as we all know. BA Thanks, that goes to show that its not pointless and is worth having! Quote
North Wind Posted August 4, 2010 Report Posted August 4, 2010 And someone has been in touch to say there was a kiter-kiter claim (for loss of earnings) in 2005. Didn't know about that as it was before I got involved. Quote
Andy-j Posted August 4, 2010 Report Posted August 4, 2010 Just renewed through bksa.. i get £10,000 if i die.. how does that work? lol Quote
