_Geordie_ Posted November 22, 2009 Report Posted November 22, 2009 I drove over the bridge at cockermouth (Papcastle) yesterday and couldn't believe how bad it was - I've seen that flood plain flooded before but nothing ever like this - the pictures and stuff you see on the news just don't give the sense of scale and power of the water. The amount of debris dispersed as the water enters the flood plain just west of the papcastle bridge is unbelievable - looks like the contents of the towns houses have been washed down the river. Took us 5 hours to get back from Newcastle yesterday as every bridge on the derwent is closed now (even papcastle). This means to get over the derwent you have to go round the back of bass lake - that was closed last night though so we had to go my Caldbeck and Mungrisdale. Scotty - would definately not like to kite on that flood plain the water is moving super, super fast and is just full of debris - I was really shocked when I saw it. Didn't spot anything we could have kited on in areas that are safe - I know its been done before but deffo not appropriate up there - there may be some fields isolated further south. All the bridges are out with another to colapse - it means North Workington is cut off from the south which is the main part of town - its gonna cause problems before long - people without cars are going to be in trouble for basic things before long, presciptions etc etc. Our condolences go to the family of the policeman (he had four kids) who died trying to stop people crossing the bridge - if it wasn't for him more lives would have be lost. Not good man, not good, its a full on disaster zone, make no mistake about it. Quote
