DesRes Posted September 20, 2009 Report Posted September 20, 2009 (edited) Hey Peeps, Am running in the GSR, 25th October 2009. Here's the link to my justgiving page. Whatever you can spare eh? It's a worthy cause, especially when you participate in a sport where much of the kit is imported and carried on ships. (I'm a kitesurfer BTW) http://www.justgiving.com/AndySmithRunsForSeafarersUK/ Thanks in advance.... Edited September 30, 2009 by DesRes Quote

DesRes Posted September 25, 2009 Author Report Posted September 25, 2009 I thought the link would explain everything.... I'm running for "SeafarersUK". SeafarersUK is an organisation that raises funds and issues grants to over 70 different UK maritime based charities. They direct the monies to where it is needed most. Did you ever wonder how your kit arrived at the beach before you parted with your hard earned cash? Over 90% of our imports travel by sea, on ships, run by seafarers. I am one of those, one of the lucky ones, decent pay, decent leave, stable homelife. The same cannot be said for all. The fishing industry is considered to be one of the most dangerous jobs to have, families are left devastated through injuries, sickness and bereavement. Some shipping companies are not as good at looking after their employees as mine. Poor conditions, long trips and with the economic downturn many ships have been laid up. Others have even been abandoned in port by their owners, leaving the crews with the ship. There are retired seaman who need care in their old age, SeafarersUK helps. This month it is 30 years since I started at sea. For me it has been a good career and long may it continue. This run and raising funds for SeafarersUK is my way of "giving a little back". Please help me make it a success. Quote

DesRes Posted October 30, 2009 Author Report Posted October 30, 2009 Got back from Portsmouth yesterday, spent a few days camping after the run last Sunday. What a day out! Anyone see the race on Channel 5? Not a bad race for myself but the wind slowed everyone down, the last two miles were along the prom into a 20 knotter. I did it in 66 mins 48 secs, and came in at 199th position. There were 21,000 running so not bad for a old fart eh? Thanks to all that have sponsored me, my page account is still open if anyone else feels like shelling out. See you on the beach. Quote
