FO Kite Posted May 30, 2009 Report Posted May 30, 2009 So what is it ............... legal protection?? Not sure if I've ever used it, but now it seems to be an add on in most policies so what does it do? Quote
braddels Posted May 30, 2009 Report Posted May 30, 2009 i believe it pays any legal fees you may encounter if a claim occurs (up to a certain sum). with direct line it includes if you are hit by an unisured driver i think Quote
Bertie Posted May 30, 2009 Report Posted May 30, 2009 i was wondering the same recently. its an extra £25 that i cant be arsed with tbh Quote
Afro1599968737 Posted May 30, 2009 Report Posted May 30, 2009 if you crash and the other person wants to sue for mental / emotional damage & trauma ect ect, you are protected (ie the insurers will pay up if they win) well worth having Quote
Draggin Posted May 30, 2009 Report Posted May 30, 2009 Stick the following line into google and read car insurance legal cover There plenty of info from most of the top insurers Tim Quote
festa Posted May 30, 2009 Report Posted May 30, 2009 with the no win no fee brigade out there now there is no need for it as such but you do need to make sure you usea reputable firm Quote
iant84 Posted May 30, 2009 Report Posted May 30, 2009 Get it. It is completely worth it. I was hit by an uninsured driver and it was a ridiculous amount of hassle to sort out without legal cover. If you are found to be at fault in an accident it could come and bite you in the ass without legal cover. Quote
braddels Posted May 30, 2009 Report Posted May 30, 2009 for the extra £25 is it really worth not having? Quote
Capt Slog Posted May 31, 2009 Report Posted May 31, 2009 Yes, well worth having. It can save you an enormous amount of leg-work regards sorting out a claim, and even when BOTH drivers are properly insured, the other side can kick up a fuss and start taking you to court. And often all he arranging of quotes etc. for damage assesment. I've always had it since I was in the brokers one time and there was someone there who didn't have it and they were having explained to them what they had to do to sort out their claim. The couple were quite agrieved when they were told that for £15 (at the time) they could have someone else do all this. I guess with "high end" insurers it is needed, but if you're going budget and it's an option, take it. Quote
SandMonster Posted May 31, 2009 Report Posted May 31, 2009 If you are a member of a trade union (such as Unite) you may find you already have legal cover. Also some forms of membership of the AA & RAC also include legal assistance. As do some credit cards & bank accounts. Its best to check if you're already covered in some way before shelling out again. Tho they never point that out to you when they're taking your money - robbing barstewards the lot of 'em! I have seen some advice that you don't really need it, as good solicitors will usually take on a case they think they can win on a no-win no-fee basis. A good insurance company should sort out all the arranging of quotes etc. themselves. Certainly Direct Line, General Accident, Esure all have done in my experience over the last 25 years or so. That's not what legal assistance is for as I understand it. Quote
andrewjohn Posted May 31, 2009 Report Posted May 31, 2009 If the accident is not your fault it's not needed. BUT, if the accident is your fault and you are found to be neglagent in any way then it should cover your legal costs. Although, not sure if it'll cover criminal neglagent, i.e drink driving or other motoring offences you could get sent down for. Quote
Sand-Yeti Posted June 1, 2009 Report Posted June 1, 2009 for the extra £25 is it really worth not having? For those people driving around like pr@ts causing accidents it's a very good cover. Quote
Red Panda Posted June 2, 2009 Report Posted June 2, 2009 As some one who used to work in the industry I would say avoid these no win no fee companies like the plague. Legal cover is worth the money if you want your insurance company rather than you fight your cause in a fault incident. Especially if there are injuries involved. They will appoint a solicitor for you and deal with everything without having to involve you too much. They will not cover you in a criminal case but for civil issues it is well worth the money. SandMonster Posted June 7, 2009 Report Posted June 7, 2009 Legal cover is worth the money if you want your insurance company rather than you fight your cause in a fault incident. Especially if there are injuries involved. Shouldn't they do that anyway - isn't that what 3rd party cover is all about? Quote
GaRRy Posted June 7, 2009 Report Posted June 7, 2009 Legal cover is worth the money if you want your insurance company rather than you fight your cause in a fault incident. Especially if there are injuries involved. Shouldn't they do that anyway - isn't that what 3rd party cover is all about? I wish. Im having fun with Norwich Union at the moment where the other party will not admit responsibilty and their insurance company is claiming 50/50 and norwich are saying that unless i can get them to give in that is what they will do and it will be up to me to go via small claims court to get this over ridden (to keep my no claims). Oh and the legal cover wont help me either. This is now the second time norwich union have done absolutely nothing to fight my corner (they seem happy to go 50/50 and clobber my NCD as if they all do that the only losers are the poor suckers not at fault). Just renewd my insurance and guess who I didnt insure with Quote
SandMonster Posted June 7, 2009 Report Posted June 7, 2009 Oh and the legal cover wont help me either. so its not for that then...which was my point originally? Quote
GaRRy Posted June 7, 2009 Report Posted June 7, 2009 Oh and the legal cover wont help me either. so its not for that then...which was my point originally? As far as i can see it covers your legal costs if some one takes you to court Quote
SandMonster Posted June 7, 2009 Report Posted June 7, 2009 Obviously depends on the wording of your individual policy - I always thought it was for claiming your uninsured losses, eg your excess, loss of NCD, hire car & any personal injury when the accident isn't your fault. Funny how many different things people think it covers though. Quote
