Jackson d kiter Posted June 2, 2010 Report Posted June 2, 2010 He guys, im jackson and i am 13 and also brand new into the sport of kiteboarding. My home waters are the rivermouth of caloundre at happy valley/bullcock beach. to kite there there needs to be a ripping outgoing current directly out to the ocean with large waves ect. Im not 100% confident yet. and i would like some saffety tips to help me along thank you ...jackson Quote
SoutherlyBuster Posted June 3, 2010 Report Posted June 3, 2010 Welcome the to EK Jackson. Assuming you have little kiteboarding/kitesurfing experience, the location you describe sounds like a dissaster waiting to happen. Assuming you have had kite lessons from some one suitable qualified --- if you have not had this, do this first; I would ensure you are 100% confident kiting on flat water, no waves, no rips, no strong currents before enbarking on your proposed location. If you stuff up in the conditions you are proposing, and you will stuff up, we all did when we started out (and still occationally stuff up), you don't want to be in big waves and a current pulling you out to sea, this is a recipe for a drowning. How long have you been kitesurfing/kitboarding and under what conditions, ie wind strength, flat water or surf etc, onshore winds or offshore winds or crossshore winds? If you fill us in with a few more details we will be able to help you better. Regards, Norman. Quote
maigais Posted June 3, 2010 Report Posted June 3, 2010 I'd like to add that it's necessary to have PFD and be sure you can swim. Maybe once a week go swim at local pool, just to get good base. Maigais Quote
RALKITE Posted June 3, 2010 Report Posted June 3, 2010 Jackson d kiter. unconfuse me as to your age. in another thread you said- "Hay guys. I am planing to go on a holiday with my boys and daughter, to go kiteboarding except we don't know where to go. There are so many destinations worthy of being visited. So I am quite stuck here. Please help me choose!!!" Quote
plummet Posted June 3, 2010 Report Posted June 3, 2010 as above. but my suggestion is not kite in the rivermouth on an outgoing tide. go down the beach and kite on the beach in the waves. make sure you have beach downwind and go out in a cross on wind. yes it will be harder to learn through the waves. but not impossible (i had to... no flat water near me). then we it turns pear shaped you can self rescue back to the beach. Also don't go out nigel no mates. make sure theres other guys there that can possibly help if your in the poo. If you do venture out by yourself. stay close to shore. The general rule is don't go out further than you can swim back. Also make sure you know how to self rescue. if you don't learn. Quote

Jackson d kiter Posted June 3, 2010 Author Report Posted June 3, 2010 thanks SoutherlyBuster I have been kiteboarding for about 2 months and at caloundra, there is a side lagoon type thing next to the big current/passage that i practice in. the wind is durring summer mostly and around 14-20 south south east wind/b] coming streight off the ocean. cross onshore winds to be exact. i have practiced in mostly flat water with tiny little swell. nothing too big. I hope this is enough information for you to help me. jackson Quote
