MadMan1520 Posted August 19, 2008 Report Posted August 19, 2008 the first little gust when he went up 8 foot or so, i would have pulled the safety there.... gotta feel sorry for the guy though. Quote
Lem Posted August 19, 2008 Report Posted August 19, 2008 Oooow... that made me wince! Shame he didn't even attempt to go for his safety. Quote
Dominich Posted August 19, 2008 Report Posted August 19, 2008 Not easy to go for your safety when you get hit by a gust like that. Youre just waiting for the 1/2 a second in between gusts when you can pull it! Been on a C in gnarly conditions and got hit by a double gust (and have the scars to prove it) hence the move to bows. And yes I am getting old, thanks! Mind you, it wasn't quite gusting that hard!!! Quote
Duderino Posted August 19, 2008 Report Posted August 19, 2008 You dont get the points unless you land it !! Quote
Jofski Posted August 19, 2008 Report Posted August 19, 2008 awww man that is terrible.... I hope he is ok Quote
Goose1599968659 Posted August 19, 2008 Report Posted August 19, 2008 That was mental, I wanna hear about if he is ok..... no news report on that yet? Quote
jnicol Posted August 19, 2008 Report Posted August 19, 2008 there's was a different link to it on kiteforum There is a horrible urge to hold onto the bar, I think its an evolutionary instinct from our monkey roots, like holding onto a treebranch back in the jungle. It just powers the kite up like keeping the throttle open mid-crash. JUST let GO, sacrificing the steering will not make any difference once it's got that bad. Ive tried it both ways and letting go of the bar gives you the edge for survival - you may even have a tenth of a second after that to try for the safety but at least you've got both hands free to deal with things and your foot is off the accelerator, metaphorically speaking. My prayers go out to the dude in the video Quote

Siimon Posted August 19, 2008 Report Posted August 19, 2008 As said, it's easier said than done. I've had accidents (none as bad as that though) and you simply don't think quick enough to pull the safety. I mean, look at that vid. Even if he had thought quick enough, he wouldn't have even had the time to get his hands down to pull the safety. It all happens so fast. The best way to prevent these accidents is to judge the weather, yes, this was a gust, but it was also a hurricane. Either way, I hope he gets better. Fly safe guys. Quote
Willg54 Posted August 20, 2008 Report Posted August 20, 2008 scary thought....we were riding in the start of the storm "Fay" last week! Bugger! Quote
jnicol Posted August 21, 2008 Report Posted August 21, 2008 wot i said is LET GO of the bar, it depowers the kite. Fight the urge to hold on, you will be powering it up. Fk the safety, they usually jam when its booted that hard so LET GO and it depowers lots and you get 2 free arms to cope with the landing ie protect your head and neck, maybe pull the safety once the kite hits something. And notice how the other kite is nice and low and not killing its owner. GLad to hear hes regained conciousness. Peace Quote
kitefreek Posted August 21, 2008 Report Posted August 21, 2008 what the hell, just let go of the bar? in a crazy gust like that the amount of depower on any kite (even with long bar throw) isnt gonna be enough to stop you gettin rocket launched!! Quote
