  1. In answer to the Wind speed question, I have a G1 13m and a Lightwave 169 so have a little experience with that setup. Guess it all depends on your weight but I tend to get going from sort of 18mph upwards until about 25mph. Most fun about the 20 mph region (I weight about 13 1/2 st) I guess if you are learning though 15-18 mph might be a start to get the body dragging and waterstarts on the go. Then step it up a bit as you become more confident. - Not sure about the insurance question, but with regards to training I believe it is very useful and IMO the safest way to go. Good luck and safe flying...
  2. You may need to change your kite but don't give it up though man, Once you take some lessons you will be able to choose your equipment, conditions and spot safely and then you will have an awesome time. The safety aspect of kitesurfing is vital but once you have it sussed you should have an awesome time doing it. Hope it all works out for you mate - it's a massive high! Best of Luck -James
  3. Yeah I fly a G1 - 13m for a lot of the time but recently bought a 05 Vegas 16m with 5th line etc. Seems to work well with me, though it does take a few runs to get used to the Vegas after flying the Guerilla because the Vegas is so much faster. So that sure is nice, to pull out a bigger kite, in less wind and be rewarded with more turning speed! I suppose ideally one day i will go all LEI but I think it makes it fun flying different kites, probably makes you more adaptive. Will never lose the G though - its just so reliable and stable - and can't beat that on a gusty day.
  4. Surely though, by its very nature this thread has nothing to do with kiteboarding and is not staying on topic. It should therefore be deleted!
  5. When I was at University I built my own balance board system. It was constructed out of the following carefully selected materials: 1 x broken skateboard deck 1 x out of date 440 Ml can of John Smiths 1 x 13 stone person (me) - It was a short lived phenomenon that resulted in the inevitable conclusion of John Smiths being blasted all over my room. So if you'd rather have a room that smells like a brewery and naff all balance - then this is the system for you!
  6. Cheers for the replies so far. Very helpful stuff. - Think I will go ahead with the apartment in town idea, and drive to the beaches. Can't wait, it's gonna be awesome, can't believe that I'm excited already - I have over two and a half months to wait!! Thanks again James
  7. I know there have been some Tarifa threads before so sorry If i'm covering old ground. But I am headed out there in mid September for a week and just thought i'd get some advice from those who know. Firstly, what sort of area is best to stay? I have seen one nice looking place near Tarifa town (close to jungle beach) We are hiring a car and driving from Malaga, so I guess it's not too much hassle driving to best beach area every day? and probably better than walking to the beach and having to drive to the bars!? Which brings me onto, where is the best beach area that allows hire of Kitesurf and Windsurf stuff? I have looked at the Mistral Centre, are these guys good for hiring gear? Are there other cheaper/better ones? Any other advice anyone can think of is gratefully accepted. Thanks guys - James
  8. Noooooo... not fair. Am stuck at work!!
  9. I think it is perhaps down to the fact that board sports are very fashionable and cool. Snowboarding and skateboarding etc. With Kite landboarding people are given the opportunity to take part in a high adrenaline board sport in their own country. I think people are swayed by the marketing machine that is already busy at work promoting, Wakeboarding, Snowboarding, Kitesurfing etc. All popular boardsports, where as there is no such marketing for buggying. Having said all this, I do not wish to imply that boarding is all Hype, personally I think it is all deserved. Kiteboarding and (buggying for that matter) as we all know, is definately worth the hype.
  10. I've ridden one of the Leon Robbins boards downhill back to back next to the 2005 Comp 16 pro. For downhilling, there is no doubt that the Leon Robbins is a better board, much tighter and more precise than the 'standard' version. I wouldn't say that every bump threw me off the board, in fact I found it more stable at speed than the Comp 16, which i got speed wobble on where as on the Leon Robbins I did not. (BTW - I am not what you would call a good downhill boarder - rubbish would be a better word ) As for using with a kite, I don't know, I would prefer a little more flex on a kiteboard, but I certainly think if you do a bit of downhill aswell, then it's worth a look.
  11. Purley way in Croydon Area is all good - it's huge and plenty of other kiters there to keep you company.
  12. Yep - I have one of last years model aswell, is nice and comfy, good padding and clips and plenty of adjustment with back pad as well. Seems to be lasting well as well. Does the job very nicely
  13. I'm in East Grinstead if you know where that is (about 10 mins away from Gatwick Airport) Cool - so the Handle is pre-drilled? - that's good, just a case of buying the handle and screwing it on then?
  14. Cheers for all the help so far, I am based around South East England - West Sussex. I am leaning towards the Comp 6 because I am used to a smaller board and try to do more freestyle than cruising. So i think i'll check out one of these mountain board centres and have a play with the boards there. But i guess it's looking like the Comp 6 may be the way to go for me. I checked out the mbs web site and it had a sick grab handle on it, do you reckon that will be an option to have attached when it is released? and if so where from?
  15. Yep Lancing / Shoreham at 2 hours either side of low tide on a South Westerly is all good.
  16. Hi, I have decided that I am going to buy a new board in the next month or so and am very interested in the 2005 MBS range. I have been riding for about 3 years now and need something a little better than my current board (old & knackered - Lion Canyon). I have been looking at the Comp 16 pro and the Comp 6. My questions are as follows: 1) Is the extra length of the 16 going to make much of a difference to the stability of the board when compared to the 6? (bearing in mind I am used to a short board already) 2) Some times my feet make contact with the wheels as i go to toeside, am I going to get that with the shorter Comp 6? (size 10 feet) 3) Finally, so I can really decide, does anyone know where I can trial these boards in the South East of England? PS if it helps - I am 6', weigh 13 1/2 stone and usually ride a GI -13m
  17. I'd be very interested in hearing the answer to this question, as I go to the south of france a couple of times a year but have never kited down there. In particular the south coast is of interest to me. I have noticed in the summer you seem to get good sea breezes, so could be all good. In the past I have seen people Kitesurf at Toulon (not too far from the airport there)
  18. I started Kitesurfing using the helmet i use for landboarding. But the foam was quite spongy and took on a lot of water, so was a bit heavy and uncomfortable. But it did the job. I've got one of those Protec wake lids that someone mentioned earlier. -Is pretty good! PS - I used to landboard (still do) before learning kitesurfing, I found lessons useful. Lots of helpful safety advice etc. And got me up on the board real quick. - Cheers and good luck!
  19. I used to Kiteboard in Bristol on the Clifton Downs. I'm not sure of the rules there now though. And if the weather is nice it might get a bit busy. - But it's a nice piece of land
  20. Seems that Coca Cola have made a Kitesurfing advert - I found this link on the litewave website.... http://www.litewavedesigns.com/litewave_sam.wmv
  21. Bring on next weekend when the clocks go forward - Finally I can get out after work - and the number raises from 1 to as often as possible!
  22. I have sandboarded on some huge sand dunes in Puru, was quite a laugh, but it is a bit pants. If you were to do it I guess you might have more luck in the dry sand than the wet stuff. And wax up the board - that should get it moving. - The guys where we were used floor polish on the board, just slap it on and throw yourself down! I'd be interested in hearing if it worked though. But overall I guess you'd soon be giving up and reaching for a mountainboard. Good luck if you try it!
  23. Yeah I did the same thing last Novenmber, Stayed at Croyde and then went kiting at Saunton - It was all good. Such a shame that such a brilliant beach is gonna be out of bounds. What's the ruling with Croyde beach and Kites? - a bit small for water I guess, but what about the land?
  24. can't seem to access www.kentkitesurfingclub.co.uk web site- or is it just me?
  25. Well the first time I flew a kite as a 3.5m2 in 30mph winds, that was what got me hooked in the 1st place. Looking back though, was a bit crazy - just a case of being dragged along a field! So for safety's sake i'll advise he get something smaller for the high winds then and another for the UK if he gets on with it. Thanks for your help anyway
