Speaking of visiting rights... slightly off-topic to this thread I know... but a recent experience of mine struck a chord with Gray's plight at Weston.
I visited a long-standing client a few days ago. I meet with them at their serviced offices about 4-5 times a year. I parked in the visitor section of their car park as per usual. The meeting was fruitful and friendly as always. Imagine my dismay when I returned to find my car had been clamped! It seems that I should have phoned their reception in advance to notify them of my impending requirement to park there. In fairness there were signs with this info on. But, believing I had every business to park there and of course having some history of doing so, without problem, I had failed to pay sufficient attention to the signs.
If I had made this one fairly insignificant call then everything would have been OK. The sad thing for me is that the receptionist knew I was in the building, yet they didn’t ask if I was using the car park or even have a polite word that in future I should phone in advance. Instead, they just phoned the clampers!
Now the authoritarian in me says “rules are rules” and I should just accept this. However, my humanist side just can’t help feel a little aggrieved by this
I wasted a few seconds jostling with this moral dilemma. Was this someone doing their job well for the common good of car park users or merely some trumped-up little jobs worth (who was probably bullied at school) exercising their self-importance?
It didn’t take me long to decide – I concluded it was the work of a Nazi.
