Tyler Durden Posted March 17, 2008 Report Posted March 17, 2008 I am 1 week into a 12 week recovery schedule after have an Arthroscopic Bankart Repair procedure last Monday. I am in a shoulder immobilising sling for another 3 weeks (4 weeks in total), and I am due to have my stitches out on wednesday. This should be followed by 2 months of physio, which should hopefully see me fully fit again. I know their are a couple of others that have just had similar ops so I thought I would start a support thread Anyone who is currently going through this or similar, or who has it done in the past, it would be good to hear from you. Here is my surgeons handy work! http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2202/2328405679_fc460feca0_b.jpg Can you tell what's going on? It's still pretty painful, but a lot less than it was last week , saying that I have just necked the last of my Dihydrocodeine Tartrate, so I am down to paracetamol after that! Quote
flyer_gaz Posted March 17, 2008 Report Posted March 17, 2008 luckily i dont have to keep my shoulder still and have been advised to mobilise as much as possible so am out of the sling for 80% of the day and just use it for pain relief. All my morphine is now gone and am on to paracetamol .. and the pain is coming back a bit and the bruising is starting to show - but at least i can type now with 2 hands and not just my left ! Woohoo! Quote
Tyler Durden Posted March 17, 2008 Author Report Posted March 17, 2008 I suppose I should count my blessings, my right shoulder is fine. Quote
avspider Posted March 17, 2008 Report Posted March 17, 2008 When i had mine, they were going to join the bone back together, then last min changed to putting a hook in to support it, then may just take the end section out. In the end they just took the last inch out and it went into place. Lil Jonny hopewell broke his collar bone yesterday at hoy (a PKA race) - so he's out of action for a while Quote

avspider Posted March 17, 2008 Report Posted March 17, 2008 It was erm a couple of yr's ago, I have been warned to becarefull with it - so I hardly ever fly without a harness no matter how light a wind. I can go paintballing - but not clay pidgeon shooting. I was let down in a big way for support after the op - i was given no physiotherapy (sp??) at all. IF i damage it again - it'll mean major surgery (clavicle replacement) - hence i am carefull with it. If it's going to be silly winds i wear a motox armoured jacket. Apart from that i carry on as normall. Quote
Morb Posted March 17, 2008 Report Posted March 17, 2008 anyway, I hope you get well soon Tyler! Quote
Tyler Durden Posted March 17, 2008 Author Report Posted March 17, 2008 anyway, I hope you get well soon Tyler! Cheers dude. Quote
Bertie Posted March 17, 2008 Report Posted March 17, 2008 A went in for a similar op last Wednesday, first day back at school today. I was surprised just how little pain i have been in. Only pain killers have been 4 paracetamol just to help me sleep the first couple of nights last week, still didn't really need them. I'm in this sling for roughly another 2 weeks with stitches coming out next Tuesday. Despite the sloppy inbreds we know as the NHS keeping me in overnight, after reassuring me i was a day patient, surgery went well. Apparently i had a bit of bone attached to the bit of socket i had knocked off Only 4-6 months of physio and all should be good Quote
louisemarson Posted March 17, 2008 Report Posted March 17, 2008 Was this from when you dislocated your shoulder that time at Black Rock? Hope it gets better. Oh and did you know that you can run ibuprofen and paracetamol alongside each other if you offset them (i.e. take ibu, then 2 hrs later take para, then 2 hrs later take ibu) The hospital told me this lovely tip after dislocating my elbow. Quote
Tyler Durden Posted March 17, 2008 Author Report Posted March 17, 2008 Was this from when you dislocated your shoulder that time at Black Rock? Yeah, the old injury reared it's ugly head a little while ago, so I have taken steps that will hopefully get it sorted out once and for all! Quote
-Olly- Posted March 17, 2008 Report Posted March 17, 2008 get well sonn guys and hope ure back kiting pretty quickly too Quote
flyer_gaz Posted March 17, 2008 Report Posted March 17, 2008 Yeah i hope everyone who had an op recently recovers quickly and gets back out enjoying the winds really quick Quote
lee_barro1599968703 Posted March 17, 2008 Report Posted March 17, 2008 hope it heals well for u dude, then u can join us in flying nxt time at brs, istead of just on the camera Quote
piler Posted March 18, 2008 Report Posted March 18, 2008 Get fit soon chaps. I'm on the road to recovery now after having my shoulder done at the start of the year. All is fine but i still have alittle trouble putting my arm above my head, it will come though i'm giving the therabands a good working. I had physio today and was told i could go flying but nothing mad, i didn't mention that i'd managed a couple already. Quote
Zippy Posted March 18, 2008 Report Posted March 18, 2008 Its somewhat worrying to see that so many kiters have had to undergo this op Quote

Do you know what damage they found etc. Sorry if I'm being nosey, but you are the first who has had very recent experience of the healing process. Also you say you are having difficulty putting your arm over your head, is they because of restricted movement, stiffness, pain, or fear that it will pop out!? Quote
piler Posted March 18, 2008 Report Posted March 18, 2008 LONG POST ALERT>>>>>>>>>>>>> I had a bankart repair on the 27th Dec and my MRI scan showed some anterior glenoid bone loss and also a Hill-Sach's lesion caused by the joint striking the socket on dislocation (probably the same for most). When i had my initial consultation with the surgeon it was decided then that i'd have the Latarjet procedure which involves transfering the coracoid and attached tendon into the anteroinferior glenoid rim. This op has a better track record for restoring stability but when i went into hospital they informed me they were trying the bankart repair instead. What i'm concerned about is my sister used to work in Swindon hospital and she recons a good percentage of patients were re-admited after bankart repairs failed to have the Latarjet op. Time will tell i suppose. The lack of movement i have now is due to stiffness/pain and lack of trust. It has been a good 2years atleast since i've used my arm properly which has caused the muscle to deteriorate. I was told i can look forwards to arthritis in coming years so am now regularly taking cod liver oil. The recovery has been fine mostly discomfort rather than pain but i did have alittle scare a couple of weeks ago when i came unhooked from a 15m bow and it gave my arm a stretch but all is back on track now. Terry i can see this becoming more of a problem for fellow kiters espeically handle abusers although mine was initially caused be a motorbike accident some years ago. Quote
Tyler Durden Posted March 18, 2008 Author Report Posted March 18, 2008 Hmmm, interesting stuff. How did you get the injury in the first place? Quote
windy Posted March 18, 2008 Report Posted March 18, 2008 Someone say shoulder support?? http://www.welovetexas.com/products/618.jpg :D Get well soon, Tyl. Quote
piler Posted March 18, 2008 Report Posted March 18, 2008 I originally dislocated my shoulder in a bike accident some 14 years ago i also smashed my elbow to bits and through work and kiting it got worse until it would come out even when lying in bed. It's not good being stuck on your stomach with a dislocated arm and having to call to your mummy for help. I am going to purchase a shoulder support soon think they about £30 for a 661 jobby. Quote
Tyler Durden Posted March 18, 2008 Author Report Posted March 18, 2008 Sounds like yours was a bit/lot worse than mine. Good luck with the rest of your recovery, hope you get fit for the summer. Quote
piler Posted March 18, 2008 Report Posted March 18, 2008 Thanks and the same to you and the all that have had or are having the op. Quote
Bertie Posted March 18, 2008 Report Posted March 18, 2008 how many times has everyone dislocated their shoulders? i did mine 4 times. the first 3 i put back in myself, but the 4th was so bad i ended up in an ambulance before having morphine and gas and air to put it back in Quote
Bertie Posted March 18, 2008 Report Posted March 18, 2008 i just replaced the dressings on the front and back of my shoulder, they have healed up perfectly. i would be surprised if i got any scar at all from either Quote
