It's not that the pilot though about doing "a low flyby," it's standard procedure for leaving an operational base. You need to stay low so bad guys can't see you, get as fast as you can, and then yank the nose up to climb out of the range of surface to air missiles. Every departure from a fast jet in Afghanistan is like that! Quote

There's bound to be one hell of a pressure wave around a plane going at that speed - not to mention the risk of being sucked in to the intake, or if that fails he'll be blasted down the runway by the exhaust once the plane is past.
