Dukestheheat
hey, US kiter here; I read a column recently written by a woman from outside the States and she was hosting an event to honor her now-deceased husband who was obviously a terrific kiteboarder, but 'after a tremendous session, was on the beach and became unstuck; he later died of serious trauma to his head and spinal cord.' I am wondering what that term 'became/becoming unstuck' refers to; I've been fully trained in lessons (by a Flexifoil dealer here in the US, South Carolina) and I understand the safety stuff, but am wondering how I might prevent myself from becoming unstuck. thanks all for your responses, and I do thoroughly enjoy this board, dth. Dukestheheat
that term isn't a term we use here in the states and i'm trying to figure out what it is so i can prevent it from happening, thanks. dth.

Dukestheheat
like, in a pickle, so the guy is still hooked in and a rogue gust catches him, lofts him, and for some reason he doesn't pull the safety latches or something like that? dth. high pockets
Duke.... to become unstuck is just a phrase that means to get into trouble, same as to get in a pickle. I don't know any of the technical reasons that led to the tragic accident you're asking about but coming unstuck isn't one of them. Apologies for the confusion. Dukestheheat
high pockets, thanks for your reply; the kiter as an advanced kiter and was standing on the beach after 'a tremendous session' (says his widowed wife, Leah) and he 'became unstuck and soon thereafter died of head injuries and spinal cord injuries'. the story appears on ikitesurf.com. dth. doc
nice explanation. Remember the song stuck on u. Well it meant they were an item or at least one of them considered that to be the case. So unstuck is the opposite. Is not a common turn of phrase over here but in essence its self explanatory. When u've stuck something together and then it becomes unstuck it means its fallen apart.
Derek Rides
hey, but am wondering how I might prevent myself from becoming unstuck. You come unstuck at the moment you least expect it. It happens when you have just become totally confident, think you know it all. There are a lot of candidates on this forum that will eventually come unstuck. It can be from a sudden gust, a change in wind direction when you least expect it, a line snapped and a kiteloop as a result. It can be someone else blundering into you. Whatever, when it happens you have no time to react, you're already on the way to the first bounce. If you survive it conscious have rehearsed your exit routine and all the release mechanisms work you'll survive your first session unstuck. The key? Practise your get out clause before every ride.. Amazing limey black humour.. Laughing at accidents resulting in death.

Dukestheheat
derek rides- thanks for the advice on practicing the safety stuff/get out clause before going out; i'm continuing to do so and i appreciate your reminding me of that. i do fly the atom 12 meter and the 15 meter and the quick release system is great and i'm comfy with it. do you fly with a helmet? ((i don't have one and they do look a little awkward and not very comfortable)). wonder if i should just go with one anyways? you probably read the story on that kiter from australia (ikitesurf.com has it up). there are no details given at all on the accident and i guess at first i wondered what an advanced kiter like that could have forgotten when he 'came unstuck' that might have gotten him killed? surely he tried to pull the releases? the only thing i can think about is that maybe his lines got twisted into his hook on his harness and the kite looped (as you'd suggested). ? dth. Derek Rides
Helmet? Depends on the weather and if there are kooks about. 20kts + definitely, I also wear a Dakine Matrix vest and before that had another impact vest, I like the new one because its light and i can still move around. Haven't read about the Aussi guy, heard a story about the guy who hooked his safety through both the eye and one of the lines with a gate shackle that got killed when it failed to activate. I'm working here in England, most folk are cool, just a high percentage of kooks on this board, I'm sure they're not all as stupid as they sound. Best are certainly working them here and we all know how bright Best riders are :-) How do you like your atom? Its cool to find a flexi rider in this sea of Best affiliates. A guy once told me very early on, Kitesurfing is like flying, always do your pre-flight and always be aware of the weather and watch for a change in it. Solid advice. Derek Rides
You guys never heard of kook proof connectors? You should, most of your kites are fitted with them these days.. Anyhow not knowing what it means kind of confirms the reality.. Its a mild description of a fool who shouldn't really be kitesurfing. Best Introduced loads of em back home sounds like they're also working their magic over here, well certainly in the North of the country, I don't see so many in the South. Here's a question. Are English people in the North more stupid than those in the South? Or is it just a money thing?
