Farno Posted August 25, 2007 Report Posted August 25, 2007 Recomendations for my wifes first laptop. I use a Mac and have no idea about such things. It need to run powerpoint and surf the web and quote 'be fast for the internet' seen a few in this price range with 1GB RAM but different processors. Is dual core better? Quote
Afro1599968737 Posted August 25, 2007 Report Posted August 25, 2007 if you're in the habit of running more than one app. then yes it is better (most people are) Quote
Bertie Posted August 25, 2007 Report Posted August 25, 2007 just seen a toshiba from PC world in an advert. 120gb hard drive, 1gb ram and dual core processor for £399. worth a look maybe? Quote
abba Posted August 25, 2007 Report Posted August 25, 2007 As Bertie said that tosh is very reasonable for the money Tosh are reasonable to good build quality and will do everything u want easily Quote
Farno Posted August 25, 2007 Author Report Posted August 25, 2007 Yer, been lookin at that one, and i can now hook up my 360 to a windoz machine Quote
smoo Posted August 25, 2007 Report Posted August 25, 2007 Seems like everyone is selling dual core 1gb laptops. Check out Tescos, they've got a Fujitsu Seimens 478gbp dual core 2gb and x200 graphics which are supposed to be better than the Intel gma chips. Even cheaper if you've got a relative who works at Tescos:) I'm thinking of getting one, but every time I check t'internet better spec'ed laptops are available for the same money. My daughter has had a Samsung R40 for a few months, dual core vista premium 1gb, she's quite happy with it. She won't let me near it though so I can't give you a first hand review. Quote
Farno Posted August 25, 2007 Author Report Posted August 25, 2007 sounds cool, the wife is saving Tesco points for a holiday, double bubble! Quote
smoo Posted August 25, 2007 Report Posted August 25, 2007 Even better then would be the Samsung R40 thats on there now, slighter slower processor, only 1gb but better graphics x1250, but you get 999 clubcard points:D and its only 450gbp. Now I don't know whether to get one of these or the Fujistu:confused: Quote
-Olly- Posted August 26, 2007 Report Posted August 26, 2007 although the tosh seems good it is from pc world and their customer service is not known to be the best Quote
abba Posted August 26, 2007 Report Posted August 26, 2007 why do they need good customer service? surely once u buy it, and have half a clue wot ur doin it'll never be going back:cool: Quote

Harters1597507500 Posted August 26, 2007 Report Posted August 26, 2007 Just don't touch acer laptops with a barge pole! Mine has been sent of to acer soo many times. After 3 years of having it I have been through 5 hard drives. It's also slow as fu ck. Dan:cool: Quote
abba Posted August 26, 2007 Report Posted August 26, 2007 All the main IT teachers at school have huge 19inch Laptops, with full keyboards and TV nd all that fancy c**p no body would ever use. They take 15mins to boot up, and when we only have an hour lesson its almost pointless going. They then very rarely connect to the wireless network first time, and that again takes ages. Acers must be cheap or something, they seem quite popular... i want a Vaio next:cool: Quote

abba Posted August 26, 2007 Report Posted August 26, 2007 I was meant to say the laptops the teachers are using are Acer... so yeh don't even bother:rolleyes: Quote
Farno Posted August 26, 2007 Author Report Posted August 26, 2007 although the tosh seems good it is from pc world and their customer service is not known to be the best I bought a few things off PC world and the two things i've had to return, 360 and mighty mouse, they just swapped out with NO questions. I've got no problems buying from them Quote
windy Posted August 28, 2007 Report Posted August 28, 2007 I've owned an Acer laptop for around 9 months now and it ain't missed a beat. I'm well satified. It came with 3 years free cover, too. Just in case, like. Quote
kiter_ryan Posted August 28, 2007 Report Posted August 28, 2007 Buying from PC world is ok.... Just please, for christ sake, do not take out laptop insurance with them! (tech guys) They are complete willy's... Bout 4 weeks ago the bit where the charger connects to the laptop went funky, so i sent it back to pc world, as i have the 'whatever happens' cover on it... Had it sent back a week later, turned it on, on start up, laptop played a musical tune, and then completely shut down.. Ok try again, did it again and again.. Got on the phone to PC World (the tech nobs) and spent 3 hours on the phone to them, speaking to about 5 diferent guys. With there advice not doing anything they put me on to some durka durka man. Who told me that when they put the new part in, they didnt do a factory restore or something, and that i had no choice at all, but to wipe the computer clean... (luckily i had emailed myself most of my school work before the laptop first went in) But anyways did this, lost all my music, software, everything... Turned my laptop back on, AND THAT FECKING MUSICAL NOISE CAME UP AGAIN! laptop shut down... Now PC world came and taken my laptop back instore, ive been waiting coming up 3 weeks now... Called them up 3 times and have been told its at the engineer's... Not sure if its because im a kid, and they thought they could just send me on a wild goose chase, but im not very happy, its utter bollucts, think my step dad is going to help me out now, and try get something sorted.. Anyways, on the subject of new laptops, they are really very good now, i spent £400 on my budget laptop last year, and looking at the laptops available now, you can get a laptop double the spec, like double the harddrive and the memory of mine (and ive fitted more ram) for the same price!!! Thinking of buying a macbook, sod all this Advent ****.... Quote
